*Background*
---------------------------------------
All at once, the world came crashing down on an innocent man, a man named Job.
First, raiders stole his belongings and slaughtered his servants. Then fire from the sky burned up his sheep; and a mighty wind destroyed his house and killed his son's and daughters. Finally, Job was struck with a horrible, painful disease. In all these, Job was steadfast refused to curse God as suggested by his wife, but he did curse the day he was born, asked for a quick death, realizing he could not hold out trusting in God forever. If he died soon, at least he would die still believing. Job recognized the enormous gulf between God and people. He poignantly asked for an arbitrator "to lay his hand upon us both" A fee such comments of Job, expressing great longing for advocate, found their full realization in Jesus; who was called the mediator *"one mediator between God and men" ( 1Timothy 2:5)*
Even though Job could not understand God at the moment, he never belittled the blessings he had already received. In a fit of anger, a divorce might say, "Oh, I never really loved him anyway," Job never once turned his back on God in that way.
*Job 19:25* expresses an outburst of hope. In the midst of his deepest agony, Job expressed astonishing words of hope. This prophecy led to two other flashes of hope. *(Job 9:33; 16:19-21)*. Job did not hide his despair and anguish, but, as this verse shows, the trials never crushed all his hope.
*Job 31:16* gives insights into Job's life of spiritual discipline. He had developed that habit of obeying God. Now, with all the prop knocked out, he still turned to God for strength, even though God seemed utterly absent. It was as if he had a resource bank of trust in God: the trust he had accumulated in more comfortable times helped him survive his hardship. A personal visit from God utterly silenced all Job's questions about unfairness. Also God condemned Job's friends. Once he saw God, he had nothing to say. *(Job 42:5)*
The Lord made Job prosperous again and gave him twice as much as he had before. All his brothers and sisters and everyone who had know him before came and ate with him in his house. The Lord blessed the later part of Job's life more than the first *(see Job 42:12-13)*
