TOPIC: MEANINGLESS LIVING
TEXT: ECCLESIASTES 1:1-8; MATTHEW 4:1-11

INTRODUCTION: In continuation from the last episode we left a lot of things undiscussed. There is no doubt that some pastors are truly called of God but are so careless that they lost their schedule and unconsciously engage in worldly affairs. They have forgotten their appointment with God and are so full of self. If you are one, break the yoke from your neck otherwise you are heading nowhere. Deal with ego and humble yourself so as to learn to avoid errors. Leaders need to progress toward maturity and lead their flock into green pastures as their principal task and not to mislead as Aaron fell victim.

As such Satan can through a religious leader like Aaron associate idolatry with Christ, reorganizing the good in all religious practice and providing a worship that appeals to man’s natural heart. Note that everything was done by Aaron under the cover of religion, why? The people had no faith. They had forgotten the Passover deliverance. In response, God was angry with them.

We may sit back and conclude in our mind “how could the Israelites do something far removed from our own experience. We are however not likely to pay homage to a statue; we all face the problem of idolatry. Any person, possession or activity that become greater priority for us than our relationship with the Lord serve as an idol. People have interest in social activities like holiday, watching football, travelling and touring, playing golf etc. It is not as if they are bad, but only if they do not allow then to become their gods.
How then could things that look good be considered idol? Let’s consider the following examples:

1. I know of some people who were in love with football, when Nigerian team for example are playing any other country and happened to fall on Sunday, same time with worship hour, these ones who claimed to be Christians usually stay back to watch Nigeria match rather than being in God’s presence. It is unfortunate that they spend no time in prayer, you don’t see them in study of the scripture (Bible Study) and seldom attend corporate worship service. His relationship with the Lord is not the center of his life. Overtime in history, we have witnessed or heard of spectators who lost their lives while watching their favorite sports like football and other sports. Some of these people died without Christ. Where do you think they will end, and what do you think they will present before their maker? Earthly pleasures will pass away but we can make amends while on earth before it is too late. Make God and his Kingdom first before pleasures, Matthew 6:33.

2. Too much concentration on material acquired like cars, houses, clothes, etc which take much attention and focus with no time for God’s presence and programs except focusing on these material possessions which are perishable than time with God. People like this should not be surprised if someone referred to them as idolaters as that term accurately describes them. This challenges all to worship nothing or love things more than the living God.

3. Distraction a Trap. It is a thing of note that no one can find the deepest fulfilment and satisfaction in life apart from a faith relationship with Jesus Christ. God Almighty had for long proclaimed repentance and faith in order to experience the highest joys and deepest satisfaction available through a life devoted to Him. Life ultimate meaning is not found in high class people you come in contact with or the luxury you were expose to. Life is futility meaning breath or vapour. It refers to that which lasts no more than a fragile moment like the breath that condenses and quickly disappears on a cold harmattan day. Absolute futility refers to things that are fleeting or insubstantial or to activities that are in vain. Solomon son of King David, a man of wisdom argued in his splendor that life itself and any actions apart from God are futile. Eccl 1:1 and 2
The words of the Teacher, Son of David, King in Jerusalem, “Meaningless! Meaningless!!” says the Teacher, “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.”

Jesus Christ, the Savior of the whole earth also cautioned against living life apart from God and acquiring things at the expense of one’s own soul. Luke 9:25
What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self? Such a life and acquisitions are indeed futile, especially when put in the perspective of where one will spend eternity. I admonish you to please investigate your life and ways of living whether you will be qualified if Jesus should return today. To be continued …..

Prayer
Lord Jesus, make me to stand firm in you all the time and help me to observe your will till the very end. Strengthen me through the power of the Holy Spirit to overcome the strategies of Satan and his cohort In Jesus Name.

