HUMILITY : A DEEP AND ABIDING SENSE OF MEEKNESS BEFORE GOD AND MAN.
TEXT: JAMES 4:6-11; 1 PETER 5:5-6
Humility is that sense of having a modest or low view of one's importance, which is a far cry from what we saw in our study yesterday on man's sense of high loftiness, pride ,haughtiness and self centeredness that will one day be lowered and bowed down. As this is happening, God alone will be exalted. Sometimes, it takes man to eat grass like Nebuchadnezzar before they acknowledge that God truly rules in the affairs of men (Daniel 4:32-34). One who is humble will acknowledge their limited knowledge and the small extent of their understanding, compared to our all- knowing God. They will recognise their limited ability and strength, compared to our God with matchless power and ability. They will understand the insufficiency of their own wisdom and their dependence on God for guidance and direction. Such a one is not greedy for honour nor want to appear uppermost or exalted above their neighbours.
For such a one with a humble spirit, God is pleased to lift up and give grace, even more grace. On the other hand, God resist the proud. God wages war or content with the proud. This is because the one who is proud before man will one day be proud towards God. So ,God resist the proud because the proud resists God. Satan is eternally damned because of his proud rebellion towards God. The humble heart is quick to acknowledge the need for God, eager to confess our feebleness and frailty . We gentle plead with us as God's people, especially the younger ones who God has raised and is raising up in their secular endeavors not to allow themselves to be puffed up by knowledge. That we all avoid arrogant, scornful and self - justify attitudes, but learn to be courteous, meek and respectful to God and man.
