Topic: Desire for recognition

Bible Verse:
2 Samuel 1:1–16

Meditation Question
Q.2 – Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
Q.5 – Is there any warning for me to heed?

Introduction to 2 SAMUEL
In 2nd Samuel, there is a vivid account of David’s reign as king. In a bid to extend his kingdom and consolidate his position, he had to fight many battles both within the nation and with foreign powers. It opens with David’s kingship over Judah, immediately after Saul’s death, and closes just before David’s death, when he is “old and stricken in years”. The book, therefore, covers a period of about forty years which was the duration of David’s reign. Chapter 5:4–5 says: “David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.” We can therefore always remember 2nd Samuel as the book of David’s forty-year reign.

Scripture Union Daily Guide 25th May 2026 Outline
We get here a second account of how Saul died after the one in 1 Samuel 31. David had not heard the report as told in chapter 31. It would seem like the young man was on Mount Gilboa when Saul died. He saw his chance to get a reward from David. Probably knowing that Saul had spent several years pursuing David with the intention of killing him, he resorted to telling lies thinking the news would please David.

But notice how David reacted to the news (vs.11–12). Despite Saul’s multiple attempts in the past to kill David, still David was not happy to hear of his death. What a Christlike man! How do you react to news, especially of a misfortune befalling a rival or a perceived enemy?

Notice the reward the Amalekite got for his lies (vs.14–16)? We live in days when fake news is flying around freely, especially on social media. We must be careful what news we spread, e.g., what WhatsApp message we forward and our motive for doing so lest we find ourselves in the trouble for which we never bargained.

So what?
Live a life of truth and obedience to God’s word.

Prayer: Lord, grant me a Christlike heart, so that I will take no pleasure in the downfall of my enemies, but rather pray for them.

Topic: The outpouring of the Holy Spirit

Opening Prayer
Help me dear Lord to meet with you as I meditate on your word in Jesus name

Bible verse:
Acts 2:1–13

Meditation Question
Q.7 – What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 24th May 2026 Outline
Pentecost was a special festival to thank God for new harvest known sometimes as the festival of weeks. This was celebrated 50 days after the Passover. Jews all over the world were encouraged to attend this festival which is the reason we had so many nationalities (v.5), of which 16 are mentioned by name including Africans (v.10). God’s timing was perfect. People from all over the world heard poor Galileans speak their native languages!

This was mind blowing and a miracle of huge proportions especially that the tongues were followed by tongues of fire landing on these people without being consumed! We see the cleansing effect of the Holy Spirit as fire in the life of the prophet Isaiah (6:6,7). Also, the wind signifies the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

Now read vs. 1–4 again and notice the importance of unity among the disciples as they awaited the promise (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4–5). Praying in one accord is efficacious (Matthew 18:19 cf. Acts 4:24,31). Note also that the Holy Spirit filled and enabled all the disciples without exception (vs.4–8). The Holy Spirit is for all believers including you (Acts 2:39).

So what?
As we celebrate Pentecost today, use this occasion to renew your relationship with the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on me, break me, mould me, fill me, and use me…

Topic: Did Philemon have a choice?

Opening Prayer

Bible Verse:
Philemon 15-25

Meditation Question
Q.2 – Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
Q.7 – What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 23rd May 2026 Outline
Observe the following set of relationships: Paul and Philemon, Paul and Onesimus, Philemon and Onesimus. What ties them together? Yes, it is the brotherhood in Jesus Christ (v.16). Yet, Philemon appears to have had difficulty accepting Onesimus in this new relationship.

Notice the nature of personal appeal that Paul makes to Philemon (vs.16-17). Given this relationship between Paul and Philemon, Philemon is not only called upon to forgive, but also to let go of anything Onesimus owes him (vs.18-19).