THEME: JOURNEY TO GOD’S CITY

TOPIC: TEMPTATION AN OBSTACLE TO OVERCOME

SCRIPTURE: EXODUS 32:1, MATTHEW 4:1-11

INTRODUCTION:

In continuation from the last episode, many things are on ground surrounding us and bringing about confusion to our lives. God has been speaking and still speaking so that we might be careful to observe his word [the Bible], and keep them in our mind, meditating in it day and night as this will keep us off the trap of the enemy [Satan]. It is unfortunate however that people are looking for a way to satisfy their ways of living as they journey to Gods city, their search for the unknown has often led them to trying different things without considering Jesus Christ who is the way to the City of God. The opportunity to view the truth that leads to God is what we share. However, we would consider the following truth as had begun from the last episode.

Second thing to know is:

Temptation a pit fall Exodus 32:1

When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered round Aaron and said, ‘come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow, Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.’

Watch and pray Jesus said, so that you will not fall into temptation Matt 26:41a Temptation does not consider age or size and has no regards for status. It comes to pull down anyone that is available and is off guard. Have you ever struggle with having to choose between the way of the Lord and the way of the world? Sometimes the pressure of friend suggesting evil and wickedness to you in order to get along with people could be a serious challenge. Note that the influence of others often override the good intention you have learnt long ago. I admonish you to stand firm in the fear of the Lord and His wisdom so that you will not be swayed by influence of friends or people who are sinners. An adage says ‘A Sheep that be-friend a dog will hunt.’ We have to face reality which is the truth, the fear of the LORD.

Prov. 1:7 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.” The fear of the LORD and His wisdom enables His children not to be swept away into sin and folly by sinners. It is therefore an error to reject wisdom. Rejection here means chasing an empty dream which will come to a terrible end. Those who have rejected the way of the Lord for a life of sin will not heed such words of wisdom. They go on their chosen course, unknown to them that they are setting an ambush for themselves and not their supposed victim[s]. They think they are attacking others when in reality they attack their own lives. The result of their conspiracy takes the lives of those who pursue dishonest gain.

Let’s have a view of the Israelites’ error at mount Sinai. No one can go very long in life without spiritual leadership neither can the modern Church without ‘Moses’, a pastor or someone appointed and anointed by God as a spiritual leader being present. While Moses stood before the Lord on Mount Sinai, the people cried to Aaron ‘Make us gods’. In just a little time as a result of pressure, Aaron agreed to their demands. Same is evident of spiritual leaders today. Unless we draw close to God, we may not be far from the ‘golden calf’. Some Churches today give people what they want instead of what they need. This is evident as some leaders have given themselves up into the trap of people who are mediocre. Meaning that they have given their leadership call into the hands of men who nurture them with gifts and luxuries. They now control their Sheep taking instructions from men rather than from God. They have forgotten the Word of God that said ‘watch the kind of gift you receive, gift blind the eye’ Deuteronomy 16:19. Do not prevent justice or show partiality. Do not accept a bribe for bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.

Furthermore, some leaders are like dove easily deceived and senseless. Hosea 7:11. They call, and sought for people who would dance to their music as they stray into destruction. However, if they would cry out to God from their heart and turn from their rebellious hearts against God, He will restore them back to Himself and their original assignment.

The origin and knowledge of the calf is that it was one of the great gods of the Egyptians. It was part of their possession. Sacrifices were offered to it and lascivious dance in its honour. It was believed to be the originator of life. Regrettably, golden calves abound in this present time in lots of places including the Church. One of the great plays of Satan is using visible elements to distract one from focusing on God. TBC

THEME: JOURNEY TO THE CITY OF GOD TOPIC: GOD'S RECOMMENDATIONS: A LESSON FOR CHRISTIANS
TEXT: Matthew 4: 1- 11; Jeremiah 35:1-15

INTRODUCTION: In continuation of the last episode, the Scripture teaches about false teaching of which we should be aware of in 2 Timothy chapter two. This was supported by Proverbs chapter seven which draw our attention to the power of seducing false teachings using the figure of a treacherous wife, who in the absence of her husband allures a youth to do the detestable.

