Text: Proverbs 16:9
โA man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.โ
(KJV)
Introduction
One of the greatest realities of life is that human beings love to plan. We plan our education, careers, marriages, ministries, businesses, and future ambitions. Planning itself is not wrong. In fact, wisdom teaches preparation and diligence. Yet many people become frustrated because life does not always go according to their plans.
There are moments when doors we expected to open suddenly close. There are journeys we started with confidence that ended differently than we imagined. There are people who carefully designed their future, only to discover that God had another direction entirely.
Proverbs 16:9 reveals a powerful truth: man may plan, but God has the final direction.
Human plans are limited by knowledge, but God sees the end from the beginning.
1. It Is Natural for Man to Plan
God created man with the ability to think, organise, and prepare.
Noah planned the ark.
Joseph planned for famine.
Nehemiah planned the rebuilding of Jerusalem.
Planning is not unbelief. Carelessness is not spirituality.
Many people misuse this verse to avoid responsibility. They say, โGod will do everything,โ while refusing to prepare themselves. But Scripture encourages wisdom and preparation.
A student must study.
A preacher must prepare.
A worker must labour diligently.
However, the danger comes when man becomes so confident in his plans that he excludes God.
James 4:13 to 15
โ...ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city... Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow... For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will...โ
The problem is not planning without effort. The problem is planning without surrender.
2. Godโs Direction Is Superior to Human Intention
Many times what appears good to us is not Godโs best for us.
A man may choose a path because it looks profitable, comfortable, or popular, while God sees danger ahead.
Isaiah 55:8 to 9
โFor my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.โ
God directs because He knows:
What we do not know
What is ahead of us
Who is genuine around us
Which doors are traps
Which delays are actually protection
Sometimes rejection is divine redirection.
Many believers cry because certain plans failed, not knowing God prevented a greater disaster.
Joseph planned a normal life, but God directed him to Egypt for preservation.
Moses planned to help Israel through human strength, but God redirected him through the wilderness.
Paul planned to preach in Asia, but the Spirit redirected him to Macedonia.
Godโs direction may confuse the flesh, but it never confuses Heaven.
3. God Directs Through Different Means
A. Through His Word
The Word of God provides guidance and correction.
Psalm 119:105
โThy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.โ
Many believers seek direction while ignoring Scripture.
God will never direct you contrary to His Word.
B. Through the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit gives inner conviction, warnings, and peace.
There are times you cannot explain why you lost interest in something you once desired. Sometimes it is the Spirit redirecting your steps.
Romans 8:14
โFor as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.โ
C. Through Circumstances
At times God closes doors no man can open.
Some delays, disappointments, and interruptions are divine instructions.
What you call setback may actually be Heavenโs protection.
D. Through Godly Counsel
God can use spiritually mature people to guide us.
Pride makes people reject counsel and walk into avoidable errors.
4. Godโs Direction Does Not Always Match Human Comfort
One reason many people struggle with divine direction is because God often leads beyond comfort zones.
Abraham was directed to leave his fatherโs house.
Peter was directed to step out of the boat.
Jonah resisted Godโs direction because it opposed his personal desire.
Sometimes God will direct you into:
unfamiliar places
difficult seasons
hidden preparation
waiting periods
But wherever God leads, His grace sustains.
The safest place in life is not comfort. It is obedience.
5. When God Redirects You, Do Not Fight Him
Many frustrations in life come from resisting divine direction.
Balaam resisted God and almost lost his life.
Jonah resisted God and entered a storm.
There are believers today exhausted because they are forcing doors God already closed.
Not every opportunity is divine.
Not every open door is from God.
A closed door from God is better than an open door without Him.
6. Trusting God When You Do Not Understand
One of the hardest tests of faith is when God changes your direction without giving full explanation.
Sometimes God only reveals the next step, not the full journey.
Proverbs 3:5 to 6
โTrust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.โ
Faith is trusting God even when His direction does not make immediate sense.
God may not explain everything, but He never leads wrongly.
Practical Lessons
Make plans, but surrender them to God.
Pray before major decisions.
Do not idolise your ambitions.
Be sensitive to divine correction.
Learn to accept Godโs interruptions.
Trust God when life changes unexpectedly.
Conclusion
Man plans, but God directs.
The greatest tragedy in life is not failed human plans. The greatest tragedy is succeeding outside the will of God.
Many people achieved their dreams and still lost peace, purpose, and destiny.
Godโs direction may sometimes seem slower, harder, or confusing, but His way always leads to purpose.
When God directs your steps:
delays become preparation
closed doors become protection
detours become divine appointments
The prayer of every believer should not merely be: โLord, bless my plans.โ
It should be: โLord, direct my steps.โ
Altar Call
Perhaps you have been running your life by your own wisdom. You have made decisions without consulting God, and now confusion, frustration, and emptiness surround you.
Today God is calling you to surrender.
Jesus Christ is the only secure guide for destiny. When He leads, He saves, preserves, and establishes.
Surrender your heart to Him today.
Prayer Points:
1. Lord, help me to surrender my plans to Your will.
2. Father, direct my steps and keep me from destructive paths.
3. Lord, give me sensitivity to hear Your voice clearly.
4. Every plan outside Godโs will for my life, let it be overturned.
5. Father, teach me to trust You even when I do not understand Your direction.
6. Lord, let my life fulfil Your purpose and not merely my ambition.