When we are wronged by others in the church or community, do we have any choice but to forgive (Colossians 3:13)? In real life as believers, we are faced with situations like that faced by Philemon. It is not how many times someone has wronged us or how serious the issue is, we must forgive. Forgiveness is painful, that is why the Lord Jesus was hanged on our behalf. God made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21). We live in obedience to our God.

And so? Why would Paul offer himself as surety for Onesimus? Would your pastor or Christian friends vouch for you that much?

Prayer: Reflect on the fact that we pray, ‘Forgive our trespasses as we forgive them that trespass against us’ (Matthew 6:12) and ask God for grace to always forgive.

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK:
Pray for all those who are afflicted of the devil, spiritually, mentally, physically that God’s power will go forth to heal and deliver them.

Topic: A test on forgiveness

Opening Prayer
Help me dear Lord to meet with you as I meditate on your word in Jesus name

Bible Verse:
Philemon 1-14

Meditation Question
►Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Introduction to PHILEMON
Archipus was their son. This was a private letter written by Paul to Philemon, who had become a Christian during Paul’s time of ministry in Ephesus. Some scholars argue that Apphia was probably Philemon’s wife and since Paul seems to address the letter to them as well (vs.1-2), Paul was in this letter pleading with Philemon (and his family, perhaps) to forgive and restore their runaway slave, Onesimus, who came under the influence of Paul in Rome and was converted.

The name Onesimus means “useful.” Although what he had done almost portrayed him as being useless to his master, but in Christ, Paul was sure that Onesimus has become useful indeed. As we study this letter, may we trust the Lord to add value to the lives of the people around us, who ordinarily may appear to have very little moral values in society! May they encounter Christ through us.

Scripture Union Daily Guide 22nd May 2026 Outline
Philemon was a Greek landowner in Colosse, a church leader and a friend to Paul. Philemon had a runaway slave called Onesimus who later became a believer in Rome through Paul who was in prison and began to attend to Paul. Paul was writing a very personal letter to Philemon, but he includes Apphia and Archippus who were in Philemon’s house, probably to help persuade Philemon to accept Paul’s request. Paul praises Philemon for his faith in Jesus Christ and his love to fellow believers who belonged to the church in his house and other itinerant believers. He encouraged him to do more v.6. Do people in your community and church see and hear your acts of love and faith in God? James condemns faith without works of love in our communities (1:22, 26).

Riding on the goodness of Philemon, Paul makes his request that Philemon may forgive Onesimus who had run away from him. Runaway slaves could be summarily executed when found and who knows Onesimus could have stolen some things from his master. Painful decision for Philemon, a real test of forgiveness. If you were Philemon, what would you have done? Forgiveness for us is unconditional (Matthew18:21-22). What a test on forgiveness!

Prayer: Lord, help me to develop in me a forgiving heart.

2 Thessalonians 3:6-18

Meditation Question
►Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 21st May 2026 Outline
The misinformation and confusion caused by false teachers in Thessalonica caused some believers to think that there was no need to work since Jesus was coming anytime. Paul was very strong in warning such people to a point developing a theme for people to be guided by, ‘No work, no food’ (v.10). Paul was not directing people to do what he does not do.

Notice how he and his fellow ministers live among Christians according to vs.7-10. They did this so they would not be a burden to the new converts, thus setting an example for all believers to follow especially, leaders. Laziness often turns people into busybodies. They talk too much and often become gossips and slanderers which would create divisions in the church. When you are busy, you have no time for unhealthy talk.

Laziness is an invitation to poverty (Proverbs 6:9-11; 20:4). Out of the sweat, we find our food and clothing otherwise we become beggars (Genesis 3:19). When you are lazy you live in sin and its destructive characteristics surround you.

Hatred, envy, covetousness, theft and murder are products of laziness. Employment may be an issue in your country but pray and look out for something you can do with your hands to earn your living and cause the name of God to be praised in your life.

Prayer: Pray for the young people and the unemployment situation in your country.