The word of God [Bible] is the only one that contains the teaching that leads to life. The phrase in Prov. 1:2 ‘the apple of the eye’ reveals that the eye is tender and delicate, implying that we should treat the Bible as we do this sensible eye of ours. We are therefore encouraged to use the Bible with the same frequency that we use our fingers. In other word, we are to treat the Bible as much a part of our family, as blood relatives. However, we must be careful and aware of strange women, likened to a Christian who is double minded and does not worship the true God but rather fall into the way of false doctrine. All of that are Satan, Beelzebub, Apollyon and Legion’s strategy of drifting Christians into their trade fair.

Let’s consider the following:

God’s Instruction a Sure Guide. Jeremiah 35:2.
An instruction that comes from God is a teaching that leads to the right way, attaching pack full of wisdom. God’s approval and commendation of the descendants of RECAB was a thing of interest and note. These people kept their father Jonadab’s command and were obedient to his instructions. What a lesson Christians who sometimes become hardened and continue in disobedience in spite of strong and meaningful messages on Sunday worship services, Bible study, Television, Tracts, Radio etc. Some will conclude by saying ‘THE GOD WE SERVE IS NOT THAT WICKED’ while others will say ‘LEAVE US ALONE’ Has God reported us to you? When have you become a supervisor over us? These ones have forgotten the Scripture that says ‘stop listening to instruction my son and you will stray from the works of knowledge. Meaning anything that steers a person away from the Bible is called ‘error’ by the Holy Spirit.
Proverbs 19:16 says “He who obeys instructions guards his life, but he who is contemptuous of his ways will die.
The implication is that the way of understanding is the Bible. To leave that way is to leave life and completely lost in Satan’s trade market. Listen, Jesus does not judge like mere men, He is merciful and his grace is always sufficient. But take a moment and listen to what Apostle Peter says: ‘We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved just as they are’. Acts 15:11.
Meaning that since they met Christ, they met their instructor whose grace continue to instruct them to resist sin and Satan’s trade fair. A man or woman who sin continually as a Christian has discarded the instruction of the grace of God. The fact that you are aware of the grace does not stop temptations and trial from coming to you but when it comes to you as a Christian who is on guard and conversant with the word of God, it will meet with resistance as grace is sufficient since you have completely surrendered your life to Jesus Christ.

God told Jeremiah the Prophet to go to the temple and use one of the rooms. As such he is to give the descendants of Jonadab w**e [intoxicating beverage] to drink. Historically, Jonadab was not an idol worshipper but a man who had zeal for Jehovah. The evidence is traced to his children found in 2 kings 10:15 and 17
v.15 After he left there, he came upon Jehonadab son of Recab who was on his way to meet him. Jehu greeted him and said “Are you in accord with me, as I am with you?” ‘I am, Jehonadab answered, If so said Jehu ‘give me your hand’ so he did and Jehu helped him up into the chariot.
V. 17 When Jehu came to Samaria he killed those who were left there of Ahab’s family. He destroy them according to the Word of the Lord spoken to Elijah.
When Jehu was coming out in order to destroy God’s enemy as commanded, Jehonadab son of Recab was fully in support of him. The origin of Jonadab could be traced to the descendants of Jethro, Moses’ father- in- law. He commanded that his sons must not drink intoxicating w**e or dwell in houses forever. These commands were binding from generation to generation. These ones remain faithful to their father and kept their command. The purpose of such command is that they would not follow the religion and practice of Baal as others. Therefore God who had been teaching and instructing Judah showed them the right way with wonderful counsel which was turned down by Judah and as such He used Jonadab’s descendants as a godly example to Judah. This should be an example to Christians as well.
What about you? You are aware of God’s concern that Christians should be off mediocracy, hypocrisy, and maintaining a stand ‘Yes or No’ [let your yes be yes and no be no]. However, despite God’s words of correction, we often remain adamant and enjoying our lofty ways rather than obeying the will of God. Remember that only grace and the Cross can keep you moving in Faith so you can be a beneficiary of God’s blessing.
To be continue.
PRAYER.

