*Today, 10th May, 2025 we remember the death of the Founder of the Boys' Brigade, Sir William Alexander Smith.*

*Sir William Alexander Smith was born in Pennyland House, Thurso, Scotland on 27 October 1854. He was the eldest Son of Major David and Harriet Smith.*

*As a Boy, William Smith was educated at Miller Institution, known as the 'Thurso Academy'. That is why there is a room at the Boys' Brigade Headquarters called the 'Thurso Centre'.*

*William Smith later joined the 1st Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers and at the age of 19, he was promoted to the rank of a lance corporal and was commissioned a Lieutenant in 1877. He also joined the Church of Scotland that same year and later became a Sunday School Teacher.*

*It was a combination of those two activities that led him to start the Boys' Brigade on 4th October 1883 at Free Church Mission Hall, North Woodside Road, Glasgow, with the two pillars namely 'Religion and Discipline' with the aim to develop Christian manliness through Semi-military discipline and order, gymnastics and religious activities.*

*Gracefully in 1909 Sir William was knighted by King Edward VII for his services to young people.*

*On Friday 8th May 1914 at the Boys' Brigade Executive Meeting at Albert Hall, Sir William Alexander Smith suddenly collapse and was rushed to the hospital. However on 10th May 1914 at the London Hospital, Sir William Alexander Smith finally died at the age of 60 and was buried in Glasgow. There is a memorial stone in his honor at St. Paul's Cathedral, London and at St. Giles Cathedral, Edinburg.*

*May His Soul Continue to rest in peace.*
