In Anglican churches, a Verger is a lay officer who assists the clergy in worship and maintains order in the church building. In Diocese on the Niger this is usually a licensed lay reader or senior lay person appointed by the parish priest/Vicar with the Bishopโs approval.
Key duties include:
- During services: Leads the procession, carries the Vergerโs staff/mace, ushers clergy, choir and readers, sets out the Bible, directs seating, ensures reverence, and manages the flow of Holy Communion.
- Church care: Prepares the church for services lighting candles, arranging altar, vestments, checking sound, seating, and locking up after.
- Ceremonial: Wears a black gown, sometimes with tippet, and uses a staff. For major Diocesan events like Synod, normal every Sunday Worship or Episcopal visitations.