Ask the Lord to make you an instrument of recommendation for this generation and those to come

Ask the Lord to help you keep his commands as you journey to God's city

THEME
Text: Matthew 4:1-11; 7:13-14

Enter through the narrow gate for wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it. Matthew 7:13-14

Two targets: eternal life and eternal death, it is your choice. Jesus gave us options and we are left with choices. The first is the gate that leads to the kingdom of heaven which is life and the second is separation from God in hell. Jesus followed the points he was making from Matthew 7:1ff. He outlined principles of careful living to get right with God. In verse 13 and 14, he revealed two doors suggesting life and death of which decision can be reach. There are many and varied ways contrite heart earn desires to be among "few" (those who followed the narrow gate) for the requirements are greater than most are willing to accept.

However, I will ask you this question, what do you think makes some Christians hate standing or sitting keeping long in God's presence? Holiness of course! The Israelites were advised to keep off because of the position of their heart (evil). However, the survey of all that God had in His mind as regard holiness, personal cleansing and keeping his command is a serious matter. When we critically look at God's demand in Exodus 19:10-13ff

And the Lord said to Moses, go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes and be ready by the third day because on that day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, be careful that you do not go up the mountain or touch the foot of it, whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death...

To enjoy a good aroma of worship, God gave a command that Moses consecrates the people which means, set apart exclusively to the Lord. Although sanctification then was mostly external, meaning symbolic however, the coming of Christ and the cross makes it a spiritual work. As at that time, it is not as if God is unapproachable, infact, He wanted man to approach Him, but due to the sinfulness of man; this at that time was the best that could be done. In the New Testament however, it is obvious that man was limited as to how he could approach God but thanks to God for the cross which serves as the way out.

Now the whole mountain became holy because of God's presence, therefore, Israel must keep herself from the Tabernacle Numbers 3:10. They must abstain from s*xual relations not because s*x is sinful so long it is between the couple, but because it may leave the participants ceremonially unclean Leviticus 15:18; 1 Samuel 21:4-5. Like the Israelites, we too are mostly found with this same errors and do things amiss against God because of familiarity. Some of the Christians behavior and attitude towards God are obvious, some have a little respect for God yet unknown to them, they are hypocrites in disguise, this is an offense to God. As a true Christian we must be careful and watchful as not taken advantage over the grace we enjoy in the presence of God and not be disqualified at the last day.

Hebrews 12:1-2, therefore since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

The above is an important and needful exhortation making the most effort that can benefit your self belief in God. Your life should be similar to God's commendation of a tribe mention in the scripture (this will be discussed in detail). However, once you can incorporate some of these efforts in your life, you will be able to grow into a strong and reliable Christian as Christ is waiting at the top to welcome you. Hebrews 12:2

THEME: THE CHOICE
TOPIC: MEANINGLESS FAIR
TEXT: Matthew 4:1-11

As noted from the previous episode, the fair introduces confusion so that people would not be able to focus on that which are suitable for the city of God. However, only the living passes through the meaningless trade center where people's intellect and emotions are tampered with. Many people that is adults and young adults are misled into believing that Christian life has no difficulties or troubles. Therefore when difficulties arises, they misinterpret them as signs that God does not love nor care about them. These challenges are available because we live in an imperfect world while some are ways of God in dealing with his people who ignored his ways.

Meaningless fair - In the meaningless fair, they sold honour, pride, titles, kingdoms, pleasures, wives, husbands, children, cheats, thefts, abortion, murder, adultery, false witness and several lots of ungodly lifestyles. While those men were passing through meaningless town, Beelzebub, Apollyon, Legion and others called them to look and buy the detestable. Christian and faithful put their fingers in their ears, covered their faces and cry saying:

"Turn my eyes away from worthless things, preserve my life according to your word (Psalm 119:37).

This reveals the fact that they were aware of meaningless teaching that does not harmonize the Bible. On the other hand, the Bible teaches that you have those enemies who are stopper of the race to God's city. Note, the tempter is a wicked spirit being who opposes God and tempt God's people. We have found that even though he was beaten at the cross by Christ, he still has power to influence men for evil.

