WHY DO CATHOLICS PRAY THE REGINA CAELI DURING EASTER TIME?

INTRODUCTION
From Holy Saturday to Pentecost we sing or recite one of the Church’s most joyful anthems, the Regina Caeli (O, Queen of Heaven) and it is customarily said in place of the Angelus at the stipulated times the Angelus was said; in the Morning by 6:00am, Afternoon by 12:00noon and in the Evening by 6:00pm

ORIGIN OF THE REGINA CAELI
According to The Golden Legend, a thirteenth century work on the lives of the Saints, Pope Saint Gregory the Great in the 6th century was leading a procession asking for relief from a pestilence afflicting the population of Rome. Being carried in the procession was an icon of the Blessed Virgin reputedly painted by Saint Luke. Suddenly, the air was filled with a heavenly perfume dispelling the pestilence.

Looking up, Saint Gregory beheld angels singing: “O, Queen of Heaven rejoice, Alleluia! For He whom you deserved to bear, Alleluia! Has risen as He said, Alleluia!” To which the holy Pope added: “O, pray to God for us, Alleluia!”

At the same time, the holy pontiff saw the angel of death sheathing his sword atop the Hill of Hadrian, today the Castle of Sant’Angelo. Since then this story has been associated with the origins of the Regina Caeli.

The good news is that the Church in Rome received two gifts that day. The disease of the city was cured and a new prayer was then, established to help remind the faithful of joy even in times of great suffering.

SIGNIFICANCE / MEANING OF THE REGINA CAELI FOR CATHOLICS.
Firstly, The idea is to rejoice with Our Blessed Lady that her Son, after a grueling passion and frightful death, is alive again. While the prayer of the Angelus celebrates Jesus’ Incarnation, the Regina Caeli celebrates His Resurrection and “congratulates” the Mother on her Son’s victory over sin and death.

Secondly, the prayer gives us assurance that Jesus is truly risen. This also reflects the journey that all the disciples had to undertake, encountering the Risen Christ and thus leaving behind their doubt to become the witness of Christ.

On a final note, the prayer recalls to us what the season of Easter is all about. We offer joyful praise to God with the word “alleluia” six different times. Also, we proclaim different variations of the word “joy” five consecutive times (rejoice, rejoice, glad, joy, joys).

CONCLUSION
The Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Heaven, is invited to rejoice at the Resurrection of her Son. In the final prayer we ask God the Father that, as we have been filled with joy through the Resurrection, so we may come to experience the joys of eternal life. We too are rejoicing as we commemorate the Resurrection of Jesus and are moved to ask for our own resurrection to eternal happiness in Heaven.

TODAY THE MOST HOLY CATHOLIC CHURCH WORLDWIDE CELEBRATE THE FEAST OF ST PETER AND ST PAUL - APOSTLES AND MARTYRS: In his Homily Very Rev. Fr. Donatus Tizhe Enjoins Us To Emulate The Life Of This Two Pillars Of The Church. Today as we celebrate these great Solemnity of the two Apostles, St. Peter and St. Paul, the two Apostles of Rome and the pillars of the Universal Church, representing the unity of the Church in St. Peter and his successors, the Popes as the Lord’s very own Vicars on earth, and the evangelical outreach and missionary efforts of the Church as shown by St. Paul and his numerous efforts and journeys to spread the word of God especially to the Gentiles, or the non-Jewish people. That is why St. Peter was known as the Vicar of Christ and the Prince of the Apostles, to signify his leadership and central role among all the Apostles, as the cornerstone on which the Lord has established His Holy Church, as the firm bedrock of faith, a strong foundation on which He built His Church, the Body of Christ, the union of all the faithful people of God. He is truly Peter, the Rock, the symbolic meaning of the name which the Lord Himself has granted on him. St. Paul was known as the Apostle to the Gentiles, as the one who had sown the seeds of faith in so many communities all around the Mediterranean and other parts of the world, marking the beginning of the rapid growth of the Church despite the various persecutions and the many trials and challenges that it encountered. St. Paul through his many missionary journeys and the numerous Epistles or letters that he wrote, had a crucial role in the establishment of the various communities of the faithful. Today, we celebrate their most wonderful life and memory, united together in martyrdom in the Holy City of Rome, the very heart of all Christendom, as both St. Peter and St. Paul by Apostolic traditions, were martyred in that city, the then capital of the great Roman Empire, during the first round of vicious persecutions of Christians. St. Paul was martyred in the immediate aftermath of the Great Fire of Rome by the Roman Emperor Nero, while St. Peter was martyred not very long afterwards during the same reign of the Emperor Nero. Today we celebrate this great Solemnity in their honour, as the great celebration of the entire Universal Church in union with the Church of Rome, of which St. Peter and St. Paul are both patrons of, by virtue of their martyrdom there, and especially for St. Peter as the first Bishop of Rome, through which all the Popes are their successors. Therefore, we celebrate together united as one Church, all in union with our Pope Francis, as the successor of the great Apostle, St. Peter, the first Pope and Vicar of Christ, as well as the great missionary, St. Paul the Apostle. Today, on this special day for the Church, let us all pray together for our Holy Father, Pope Francis, the successor of St. Peter and the current Vicar of Christ. Let us pray for his intentions and seek the Lord’s guidance that He may always bless and guide His Holy Church, and that He will always be with us all through the many trials and challenges we may encounter in life. May He strengthen us in our faith and give us the courage to remain faithful to Him, and to walk in His path at all times. May all of us be ever closer to the Lord and be united as always in the union we share, under the leadership of our Pope Francis, the Vicar of Christ, as the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. Amen.

