Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, as we come before You tonight, we place ourselves, our families, our burdens, our worries, our hopes, and everything that concerns us into Your loving Heart___Amen

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, we adore You, we love You, and we trust in You. Thank You for carrying us through this day and for the gift of life, protection, mercy, and countless blessings. As we prepare to rest tonight, prepare our hearts to receive Your peace and consolation___Amen

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, be our refuge when we are troubled, our strength when we are weak, our hope when we are discouraged, and our consolation when our hearts are wounded. Heal every pain, disappointment, fear, anxiety, and sorrow hidden within us. Remove from our hearts whatever prevents us from experiencing Your divine peace___Amen

*What is right?*

There is an organ in my home. As I look at the notes on that organ, I could ask, which note is good and which note is bad? Which note is right and which note is wrong? One cannot say that any particular note is right or any particular note is wrong. What makes any note right or wrong? Its correspondence to a standard. Once I have a piece of music before me, I know what I ought to do, what note I should hit, what note I ought not to hit. So too, we have a moral standard within us which is our conscience. What is good and bad is in relationship to that standard which is not of our own making. We do not draw our own maps, and decide what the distance from Chicago to New York will be, for instance. We do not arbitrarily set our own watches. We set them by a standard outside of us. When we buy material, for example, we do not decide that a yard will be twenty-four inches instead of thirty-six inches. A good, therefore, is that which helps us in relationship to the attainment of purposes and goals and destinies which are in accordance with right reason.

Goodness

What makes a thing good? A thing is good when it attains the purpose for which it was made. I have before me now a watch. Is it a good watch? How will I know whether it is good? By asking what the purpose of a watch is. The purpose of a watch is to keep time. Does it keep time? Yes. Therefore, it is a good watch. Now let us apply that to our ultimate end. Why were we made? What is the purpose of living? The purpose of living is to be supremely happy. How do we become supremely happy? By attaining the life and truth and love which is God.

Grace and the will

When grace comes into the will, it gives us new power, new strength that we never had before. It gives us a new ability to resist temptation. Too often in this world as soon as anyone becomes a slave of sin, we speak of him as having a compulsion. We say, "Oh, he is a compulsive drinker. He is a compulsive eater." Now that is true, The word that our Lord used to explain that compulsion was slavery. But this does not mean that these people have completely destroyed their freedom. Believe me, there is always a little area of freedom left in an alcoholic or in anyone who is given over to the slavery of sin. Sins which started with free acts of our own weaken our will, but they do not completely destroy it. It is possible for grace to establish a beachhead. Grace has its D-Day, and God can get in to anyone. After all, when we are trying to cure people of vices, we can never drive out a vice. We can only crowd it out. How do you crowd it out? You crowd it out by putting in something else. The grace of God comes in. When we begin to love him, then these vices begin to be pushed out. Once a new love comes in, we are changed.
