MESSAGE

TOPIC: Overcoming the Depravity and Vices of Envy in Men
TEXT: 1 Samuel 18:9–11

In life, people around us — whether family members or friends will succeed in their goals and achieve great things. When this happens, we should not be envious of them. Instead, we should rejoice with them, continue praying, and keep believing that God will also help us achieve our own goals in His appointed time.

From our text, we see that Saul became very envious of David because the children of Israel praised David after he helped them defeat Goliath. Rather than appreciating David’s victory and contribution, Saul allowed envy to fill his heart.

As Christians, we should not behave in such a manner. We are called to rejoice with our brethren when they succeed and celebrate the blessings of others with a sincere heart.

Also, when God blesses us, we should not hide our blessings because others are envious of us. We should not reduce our abilities, talents, or achievements simply because someone dislikes them or feels jealous. The blessings we receive are from the Lord, and we should allow His light to shine through us.

As we do this, may the Lord help us overcome every spirit of envy and grant us hearts filled with love and gratitude, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

‎‎After David killed Goliath, all the children of Israel began to praise David. But Saul wasn't happy about this, because he felt all the children of Israel were praising David more than him. This caused Saul to be angry and jealous of David, which led to the desire to kill David.

On Saul's attempt to kill David, God used Jonathan (the son of Saul) to help David to escape the grip of his father and also to plead with his father to leave David alone.

‎As Christians, we are not to get jealous or angry at our brethren just because they are receiving more praise than you, for the bible said in Romans 12:15 (Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep). So we are to rejoice when our brethren achieve a particular goal or get to a certain height.

‎Also as Christians, we are to be watchful as the praises we give ourselves, we should ensure that we don't downgrade someone just to raise another person high.

‎We are also to understand that God will protect us from any evil or danger in our way, just as he protected David. We are to be our brother's keeper, just like Jonathan.

‎If we see a friend going the wrong way, on a path into danger, we are to alert them and stop them from going that way.
‎
‎And as we do this, may God help and protect us. Amen
