Joseph and His Brothers
A long time ago, in the land of Canaan, there was a young boy named Joseph, the son of Jacob. Joseph had eleven brothers, but his father loved him the most and gave him a beautiful coat of many colors. This made his brothers very jealous.
One night, Joseph had a dream. He told his brothers, "I dreamed that we were binding sheaves of grain in the field, and your sheaves bowed down to mine." Another time, he dreamed that the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed before him. His brothers became even angrier, believing Joseph thought he would rule over them.
One day, when Joseph went to check on his brothers in the fields, they saw him coming and plotted against him. "Here comes the dreamer!" they said. They threw him into a pit and later sold him as a slave to travelers going to Egypt. They told their father, Jacob, that Joseph had been killed by a wild animal.
In Egypt, Joseph was sold to Potiphar, a high-ranking official. Because of Joseph’s honesty and wisdom, he was put in charge of Potiphar’s house. But when Potiphar’s wife falsely accused him of wrongdoing, Joseph was thrown into prison.
Even in prison, Joseph remained faithful to God. He interpreted the dreams of fellow prisoners, and later, Pharaoh himself had troubling dreams. Joseph was called to interpret them, explaining that Egypt would face seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine. Impressed, Pharaoh made Joseph second-in-command of Egypt, in charge of preparing for the famine.
Years later, when the famine spread to Canaan, Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt seeking food. They did not recognize Joseph, but he recognized them. Instead of seeking revenge, Joseph tested their hearts and saw that they had changed. Finally, he revealed himself, saying, "Do not be afraid. What you meant for evil, God used for good." He forgave them and invited his family to live in Egypt, where they would have plenty.
Moral Lesson:
Forgiveness is powerful. Even when Joseph had the power to punish his brothers, he chose love and mercy instead.
Patience and faith bring rewards. Joseph suffered unfairly, but he never lost faith, and in the end, his trials led to his greatest blessings.
Jealousy leads to harm. The brothers' jealousy caused years of pain, but in the end, love and humility healed their family.