2 Thessalonians 2:13-17;
2 Thessalonians 3:1-5

Meditation Question
►Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 20th May 2026 -Outline
Believers need to express their thankfulness to God for giving them salvation by standing firm to show acceptance of this wonderful gift. Paul shows the Thessalonians that they found salvation through the proclamation of the word to them (2 Thessalonians 2:14) so they needed to stand firm guided by the word of God and worshipping God as instructed by Paul and his companions. Obedience to the word of God and practising it in our lives would help us to stand firm and serve God with a clear conscience having the confidence that we would inherit eternal life as Paul observed (2 Timothy 4:7,8).

Note how Paul addressed his Thessalonian converts:
(a) Brothers (2 Thessalonians 1:3, 2 Thessalonians 2:13, 2 Thessalonians 3:1),
(b) Chosen to be saved (2 Thessalonians 2:13),
(c) Called, to share in Christ’s glory (2 Thessalonians 2:14).

Can these describe you? In recognition of God’s role in keeping them, Paul prayed for them. Note the things he prayed about on their behalf (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17; 2 Thessalonians 3:5). The spread and impact of the gospel is one of the means to stem the tide of ungodliness and promote Christian stability. Unfortunately, some people whom Paul described as wicked, evil, and faithless, work against the gospel.

Closing Prayer

►Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
►Q8: Is there any other Biblical passage that can help me understand this passage better?

Scripture union daily Outline for 19th May 2027

In this chapter, Paul sets out to reassure the Thessalonians who had received false reports, letters and prophecies said to have originated from Paul and his companions. These letters and teachings were saying the second coming of Jesus had already taken place thereby unsettling many believers and confusing many (2 Thessalonians 2:2). Paul reassures them that the second coming of Jesus has an unmistakable sequence that should help them discern whether the time had truly come.

Notice two events that must precede Christ’s second coming in 2 Thessalonians 2:3. ‘The man of lawlessness’ falls into the category of those John refers to as antichrists (1 John 2:18). He
will be fighting the work of God in society and the temple, deceiving people through miraculous signs, wonders and lies (2 Thessalonians 2:9,10; 2 Corinthians 11:13-15). He will through this mislead many, leading them to believe these lies and lose their place in the kingdom of God.
How do you differentiate the works of the devil and the works of God through His people? Paul encourages the Thessalonians and us as well to stand firm in the truth of the word of God which he taught them when he was with them. This steadfastness will bring growth and maturity to all serious believers, ‘so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ’.

Opening Prayer
Dear Lord, I request that you help me to encounter you as I meditate on your word.

Bible Text
2 Thessalonians 1:1-12

Introduction to 2 Thessalonians
Paul, Silas and Timothy visited Thessalonica on Paul’s second missionary journey (Acts 17:1-14). Because of the hostility of the Jews, they stayed for only three weeks. A strong church grew in the city. Paul sent Timothy to see to their welfare and encourage them. In his letters to the church, the Apostle is responding to the information he received from Timothy. On the one hand, Timothy had brought good news of their “faith and love”, their loyalty and steadfastness under persecution. On the other hand, they needed some instruction in godly living, and some correction of their wrong views about the second coming of Jesus. He addressed the latter in his first letter, but the issue still persisted, and that is the main purpose of this second letter.

Meditation Question
►Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
►Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 18th May 2026 – Outline
Although Paul is the one teaching the Thessalonians here, he informs them that the letter was written by him and two co-workers, Silas and Timothy. Paul had reasons to thank God about the Thessalonians. See 2 Thessalonians 1:3-4 for his reasons. Notice that these are not all positive. Although they faced serious persecution, they did not abandon their newfound faith. They thus became a source of encouragement for other believers who would otherwise compromise or abandon their faith.

If you have experienced fights, slandering or persecutions in your congregation what was your reaction? Did you leave the church or start your own church? What would Paul say about your decision? Paul advises the Thessalonians that judgement was surely coming and urged them to continue steadfastly in the faith knowing that God would punish those who were persecuting them. Vengeance is mine says the Lord (Deuteronomy 32:35 and Romans 12:19-21). Suffering is part of Christian life (2 Timothy 3:12). Check James’ advice in James 1:2-4. Paul concludes with prayer. Notice what he prayed about (2 Thessalonians 1:11), and why (2 Thessalonians 1:12)?

