Speaking In The Spirit

READ 1 Cor. 12:1-9

'Now, dear brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this. You know that when you were still pagans, you were led astray and swept along in worshiping speechless idols. So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit. ' (1 Corinthians 12:1-3)

There are several aspects to our texts today but we want to concentrate on the part that will help us understand speaking in tongues.

Questions were being asked about the use of speaking in tongues. The Apostle Paul sent letters to clarify the matter.
Let us point out some of the things he said:

Speaking in tongues is for personal edification or uplifting. (1 Cor. 14:4)
We should not fear what is being spoken because the one speaking is speaking unto God and glorifying God. ( 1 Cor. 12:3; John 16:14,15, Acts 2: 7- 11)
Speaking in tongues is also revealed to us as praying in the Spirit. (1 Cor. 14:14-15)
We do not give public messages in other tongues unless there is an interpreter. The essence of a message is that it is understood. (1 Cor. 14:19)
The Spirit of God is assisting the one praying in tongues to pray out the direct will of God. (Rom. 8:26-27)
The person praying in tongues does not need to understand what he is saying. He is through the Spirit of God, speaking mysteries in the spirit. (1 Cor. 14:2;14)

One more added note: 'This is how we know if they have the Spirit of God: If a person claiming to be a prophet acknowledges that Jesus Christ came in a real body, that person has the Spirit of God. But if someone claims to be a prophet and does not acknowledge the truth about Jesus, that person is not from God. Such a person has the spirit of the Antichrist, which you heard is coming into the world and indeed is already here. ' (1 John 4:2-3 NLT)
Those who say, “it is not possible that Jesus is God manifest in the flesh” are not speaking by the Spirit of God but rather through the Spirit of the Anti-Christ.

Jesus Christ is God manifest in the flesh, who came to dwell among us. - Emmanuel.

Paul acknowledges that He speaks in tongues. (1 Cor. 14:18)

I pray you grow up and are able to pray in tongues and in your understanding in Jesus’ name.

Testimony of His Grace

READ Psalm 66:16-20

“Praise God, who did not ignore my prayer or withdraw his unfailing love from me.”
(Psalms 66:20 NLT)
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit. (Psalms 32:2 NKJV)

One never ceases to be amazed by the magnanimity of the Almighty God. His grace is beyond comprehension. It is a matter of great joy that we are recipients of this amazing GRACE.
Our text today is a testimony; a celebration that prayers were both heard and answered by God. If one does not read the text properly, it will sound as though the prayers were heard principally because the author had not regarded iniquity in his heart (Psalm 66:18), but somewhere in the Psalms, it was acknowledged that we can stand only because God almighty in His mercy decided not to MARK iniquity:“If You, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with You, That You may be feared.” (Psalms 130:3‭-‬4 NKJV)

This truth is also quietly acknowledged in verse 20 of our text when it was pointed out that God did not “withdraw His unfailing love from me” (Psalm 66:20)
Our text shows how God forgives and showers grace upon those who love Him. God has blessed them because their iniquity is NOT imputed unto them. The concept of elective grace is not new at all. It has always been the way of God. Take this for example, it is what God said to Nathan the Prophet about Solomon before he began to reign :
“He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.” (II Samuel 7:13‭-‬16 NKJV)

Having read that, the revelation of Apostle Paul about believers(chosen ones) falls naturally into place; “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.”
(Romans 8:28‭-‬30 NKJV)

We further read : Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. (Romans 8:33‭-‬34 NKJV)

The called are fortunate, they are blessed, they are accepted before God and the iniquities are removed as far as the east is from the west. What a testimony of grace! What a loving Father God is!
Your sins are totally forgiven in Christ, God will therefore pay attention to your Prayers in Jesus’ name!

The Purpose of The Spirit

READ 1 Cor. 2

“And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.” (1 Corinthians 2:12 NLT)
“But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.”
(John 14:26 NLT)

Our text today is a portion of scripture where the earthly wisdom (wisdom of man or natural wisdom) has been distinguished broadly from the WISDOM of God. The Prophet Isaiah had several years earlier told us that; “For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:9 NLT), yet over and again humans will want to force all that God is into their frame of thought and highly flawed and limited wisdom.

