*DAILY ENCOUNTER DEVOTIONAL FOR WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 23RD, 2022*

*Hymn*: BH 413: Who Is on the Lord's Side?

*Text:* Psalm37:21-28,34-40

*RBT Passage:* Deuteronomy 5-8

*TOPIC*: THE LORD LOVES RIGHTEOUSNESS

*GOLDEN TEXT*: For the LORD loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones. Wrong doers will be completely destroyed; the offspring of the wicked will perish. *Psalm 37:28, NIV*

An old scholar was asked how he could reconcile the death of Jesus Christ (the sinless) for sinners with the justice of God. He replied that man's justice is crude and imperfect. For example, if a man steals ₦200,000. 00 and spends it. When he is caught, he will be punished. Nevertheless, the stolen money will not be returned to its original owner; the owner is not given fair treatment, even though the thief is made to suffer for his crime. Similarly, if a man kills three children, he would be killed. However, the children's lives cannot be restored. These are examples of humankind's justice – loss and pain. God's justice results in gain and joy. God is just and righteous by nature. So also, He expects all His children to be just in all their dealings. Because He is just, He favours the righteous, and blesses them. Also, because He cannot tolerate injustice and wickedness, He punishes the wicked. The psalmist, in today's text, emphasised that the righteous will inherit the land because of their generosity but the wicked shall be cut off (vv. 21-22). God is pleased with the ways of the righteous and He upholds them, even whenthey fall but He rejects the wicked ones (vv. 23, 24, 27).
It pays to be just and righteous, no matter how difficult it may seem at present. The righteous people of old, like Job and Jeremiah, were vindicated and blessed. Certainly, God will not forget the sacrifice and commitment of your righteous living (see 1Corinthians 15:58). You will be fully rewarded.

*Perceive*: - God will not forget the sacrifices and commitment of your righteous

*JESUS BORN INTO AN UNJUST WORLD*

_“And she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger because there was no guest room available for them.”_ *Luke 2:7, NIV*

Some of us were born on the way to, or from the farm; inside rooms; small or big hospitals among other places. Where someone is born depends on one’s parents and the circumstances surrounding one’s birth. In the case of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, His story of birth is remarkable and thought- provoking.

Jesus was born during the reign of Augustus Caesar who issued a decree that a census should be carried out throughout the Roman Empire. Jesus was to be born in Bethlehem, the city of David. Bethlehem signifies the house of bread, a proper place for the Bread of life to be born.

The census took Mary and Joseph from Nazareth in Galilee to Bethlehem in Judea because they were of David’s lineage. He was laid in a manger instead of a cradle because there was no room in the inn. The Messiah was wrapped in a swaddling cloth far from a good suit of child bed linen.

Christ’ birth has hereby put contempt upon all worldly glory and taught us to slight it. Since His own received Him not, let us not be overwhelmed if they receive us not.

Insight:_The birth of Jesus is light to the world_

Prayer:_Lord, let my existence in this world bring You glory._

DAILY ENCOUNTER WITH GOD
FRIDAY JUNE 4, 2021
RBT: JOB 35-38
TOPIC: OVERCOME WORRY THROUGH FAITH
TEXT: LUKE 12:22-34
HYMN: BH 254: CAST THY BURDEN ON THE LORD
Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear." Luke 12:22, NIV
An old fiction was told of an angel who met a man carrying a heavy sack. The angel enquired, "What is in the sack?" "My worries", said the man. "Let me see them," said the angel. Opening the sack, it was empty! The man was surprised. He said he had two great worries: one was for yesterday which he now saw was past and the other for tomorrow that had not yet come. The angel told him he needed no sack, and the man gladly threw it away.
In today's reading, Jesus warned His disciples not to be anxious and worried over the necessities of life. He gave them four illustrations to buttress His points: (i) Life and body mean more than things; (ii) God feeds the birds; (iii) A man's life is not altered an hour by worry; and (iv) God clothes the grasses (vs 23-28). The principle is that we are ambassadors of Jesus and He is responsible for supplying our daily needs. This does not mean that we should not work to earn a living or we should not think and plan our lives. Nothing should make us anxious or worried. Faith is the remedy for worry. We can overcome worry through faith. From today, cry to God in faith and ask Him to supply your needs.
WISDOM: Stop worrying about things you cannot control.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Are you worry about tomorrow?
FOLLOW-UP ACTION: Have faith and do away with all your worries as you pray and trust God for solution today.
PRAYER: My Father, I overcome my worries through faith in Jesus Christ.
Holy Spirit, send Your peace into my life today. Let Your Spirit be my guide as I journey today.

