FRESH LOVE

TEXT: 1 JOHN 4:19

VERSE OF THE DAY:
_“WE LOVE HIM BECAUSE HE FIRST LOVED US” - 1 JOHN 4:19 (NKJV)._

The concept of "Fresh Love" is essential in our relationship with God and others. This lesson delves into the depth and renewal of love that should characterise our walk with Christ and our interactions with the world.

In 1 John 4:19, we are reminded that our ability to love stems from God's initial love for us. This foundational truth encourages us to reflect on the source of our love, emphasising that it is not merely an obligation but a response to God's overwhelming grace. Understanding and experiencing God's love helps us cultivate a fresh perspective in our relationships.

Romans 5:5 affirms this idea: “Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” This verse illustrates how the Holy Spirit empowers us to experience God's love profoundly, leading us to express that love in renewed and vibrant forms. A fresh love is marked by joy, gratitude, and an eagerness to share this love with others.

In John 13:34-35, Jesus gives us a new commandment: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” This command emphasises that our love should reflect the nature of Christ's love—sacrificial, unconditional, and transformative. Fresh love is evident when we actively demonstrate love, not only in words but through our actions.

Ephesians 4:32 also encourages us to extend our love: “And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” Fresh love is characterised by kindness and forgiveness. Regularly evaluating our heart attitudes towards others can revitalise our relationships and embody Christ-like love.

Furthermore, Colossians 3:14 reminds us, “But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.” Putting on fresh love requires intentional effort and commitment. It is through choosing to love actively, particularly during challenging times, that we can foster stronger relationships and communities of faith.

Lastly, 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 provides us with a descriptive blueprint of love: “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” Reflecting on this passage helps us assess if our love is fresh, vibrant, and reflective of Christ’s character.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, help us to experience Your love anew so that we can love others genuinely and wholeheartedly, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

CULTIVATE YOUR FAITH

TEXT: 2 PETER 1:5-7

_“BUT ALSO FOR THIS VERY REASON, GIVING ALL DILIGENCE, ADD TO YOUR FAITH VIRTUE, TO VIRTUE KNOWLEDGE, TO KNOWLEDGE SELF-CONTROL, TO SELF-CONTROL PERSEVERANCE, TO PERSEVERANCE GODLINESS, TO GODLINESS BROTHERLY KINDNESS, AND TO BROTHERLY KINDNESS LOVE.” - 2 PETER 1:5-7 (NKJV)._

The idea of cultivating faith is foundational in the Christian journey and essential for spiritual growth. This lesson delves into the steps that believers are encouraged to take in nurturing and enhancing their faith, emphasising the importance of diligence and intentionality.

In 2 Peter 1:5-7, the Apostle Peter outlines a progressive pathway for believers to develop their faith through specific attributes. This "ladder of faith" illustrates how each virtue builds upon the other, guiding us toward maturity in our relationship with Christ.

What are the steps we need to take to cultivate our faith?

1. Add to Your Faith Virtue: The foundation of our spiritual journey begins with faith in Jesus Christ. Adding virtue denotes moral excellence and integrity in our actions and thoughts. It reflects a commitment to live according to God’s standards. Philippians 4:8 encourages us to think on things that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, and of good report—leading us to live virtuous lives that honour God.

2. To Virtue Knowledge: Knowledge is vital in growing our faith. It is through understanding God’s Word that we deepen our relationship with Him. Colossians 3:16 emphasises the importance of letting the word of Christ dwell in us richly. As we gain knowledge, we become more equipped to discern God’s will and navigate life’s challenges with wisdom.

3. To Knowledge Self-Control: Self-control is the ability to govern our desires and impulses. It is essential for spiritual growth, allowing us to resist temptation and make choices that honour God. Galatians 5:22-23 describes self-control as a fruit of the Spirit, highlighting its role in living a life aligned with God's desires.

4. To Self-Control Perseverance: Perseverance is the steadfastness to continue in faith, even amidst trials and tribulations. Romans 5:3-4 teaches us that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance produces character, and character produces hope. This quality is crucial as it strengthens our faith and reliance on God’s promises.

5. To Perseverance Godliness: Godliness is a reflection of our relationship with God and signifies a lifestyle that is reverent and devoted to Him. 1 Timothy 4:7-8 encourages us to exercise ourselves toward godliness, as it holds promise for both this life and the next.

6. To Godliness Brotherly Kindness: Brotherly kindness signifies the love and affection we are to show to fellow believers. John 13:34-35 commands us to love one another, and in doing so, we demonstrate our discipleship and connection to Christ.

7. To Brotherly Kindness Love: Finally, love is the greatest of these virtues, as we are commanded to love God and love our neighbours (Matthew 22:37-39). Love binds all these attributes together in perfect unity, creating a vibrant and fruitful faith.

WHAT GOD DESIRES

_“HE HAS SHOWN YOU, O MAN, WHAT IS GOOD; AND WHAT DOES THE LORD REQUIRE OF YOU BUT TO DO JUSTLY, TO LOVE MERCY, AND TO WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD?” - MICAH 6:8 (NKJV)._

The theme of what God desires is central to understanding our relationship with Him and our purpose on earth. This lesson explores the attributes God seeks in His followers, emphasising justice, mercy, and humility.