The Apostle tells us here that it was not possible for the human mind to know what God had prepared for those who love Him(1 Cor. 2:9) but he quickly adds that that revelation has however been made because of the indwelling Presence of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 2:10) expounding further, he reminds us that only the Spirit of God can know the mind of God. This is the purpose for which the Lord Jesus sent His Spirit to keep staying alongside with everyone who believes. (1 John 2:20, 27)

When therefore you see a person arguing about the existence of God, he is only exhibiting the limits of the wisdom of men which at the best only ends in the use of the five senses, processed only through the rational mind; Spiritual REALITIES always sound foolish to him(1 Cor. 2:14).
The Spirit is given so that through His help we who are filled with the Spirit can evaluate all things. This is the reason why those who are matured in the Lord quickly see through deceptive Spirits and are able to discern manipulators who masquerade as some mighty voice of God or power of God.
Those filled with the Holy Spirit cannot be carried to and fro by every wind of doctrine.(Eph. 4:12 -16)

The true members of the Body of Christ are Blessed by the presence of the Holy Spirit. Are you aware of Him?
Are you conscious of Him?
Do you gravitate only towards the wisdom of men or do you draw from the deep wells of the Spirit of God. May the Lord grant us grace to initiate deeper daily communion with the Holy Spirit in Jesus’ name!

It Is a Long Wait

READ Matthew 25:13

“Watch, therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming. (Matthew 25:13 NKJV)

“God is frequently described in the Old Testament as the Bridegroom, and Israel as the bride (Isaiah 54:4-5; 62:5; Jeremiah 2:2; Hosea 1-3)” - France
Bearing that in mind, it will be apt to see Jesus Christ as the coming bridegroom in the parable of the 10 virgins.

There were three stages to a Jewish wedding on that Day. The first was engagement - a formal agreement made by the fathers. The second was betrothal - the ceremony where mutual promises are made. The third was marriage - approximately one year later when the bridegroom came at an unexpected time for his bride. - David Guzik Commentaries of the New Testament.
Knowing this will help to explain the background of this parable and the often repeated statement of our Lord Jesus Christ likening His coming to a time no one will know.

The five virgins called “foolish” in this parable exhibited imprudence and thoughtlessness. Everyone knew the tradition, the bridegroom will come whenever he wishes in the night, why were they not prepared for the long wait? A similar thing is happening to a lot of believers today. The instruction is “Ocuppy till I come”. We are to stay put, standing like sentries. The day the Lord will come is not known. All those who want the Lord to meet them on site must carry extra oil. It is a lifetime wait but, this is certain: He that must come will come.

Several people have gone to buy and even sell. Sir, do you know if He will meet you on-site? Many have alternative wedding sites so that they can collect more freebies; will you make it back into the family house before the bridegroom arrives?

The lesson is clear. Be Ready, always READY. Do not let the world distract you. Do not ask, what about those who are not in Christ? Do not be misled by saying, O!There are others in other religions. When that day and moment happens to mankind, just be sure, you are met right where you are supposed to be, ready to join the procession of the Bridegroom, who will certainly come because all earlier agreements and formalities have been completed.

‘Therefore, you also must be ready, be ready for the coming of the LORD”. If you believe, great! If you don’t, it changes nothing. The one who created the world without your input will still do whatever He wants with the world; without you.

The BEST and only favourable option are to receive Jesus Christ as Your Lord and Saviour, then stay PUT till He comes.
May you receive the GRACE not to slumber at critical times in Jesus’ name!

When Humility Saved A Nation

READ Jonah 3:5-10

'When God saw what they had done and how they had put a stop to their evil ways, he changed his mind and did not carry out the destruction he had threatened.'( Jonah 3:10)

Humility is defined as “freedom from pride or arrogance; the quality or state of being humble. Some of its antonyms (opposite) will give us a clearer picture of what it is. They include arrogance, pomposity, egotism, and top loftiness.
The Bible says, 'Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty, And before honor is humility.' (Proverbs 18:12) This implies strongly that humility saves from destruction. This is the case in our chosen text of consideration today. The City of Nineveh and her king humbled themselves before the great I AM.

The Bible describes Nineveh as a great city. (Jonah 3:2); Great Cities are often governed by a great King.

The Bible said as soon as Jonah entered the city and started preaching and warning about the anger of the Lord and the impending judgement upon Nineveh, the people believed God, proclaimed a fast; and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least of them. The habitants of this great city were humble before the WORD of God and sought reconciliation with God through repentance. When their king heard about it, he joined and proclaimed the fast throughout the land for three days.

It takes humility to accept the WORD of God and to obey it. It takes great humility and wisdom for a King to listen to a Prophet who serves “another god” which is not one of the gods of his land. This very act saved the King and her people.

Dearly beloved, humility can bring us salvation. When was the last time you acknowledged your errors? When was the last time you accepted the need to learn a new thing? The King of Nineveh humbled himself and saved his people and their land from the wrath of God.
But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.”(James 4:6 NKJV)

I pray we learn from them and through humility achieve longer lives in Jesus’ name.