Bible Text: Jeremiah 37:11-16

PROPHET JEREMIAH IS ARRESTED AND IMPRISONED

"Jeremiah was put into a vaulted cell in a dungeon, where he remained a long time" Jeremiah 37:16, NIV

Martin Luther king Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968, an event that sent shock waves reverberating around the world. A Baptist minister and founder of Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), King had led the civil rights movement that fought segregation and achieved significant civil rights advances for African Americans. His assassination led to the speedy signing of equal housing bill that would be the last significant legislative achievement of the civil rights era.
Truth is bitter. Prophet Jeremiah had earlier prophesied that the Babylonian army would conquer Jerusalem. Meanwhile, certain false prophets had persuaded King Zedekiah that they would defeat the Babylonian army. The king and the people believed the false prophets and hated prophet Jeremiah. Jeremiah was arrested and put in prison. He remained there until his prophecy about the Babylonian capture of Jerusalem was fulfilled.
No one can play games with the Almighty God. When He speaks, no one can change it. God had warned to punish all sinners. The wisest thing is for everyone to turn away from every known sin and unrighteousness. Don’t be caught unawares; God’s judgment is coming upon all evil doers. Repent today and also sound this warning to those around you.

Insight: "Integrity is telling myself the truth. And honesty is telling the truth to other people". - Spencer Johnson

Prayer: Lord, save me from evil doers!

*A PLEA FOR RESTORATION*

*Devotional Reading:* _Lamentations 3:22-23_

*Background Lesson Scripture:* Lamentations 5

*GOLDEN TEXT*
_Restore us to yourself, O LORD, that we may return; renew our days as of old._ *- Lamentations 5:2*

*Objectives:* _By the end of the lesson, class members should be able to:_
• Identify possible reasons the people of Jerusalem suffered and lamented greatly;
• Discuss the devastating consequences of sin;
• Renew their commitment to pray to God for restoration.

*INTRODUCTION*
The society we live in is characterised by different challenges, which sometimes result in suffering and punishment. While some are caused by individuals, others may be collaborative. Someone once said, "There are often tragedies, personal and collective, so devastating and inexplicable that human reasoning cannot easily comprehend." He concluded that in such instance, the only immediate response is regret, lamentation or both. This was the case of the people of Judah. To them, the fall of Jerusalem meant more than the loss of their beautiful and indisputable capital city because the city was God's own city. When the city was burned and the temple destroyed, some of them were taken captive to Babylon. Certainly, they knew that God had delivered them into the hands of their enemy. While they were in exile, Jeremiah sat down and lamented, expressed grief, not necessarily because of the humiliation and suffering of the people but that God had rejected His covenant people as a result of their sins.

The people believed that Jerusalem cannot be conquered and that their king was invincible (Lamentations 4:12, 20). Little did they know that God had decided to punish them and nothing could stop Him. The passage vividly depicts defeat, loss of freedom, land, respect, cruelty, forced labour and starvation, r**e and murder because of the sinful attitude of the people. However, Jeremiah prayed to God for restoration on behalf of his people. The focus of today's lesson is a reminder that God is merciful and willing to restore His people when we seek Him through prayer.

*THE LESSON EXPLAINED*

*A. Cry for Mercy Lamentations 5:1-16*
When the people of Israel were taken captive and Jerusalem was destroyed, Jeremiah sat down and composed this song of lamentation and a prayer to God for mercy on behalf of Jerusalem (v. 1). From verses 2 to 16, he described their disgraceful and regretful condition saying:
• The land that God gave to them and their houses have been given to strangers.
• They had become orphans and their mothers, widows.
• They are made to pay for the water they drink and the wood they use for fuel.
• Everything is taxed by the Chaldeans.
• They are weary as a result of servitude and totally worn out for lack of rest.
• They have become beggars from Egypt to Assyria.
• They are ruled by slaves and there is no one to free them.
• Their women are daily ravished in Zion and their virgins in the towns of Judah. Even so elders were no longer respected.
• Music from the young was no more heard; their joy disappeared and turned to mourning
• Above all, the crown that symbolises their glory and honour embodied in the city of Jerusalem completely eluded them. For this reason he said, "Woe to us, for we have sinned!" (v. 16b)

The people sold themselves cheaply. In lamentation, they expressed their awful condition, believing that God will deliver them. It should be noted that the people knew that their suffering was not necessarily because of their own sins, which they acknowledged in verse 7, but the sins of their forefathers (Jeremiah 31:29-30). They recognised and admitted that the tragedy that befell them as a nation is the fault of their ancestors against their initial claim that God is ultimately responsible for their predicament. Apart from the general suffering, individual groups also suffered; the women and ladies were utterly r**ed and brutalised. The elders were grossly dishonoured and the city gate became empty of wise elders. Believers should know that there are always devastating consequences for sins, just like the experience of the people of Israel who suffered severely. However, we should also remember that God is merciful. Based on this attribute, Jeremiah began the narration of their suffering by praying and asking God to save them from their disgrace (v. 1).