In Micah 6:8, the prophet Micah outlines the core requirements that God has revealed to humanity. These three principles—doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly—serve as a foundation for a life that is pleasing to God. Each attribute carries profound significance in our daily interactions and spiritual growth.

The following are what God desires from us:

1. Do Justly: The call to do justly refers to living a life marked by righteousness and fairness. It signifies treating others with respect and integrity, advocating for justice and truth in all circumstances. Isaiah 1:17 also echoes this sentiment, urging us to “Learn to do good; seek justice, rebuke the oppressor; defend the fatherless, plead for the widow." God desires His people to be agents of justice in an often-unjust world, reflecting His character through actions.

2. Love Mercy: To love mercy means to embody compassion and kindness towards others. In Matthew 5:7, Jesus states, "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy." This principle challenges us to extend grace and forgiveness, recognising our own need for God’s mercy. Through the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), we see a vivid example of loving mercy in action, illustrating how God desires us to care for those in need, regardless of societal boundaries.

3. Walk Humbly with Your God: Walking humbly involves recognising our dependence on God and submitting to His will. James 4:10 reminds us, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you.” Humility cultivates a genuine relationship with God, where we acknowledge His sovereignty and our need for His guidance. Proverbs 22:4 teaches us that “By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honour and life,” highlighting the blessings that come from a humble heart.

God desires these virtues in our lives to foster a fellowship that reflects His love, justice, and righteousness. In Colossians 3:12-14, Paul encourages us to put on these virtues, stating, “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another.” Our actions should flow from our identity as God’s chosen people.

BE WARY OF COMPLACENCY

TEXT: REVELATION 3:15-16

_“I KNOW YOUR WORKS, THAT YOU ARE NEITHER COLD NOR HOT. I COULD WISH YOU WERE COLD OR HOT. SO THEN, BECAUSE YOU ARE LUKEWARM, AND NEITHER COLD NOR HOT, I WILL VOMIT YOU OUT OF MY MOUTH” - REVELATION 3:15-16 (NKJV)._

The theme of complacency is a crucial reminder in our walk with God. This lesson explores the dangers of spiritual complacency and encourages us to remain fervent in our faith.

In Revelation 3:15-16, Jesus addresses the Church of Laodicea, cautioning them against their lukewarm state. Complacency can lead to a sense of self-satisfaction that often disconnects us from the vibrant relationship God desires for us. Spiritual warmth and enthusiasm are essential; being indifferent can result in spiritual barrenness.

Proverbs 1:32 states, “For the turning away of the simple will slay them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them.” This verse warns that complacency can have dire consequences. When we become comfortable in our spiritual lives, we may neglect our growth, leading to stagnation and potential downfall. It is imperative to remain vigilant and proactive in our relationship with God.

2 Peter 1:10 encourages us, saying, “Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things, you will never stumble.” This passage emphasises the importance of diligence in our faith. To avoid complacency, we must actively pursue spiritual growth, constantly seeking ways to deepen our understanding and commitment to God.

Hebrews 2:1 further highlights the importance of vigilance: “Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.” Complacency can lead to drifting away from God’s truth and promises. Continually engaging with Scripture, prayer, and community is crucial to maintaining a steadfast faith.

In Matthew 25:26, the parable of the talents illustrates the danger of complacency as well. The servant who buried his talent rather than investing it was rebuked for his laziness. God calls us to be active stewards of the gifts and abilities He has given. Complacency can prevent us from fulfilling our God-given purpose and mission in life.

Lastly, Philippians 3:14 encourages us to “press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” This pursuit requires diligence and a refusal to settle for mediocrity. By striving to grow in our faith and serve others, we actively combat complacency.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, help us to be vigilant against complacency and to pursue You wholeheartedly, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

THE PATH OF OBEDIENCE

The theme of obedience is foundational in our relationship with God. This lesson examines the significance of following God’s commandments and how obedience impacts our spiritual journey and well-being.

In Deuteronomy 5:33, Moses instructs the Israelites to walk in God’s ways, emphasising that obedience leads to life and blessings. This call to obedience is not merely a set of rules to follow, but it is an invitation to experience the fullness of life that God desires for us. By walking in His ways, we align ourselves with His plan, ensuring that our lives are rich with purpose and fulfilment.

1 Samuel 15:22 reminds us of the value God places on obedience over sacrifice: “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord?” This verse stresses that true devotion to God is expressed through our willingness to follow His commands, rather than merely performing acts of worship without sincerity.

Psalm 119:1-2 provides insight into the blessings of obedience: “Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord! Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, who seek Him with the whole heart!” Here, the psalmist highlights how a heart committed to seeking God and following His Word leads to a blessed life. Obeying God’s laws brings joy, peace, and alignment with His will.

In John 14:15, Jesus states, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” Obedience is rooted in love for Christ. When we love Him, our desire will be to follow His teachings and examples. This relationship fosters an environment where faith can thrive, and we are empowered to live out His commands.

Romans 6:16 provides a clear understanding of the consequences of obedience: “Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?” This passage makes it clear that our choices either lead us closer to God or draw us away from Him. Choosing the path of obedience opens the door to righteousness and life.

Lastly, Hebrews 5:9 teaches that “He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him.” Our obedience to Christ not only leads us to a deeper relationship with Him, but also brings the promise of eternal life. Obedience is, therefore, a significant aspect of our faith journey, impacting both our present and eternity.