Today The Most Holy Mother Church Worldwide Invited Us To Celebrate The Feast Of The Visitation Of The Blessed Virgin Mary To Her Cousin Sister St. Elizabeth. In his Homily, Very Rev. Fr. Donatus Tizhe Enjoins us to Emulate the example of our Blessed Mother Mary. She show us the need to visit and care for one another too.

Moreover, The Feast of the Visitation recalls Mary’s visit to her ageing cousin Elizabeth. Both had recently and unexpectedly been told that they would bear children who were central to God’s plans for Israel. Mary took the demanding journey to the hill country of Judaea to share the good news with her cousin. It was always going to be a joyful meeting, one marked by the courtesy of both women.

Courtesy, a virtue with an old-fashioned ring, was the title of a poem by Hilaire Belloc, a notable English Catholic writer. In the verses of the poem he described the quality of courtesy evident in the feasts of Mary’s Annunciation, Visitation and the Birth of Jesus. In the opening verse he praises courtesy:

Of Courtesy, it is much less
Than Courage of Heart or Holiness,
Yet in my Walks it seems to me
That the Grace of God is in Courtesy.

In a later verse he speaks of Mary’s visit to Elizabeth as an expression of courtesy:

Our Lady out of Nazareth rode –
It was Her month of heavy load;
Yet was her face both great and kind,
For Courtesy was in Her Mind.

Courtesy is the perfect word to describe Luke’s account of the Visitation. It is courtesy for a young woman in her own pregnancy to think of her older relative, and to take the trouble to make a hard journey into the hill country to visit her. It was also courteous of her to recognise Elizabeth’s pregnancy as a gift to be celebrated and not merely as a passing event in her human life. She saw Elizabeth’s pregnancy as part of God’s plan for Israel and the world in which her son would have a significant part. The visit itself flowed into her deep gratitude to God for her own gift and into the mutual gratitude for sharing in one another’s gifts – another mark of courtesy.

Mary’s visit to Elizabeth concludes with a song of thanksgiving for the privilege that God had given her in asking her to be the mother of the Messiah. It also expressed a passionate hope for the world beyond her own. This hope, which reaches far beyond her own future and stretches to the transformed world in which the poor would be justly treated and God would rule, is also an expression of courtesy. Courtesy broadens and deepens our attention to the people and world around us.

As Belloc says in his introductory verse, courtesy is usually regarded as a domestic virtue. In Mary’s Visitation, however, it is shown to be far-reaching in its effects. Courtesy links us to other people in intimate ways. It blesses our close relationships and contributes to looking on our intimate blessings with gratitude. Our concern for others and our gratitude to them, however, spreads beyond our immediate world and makes us want to be part of God’s plan for our universe.

On May 13, 1981 Marks The 40th Anniversary of the Assassination attempt on St Pope John Paul II. The following year, the Holy Father traveled to Fatima to thank the Virgin Mary for saving his life and had a bullet recovered from the popemobile placed in Our Lady of Fatima’s crown. The blood-stained cassock he wore that day is preserved in Krakow, Poland. St Johnpaul the II, Pray Us, Especially Our Beloved Country Nigeria!!!