God Gives A New Song

Read: Psalms 40:1-3

And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD. (Psalms 40:3)

One of the timeless truths about God is that He is a prayer answering God. The Bible says; “And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee”. (Psalms 9:10) If we make up our minds to seek the Lord, our testimonies are certain to come in due season.

God will bring about a change in our situation.
David describes his personal experience as being brought out of a horrible pit. He paints the picture of His deliverance: “He set my feet upon a rock and established my goings”

He rounded off by telling us how God changed his song from songs of fear, sorrow, and hopelessness to a New song; a song that is a praise to our God. The magnitude of his transformation and restoration was such that many heard and FEARED. They feared the WONDER WORKING POWER of God. The POWER that turns things around positively and gives a NEW SONG.

In this new season, it is your turn to experience a turnaround and receive a new song. I pray you are lifted out of the miry clay, with no more sinking experiences but a solid firm stand in Jesus' name!!

Revive us Again

Read: Psalms 85:1-8

What does it mean to experience a REVIVAL?
An improvement in the condition, strength, or fortunes of someone or something. Also, an instant of something becoming popular, active, or important. A re-awakening of or something coming back to health.
From the biblical position, it is a return, recall, or recovery of life from death or apparent death: just as the revival of a drowned person, an awakening of men to the consciousness of God and their relationship with me.
The root of the word is Latin from re and vivo to live. It could imply “to recover new life or vigor; to be reanimated after depression.
This was what the Psalmist referred to in our text as he prayed, “Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee? (Psalms 85:6). When dead, unconscious people come alive, there is normally a spontaneous joy. When a depressed, frustrated person revives, there is often joy. So, the Psalmist prayed that God would forgive the people's iniquity and bring about revival so that joy would return to the land. There is a connection between revival and joy! Think of your bank account being moribund for a period and a payment comes in with a fairly sizeable amount. There is often relief and then joy!! That is revival!!

The people of Nineveh were in great darkness. Wickedness reigned in the land and the cry against it came to God. People don’t succeed in a land that God’s anger is upon. God sent a Prophet named Jonah to declare their impending doom to them. The king led them in the process of repentance, with the who city acknowledging, confessing, and repenting of their sins. (read Jonah 3)

There are major components that spark a spiritual revival.
1. There has to be a realization. If people do not realize that they are on the wrong path and thus attract the wrath of God, the chances are that they may never come to the place of repentance.
2. Most times, it is provoked by the Word of God. (Rom. 10:13, 14) So, the people must believe the word of God.
3. A return to God in true repentance. When a person or a people is willing to acknowledge and confess their sins; God promises to forgive (Isaiah 1:18)
4. Then, the turnaround will begin. (Jonah 3:10, Isaiah 1:19, Psalms 85:8).
When we honestly do these, the presence of the Lord God returns to us and brings renewal, raises us from languor, heals our depression and discouragements, and returns courage and hope.

O, Lord, show us your mercy as a people. Have mercy on me as an individual as I acknowledge my failings and fall before you. Grant me your salvation, and let your face shine on me again, in Jesus’ name!! Save us as a people, and REVIVE us again!!
In this season; as you openly approach the Lord, you will experience a turnaround!!

Blow The Trumpet In Zion

READ Joel 2

Trumpets in the land of Israel and Judah were not just used for the worship of God by the Priests and Levites, it was also held by City Watchmen, who used it to blow a distinct sound or alarm in times of impending danger or preparation for WAR. (Ezek. 33:4)

God wanted to start a new thing in the midst of His people and the first thing He said to them is, ““Now, therefore,” says the Lord, “Turn to Me with all your heart, With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.” (Joel 2:12 NKJV); then He said, “So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the Lord your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm”. (Joel 2:13 NKJV)

It implies that for God to do a new thing within any given people, the people must come to the point of general realisation that they have missed it with God and need to make amends. The repentance must be genuine from the inner man not the outward man - Rend your Hearts, not your Garments!

Blow the Trumpet in Zion (Jerusalem, the headquarters of God on earth). Why in Zion? God needs the entire nation to be involved. He tells the Priests to lead the WAY. "Let the priests, who minister to the Lord, Weep between the porch and the altar; Let them say, “Spare Your people, O Lord, And do not give Your heritage to reproach, That the nations should rule over them. Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’ ”
(Joel 2:17 NKJV)

When we read down the chapter, we see the beautiful outcome. Things will change. There follows a restoration of all things and an outpouring of grace! God will pour out His Spirit on all flesh! He will send grain and wine! He will remove the nation from the control of the oppressors! This is possible when the Priests lead the way in repentance, intercession and genuine change of heart.

