Muhammad bin Yūsuf, [may Allāh have mercy on him], said:

“Sufyān ath-Thawri [may Allāh have mercy on him] would make us stand up to pray at night, and he would say:

‘Stand up, O’ young people, [continue to] pray throughout the years of your youth.’”

TN: The meaning of the above statement is so the youth will become accustomed to worshipping Allāh in their old age.

AbdAllāh ibn Mas’ūd رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ said: ‘Train yourself upon goodness, for verily goodness is only in that which is habitual.’ [Musannaf ibn Abi Shaybah]

تعصي الإله وأنت تزعم حبه * هذا لعمري في القياس شنيع

_You disobey the Ilāh (Allāh) and you claim to love Him * This to me is an outrageous measurement (of love)._

لو كان حبك صادقا لأطعته * إن المحب لمن يحب مطيع

_If your love was truthful then you would have obeyed Him * Indeed the lover is to his Beloved obedient."

Ibn al-Jawzi mentions a proverb of the ancients:

وذكر الحكماء في أمثالهم قالوا :
قيل للذئب ما بالك تعدو أسرع من الكلب
فقال لأني أعدو لنفسي والكلب يعدو لصاحبه.

A wolf was asked: "How is it that you can run faster than a dog?"
The wolf said: "Because I run for my own sake, and the dog runs for the sake of its owner."

["Kitab al-Adhkiyaa", 1/115].

Meaning: If you do something for yourself, you will do it better. Nobody will do your work for you with the same level of dedication as you would.