*DISCUSSION TIME*
1. Discuss the causes or Israel's suffering and compare it with our suffering today as a nation or as individuals.
2. Discuss the similarities and the differences between the days of Jeremiah and ours.

*B. Israel's Prayer for Restoration - Lamentations 5:17-22*
Jeremiah had already associated the cause of their predicament with the sins of their ancestors (v.7). As a result, he confesses saying:
• Their hearts are sick and fainted.
• Their eyes dimmed as a result of the painful tears.
• Mount Zion is wrecked and ruined and has become the dungeon of wild animals.

Jeremiah, however, concluded the chapter by focusing on God's eternal and unchanging nature. He said in verse 19, "You, O Lord, reign forever; your throne endures from generation to generation." In other words, even though the admired temple is destroyed (v.18), he had confidence in the fact that God is sovereign and He rules over the universe forever. Nevertheless, his question in verse 20 seemed to him as if God had forgotten them for a long time and wondered if He will ever remember them again. He, therefore, prayed earnestly to God to bring them back to Himself and restore their ancient glory (v. 21). He believed that God's anger is temporary and so He will not forget His children forever. One of the attributes of God is compassion. Whenever we sin and demonstrate genuine repentance coupled with faith and obedience, there will be restoration.

*DISCUSSION TIME*
1. Identify some biblical characters that genuinely repented of their sins and received forgiveness.
2. What are the necessary steps we need to take before restoration can take place?

*Fellowship and Ministry Building Activity*
• Divide the class into two groups. Let group A list the different areas the people of Israel suffered, according to the passage and group B should list the lessons they have learned from it. They are to put together their resolution and read it aloud.

*TAKE HOME*
• God does not forget His children forever.
• God is compassionate.
• If we turn to God in repentance, He will accept us.
• We should trust God more, even in difficult situations.
• There are consequences for disobedience.
• Believers should have faith in God and hope for better days ahead.

*SUNDAY SCHOOL*
*APRIL 11, 2021*
*TOPIC: CONFESSION AND CORRECTION*
*DEVOTIONAL READING: Ezekiel 18:25-32*
*BACKGROUND SCRIPTURES: Ezra 9-10*
*LESSON SCRIPTURE: Ezra 10:1-12*

*GOLDEN TEXT*
“O my God, I am too ashamed and disgraced to lift up my face to you, my God, because our sins are higher than our heads and our guilt has reached to the heavens. Ezra 9:6

*OBJECTIVES:*
By the end of the lesson, class members should be able to:
• Highlight some of the problems that were common in the days of Ezra;
• Discuss the steps Christians can take in order to return to God;
• State at least three lessons they have learnt from the life of Ezra and the Israelites.

*INTRODUCTION*
The famous proverb, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is still relevant in our relationship with God and humankind. The Israelites did not remember the importance of this proverb neither did they pay attention to God's warnings through His prophets. According to the law of Moses, they were forbidden from marrying people from the land of Canaan so that they will not be led astray _ idolatry (Exodus 34:11-16; Deuteronomy 7:1-6). Unfortunately, they disobeyed God. Some of the returnees from exile including their leaders had foreign wives. Some older Jewish men divorced their wives and married younger foreign women, thereby producing children of mixed religious loyalties. Worse still, they began to follow their pagan practices against the will of God. As they continued in this unwholesome behaviour God's holy name was profaned. When the news reached Ezra, he was grieved. He tore his clothes in despair, shaved his hair and beard and sat down in sorrow. He prayed and confessed that they had no right to come to God's presence (Ezra 9:3, 15).

Today's lesson focuses on the plan made by the Israelites to end intermarriage, under the leadership of Ezra. He encouraged them to confess their sins to the God of their ancestors, to separate themselves from foreign wives and endeavour to do what is r

DAILY ENCOUNTER WITH GOD

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 6, 2021

RBT: LEVITICUS 26-27

TOPIC: JESUS HEALS SON OF GALILEAN OFFICIAL

TEXT: JOHN 4:43-51

HYMN: BH 86: THE GREAT PHYSICIAN

Jesus said to him, "Go your way; your son lives. "So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and went his way." John 4:50, NKJV

An undeniable fact is that sickness can be very devastating. Sickness, sometimes, spreads like social network, affecting people directly or indirectly. When a person is not the direct victim, sickness still finds a way to steal from the peace of mind and sometimes a person's ability to concentrate. This is usually the case when the victim directly involved is either a member of one's family or a lived one. On the flip side of things, nothing restores hope and joy more than a sick fellow who recovers in time.
Jesus in today's passage demonstrates His divinity by healing the son of a noble man of Galilee. Sickness and death are common denominators to all men since the fall of Adam and Eve at the garden of Eden. In Christ, however, there is assurance of life, security and healing. This assurance is strengthened only by faith in the words of Christ --- that are spirit and life.
Whenever you are sick, have assurance in the word of Jesus Christ, the greatest Physician. He is your Healer and Saviour. But it is your faith that attracts His healing power. Therefore when you pray for healing, you must believe in your heart that God hears you and you must act out your belief with patience.