You will notice that God did not tell the King to lead the way. Politicians hardly have time for any genuine relationship with God! They rather, most times imagine themselves to be God and often usurp the role of God in the lives of the people, negatively!

In a nation therefore where the priests are looking up to the rulers for spiritual direction, everyone will be stuck in the mud of idolatry, human worship and eventual slavery to the forces that ruin lands and nations!

Dearly, beloved, called to be Priests unto the Lord, the land mourns because, we have abdicated out rightful places and reneged on our roles! Let us pick up the trumpet and blow, danger looms! The time is now! Now, before they ask us in mockery “where is your God!

I pray that we all Arise and take our place as the Watchmen of the City and help to avert a future danger in Jesus’ name!

The Jesus Way

READ Matthew 9:9-13

'When Jesus heard this, he said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do.” Then he added, “Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” '( Matthew 9:12-13 NLT)

When was the last time you reached out to those who have not yet accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour with a bid to bring them to the knowledge of God through Jesus Christ?

From the time you gave your life to Jesus Christ till now, when did you revisit your former group of friends to share your new experience?

Jesus Christ, while He was on earth, reached out to those who were not yet aware of the good news. He mixed up with those the Jews classified as SINNERS in other to show them that God loves and would accept them if they could come to Him.

The evidence of one of such outreach is the conversion of Matthew(Levi) from a tax collector to a disciple. Tax collectors were viewed as betrayers of the Jewish nation. They saw them as collaborators with the Romans and so dubbed them SINNERS. Jesus not only called Matthew to follow Him, but he also visited His home and partied with his friends. Jesus Christ deliberately went to where the sinners were (Luke 15:1,2; 19:1-7).

When will you reach out to those who are known not to care about God and the matter of their soul? Jesus went to them. He went to them. He was intentional about it.
'And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. ' (Acts of the Apostles 10:38 NLT) Look up John 4:7-10; John 5:1-6.

Time to go the Jesus Way and reach the unreached. The harvest fields are ripe and ready. Put in the sickle now!
Let us reach out to the world and spread the Gospel. just as Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Rejection Of The Healer

READ Matthew 8:28-34

“Then the entire town came out to meet Jesus, but they begged him to go away and leave them alone”.(Matt. 8:34 NLT)

Matthew Chapter 8 contains the accounts of at least five notable miracles. Three were about healing; One was about the Lord’s power over nature and averse conditions. The last miracle documented in the chapter was about the deliverance of two demon-possessed men in the country of the Gadarenes.

Something of interest caught my attention. I am so excited about the miracles (by the way) because it shows that our Lord Jesus Christ (The living WORD of God) can heal from a distance and nearby.

We read of the terrible condition these possessed men were in. We see how helpless they were. Here comes Jesus Christ and on the spot and by themselves, the demons in them begin to tremble, knowing that the humble man of Nazareth was God in the form of a man. They concluded that he walked down there to pronounce the great judgement that all demons in hell continue to dread. They know there is a set time for their judgement. They know it is certain and they know the one before them has the power to judge them and bring judgement upon them.

The demons, of their own volition, chose to enter the herd of pigs. Was that their former abode? Did the state of the sick men have anything to do with pigs? (the Jews consider them unclean). Well, Jesus Christ obliged them. The presence of the demons in the pigs drove the whole herd to su***de. They all rushed into the water and died!

The news of the deliverance of the possessed men and the demise of the herd of pigs was taken to the nearby villages by the terrified shepherds of those pigs.

Instead of the men of the city rejoicing for the deliverance of the two insane men, they were angry at Jesus Christ for the loss of their herd of pigs. This says a lot!
As we read the various comments against Christianity, her antagonists have not denied that there are benefits to being a Christian but are worried about the evil merchandise they are likely to lose in following Christ.

So, instead of night crawlers giving up their abusive lifestyles, nightclub owners will sponsor the attacks on Christianity. Those making money from unclean businesses will sponsor all kinds of attacks against Christianity. The people, leaders and elders of the Samaritan villages spoken of in John 3:16 are far wiser than these men. They told Jesus to ABIDE in their town for a while.

The ones in our story today drove Jesus out!
Their opportunity to get many more healed, feed some hungry souls and bring many to eternity was lost!

I pray for you that you will not miss your season of Divine Visitation. I pray you will recognise your seasons of lifting and of Salvation. May the Lord open your eyes to see things meant for your good in Jesus’ name!