Bible Text
Psalms 117:1-2

Meditation Question
►Q1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
►Q3: Is there any command for me to obey?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 17th May 2026 Outline
This is the shortest psalm and chapter in the whole Bible. Despite its shortness, it contains a profound message of a universal call to worship God. In Psalms 117:1, the Psalmist calls for all nations, even the Gentile, to praise the Lord and all peoples to extol Him (Psalms 117:1). This shows that our God is the Lord of all the earth and the King over all nations, races, tribes and people. He is the Creator and those who refuse to praise Him are being rebellious (Psalms 2:1-6). What two reasons do the Psalmists give why every nation and people should praise God (Psalms 117:2)?

God’s great love and enduring faithfulness are universal and eternal. He loves all the people of the earth, even when they have not acknowledged Him as their God. His plan of salvation is for everyone in every nation (John 3:16). God is faithful in providing for all His creatures. The attitude of the people does not affect His love for them (Matthew 5:43-45). How should knowing that God’s love extends to all people shape our view of worship and evangelism?

What Next?
In what ways can you live as a witness to God’s universal love? Consider how you can encourage those around you, regardless of their background to embrace the love of God.

Psalms 116:1-19

Meditation Question
►Q1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
►Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
►Q4: Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 16th May 2026 Outline
This Psalm is a heartfelt expression of gratitude for God’s deliverance. The psalmist states his reasons for the heartfelt worship in Psalms 116:1-2. He called and God responded in mercy. Has God answered your prayers? Has that deepened your love for Him? Read Psalms 116:3-11 again. Here, the psalmist recounts his desperate situation, and how God rescued him.

In many parts of Africa, we face a lot of life-threatening situations comparable to or even worse than that of the Psalmist. These verses remind us that our God is compassionate and gracious, always ready to save us, so we should not be tired of calling on Him. In response to the mercy and faithfulness of God, the psalmist vows to walk before the Lord in faith and thanksgiving. He acknowledges that his life belongs to God and offers a sacrifice of praise (Psalms 116:12-14,17-19).

Think of some practical and appropriate ways to show gratitude and offer “sacrifices of thanksgiving” to the Lord for His goodness. What can we learn from Psalms 116:15, especially when God calls home our loved ones whom we know are His faithful servants?

Closing Prayer
Thank you, dear Lord, for being gracious to me, always delivering me from my troubles. Help to always reciprocate your love with a grateful heart of worship and thanksgiving.

Meditation Question
►Q1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
►Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
►Q5: Is there any warning for me to heed?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 15th May 2026 Outline
In this Psalm, the Psalmist contrasts the living God with lifeless idols, calling on Israel to trust in God alone. Why should we give all glory to God (Psalms 115:1)? We are often tempted to attribute our achievements to our efforts or fellow men, but Psalms 115:1 reminds us that all the glory should be given to God because of His love and faithfulness to us. When Israel experienced calamity, the nations mocked Israel, asking “Where is their God?” (Psalms 115:2). How does it feel, when we face such mockery today?

Read Psalms 115:3-8 again and observe the Psalmist’s response to the mockery of the enemies. What can we learn from this response? Whatever the situation we are going through, we should know that our God is in control and actively accomplishing his purposes, even when the enemies mock us because of our situation (Psalms 115:3). Trusting in man-made idols ends in futility and shame. Our modern “idols” such as wealth, power, or status, are not different. They can give temporary satisfaction but cannot save. But if we trust solely in the living God (Psalms 115:9-11), our blessings are guaranteed (Psalms 115:12-13).

And So
God alone deserves your worship and trust. Reject anything that seeks to take His rightful place in your heart.