WISDOM: Doctors treats but only Jesus Christ heals.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Where is your first port of call when faced with a serious life challenge?

FOLLOW-UP ACTION: Pray for a sick friend or brother today and have faith for his healing.

PRAYER: Lord, save Your people from a life of turmoil with no peace, direction and stability.

O Lord, empower me to be an agent of change in my environment.

DAILY ENCOUNTER WITH GOD
MONDAY FEBRUARY 1, 2021
RBT: LEVITICUS 14-15
TOPIC: RECEIVE THE WATER OF LIFE
TEXT: REVELATION 21:1-7
HYMN: BH 87: THE LILY OF THE VALLEY.
"To the thirsty I will give the water without cost from the spring of the water of life." Revelation 21:6b, NIV
One basic instinct that all human beings have is the craving for water -- that is, everybody thirsts. We are all in some way connected to water. At least 60 percent of the human body is made up of water and that is why the longest period a man can go without water is three days.
Today's passage is about the present church and promises for the future, from the one who is in control of situations --- the alpha and omega. Presently, while here on earth, the church suffers all manners of afflictions and trials that draw her to tears. This is similar to experiences of many African societies where water is offered to grieving individuals. Jesus, here, offers His children water from a pure, refreshing and eternal fountain. This water will not only soothe and comfort, but will also give abundant life.
Christians and Non-Christians suffer thirst. In the same way, God puts a natural longing in all humans for Him. All thinks about God. The atheist, the non-conformist and religionist are not exempted. This thirst cannot be quenched, except in Jesus Christ who is the fountain of living water. When we draw and drink from this water there is an offer of satisfaction --- never thirst again, and guess what? All things become new for us.
WISDOM: Receiving water of life is hinged on accepting Jesus Christ as the Lord and Saviour.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Are you seeking fulfilment outside Jesus?
FOLLOW-UP ACTION: Witness to someone, today, to accept Jesus Christ as personal Saviour and Lord.
PRAYER: O Lord, satisfy my craving for You as the giver of the water of life.
Lord, I thank You for the gift of a new month.
Pray for a fresh release of unction to function upon all participants at the General Workers Conference West II: Ogbomoso, Kwara, Ekiti, Ondo, and Osun Conferences, which will be held today and tomorrow at Beulah Baptist Centre, Ogbomoso.

DAILY ENCOUNTER WITH GOD
FRIDAY JANUARY 29, 2021
RBT: LEVITICUS 5-7
TOPIC: JESUS' FINAL WORDS AND ASCENSION
TEXT: LUKE 24:44-53
HYMN: BH 279: HE LIVES
When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Luke 24:50-51, NIV
Saying goodbye is sometimes difficult, especially when you have developed affection and concern for the people to whom you have to say goodbye. The disciples must have greatly enjoyed Jesus' presence among them again after His resurrection. Perhaps, they had desired that they would continue to enjoy the comfort and glamour of the physical presence of the Lord with them. However, it was time for His ascension and Jesus knew how disheartening that might be for His disciples. So, He opened their minds to understand the scriptures about His suffering and death. He also reminded them of His resurrection and the promise of the Father. With this solid foundation laid, Jesus blessed them and ascended to heaven while they watched.
Parting with the Lord must have been traumatic for the disciples, but their understanding of the scriptures helped them. Rather than becoming grooming after 'a major loss' as they watched their Master leaving them, "they worshipped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy" (vs 52).
What an unusual response to a painful departure!
Perhaps, you are sad and depressed over an issue in your life or in your family because you have not seen it through the light of the scriptures. It is even possible you are not making sense out of the Word of God that comes to you because you don't seem to understand. Will you turn to the ascended Lord today to speak to your situation and to grant you a mind of understanding?
WISDOM: Understanding the scriptures puts our understanding of everything else in the right perspective.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: How do you react to purposeful separation with your loved ones?
FOLLOW-UP ACTION: Search the Scriptures to know the mind of God regarding those challenges, or even traumatic, experiences of your life.
PRAYER: Open the eyes of my heart, Lord, that I may see You and see things in the light of Your plans.
Pray for a fresh release of grace upon all participants at General Workers Conferences West I: Oke-Ogun Conference, which will hold today and tomorrow at FBC, Ago Are.