Isaiah affirms this when he said "Because both Israel and Babylon worshipped created things instead of the creator, they lacked wisdom (Isaiah 44:18). While God made humankind in His image, deluded human beings shaped gods in their own likeness. Also, Paul indicated in Romans 1:20-25, "When human exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal people, their thinking became nonsense and their minds were darkened. The Lord then gave them over to the evil desires of their heart. Isaiah add to this prophecy, the Lord shut their eyes, instead of choosing God and having their eyes opened, they chose idolatry. Now they could not see (Isaiah 44:19-20).

The spiritual blindness of the idol worshipper was so great that he did not have the insight to reflect on his behavior. Unable to grasp that he was bowing down to the same material he used for fuel (wood) the idolator embraced deception, he could not free himself from his folly because his deceived mind had led him astray. Having an understanding of his folly and yeilding to repentance were not possible as long as he lived in spiritual blindness.

To this end, the Bible calls the tempter "the wicked one", "the devil", "an adversary who seeks to devour", "that old serpent" and accuser of our brethren" (Matthew 13:19). Be aware that he stage the fair for you and doing everything possible to outsmart you. Would you loose your guard and be fooled to fall into his snare? God forbid. Run, I mean run and get out of his set trap.

Ponder
What is your decision, what is your plan, after knowing what the fair is all about, would you still fall victim of the devices of the devil to be partaker of the fair or will you close your eyes and looking into Jesus to help you? To be continued. . . .

TOPIC: GOD WILL NOT LET US GO
TEXT: HOSEA 11:1-10

Are you aware that God wants people to respond to His love with sincerity, not with superficial religious activities. In Hosea message, God began His statement by recalling the past days’ event. The word translated child v.1 suggests immaturity. God was concerned about the special relationship that existed between them from the beginning. Going back to the days of the exodus, there was an intimate relationship which the Israelites were aware of however, the more God shows his love to them, the more they run away from God. This is the picture of the relationship of Christians in the world today.

In the days of Hosea God continued to remind Israel of the love he had showered on them. He taught Israel “to walk, taking them by the arms” and many others. Despite God’s attention to Israel, He received no acknowledgment in return for all He has done for them. His people the Hebrew refuse to please Him. We all know that over the years God has dealt kindly with all of us. He watched out for our expansion and guided our steps. When we fall, He pick us up to celebrate our achievement.

Permit me to ask you this question, in past years what has been your response to God’s love for you? Have you said, Lord I am determined to follow you from today till your return or do you prefer to pursue other goals rather than to form a close relationship with Him or have you written yourself off to say it is too late, God cannot have an intimate relationship with you? Note, He has not given up on you He wants you to enjoy the privilege of being His child. Take a bold step to move toward Him now for a new beginning.

God on daily basis send warning to us from His word, the Bible, 5-7.

When the Israelites were adamant God pictured what judgment would mean for them. He reminded them of the Egyptian experience when they were slaves in a strange land. Once judgment began, they couldn’t look to Him to reverse the course of their destruction they had chosen. Therefore as an expression of His preserving love, He described the danger Israel was facing. Part of God’s preserving love for us can be found in the warnings He sends to us. Throughout the Bible, He warns of the negative impact of sin and rebellion in our lives. The problems we face in life such as stress, loss of peace and many more can be signal that all is not well in our spiritual lives. But if we turn to God before it is too late, we can escape the slavery that accompanies poor choice.

God’s decision 8-9.

God considered the move of handling Israel over to destruction. For a moment God had made up His mind He would not bring judgment on Israel yet His patience had decided in favor of holing out for Israel to a change of heart. The rationale God set forth for His decision is based on God’s nature. He is God not a human. He rises above revenge. We extend mercy to others because we ourselves need mercy. God has no similar need. His mercy flows over His compassionate holiness.

Finally, God looked ahead, hope welled up in him, judgement had been pronounced but the sentence was suspended. The judge anticipated a change of heart on the part of the accused that they would follow the Lord. God chose the image of a roaring lion to convey this hopeful assessment. The lion’s roar here was not intended to intimidate but to call to God’s people to come home. When they hear it, his children will come trembling. Trembling refers to an attitude of reverence.
