GIVE THANKS TO GOD

TEXT: PSALM 118:1-9

MEMORY VERSE: "O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever" (PSALM 118:1).

In a tale, Androcles, a slave who escaped from his captors, found himself in a bush with a lion in severe pains due to a large thorn that stuck to its paws. Androcles helped the lion to remove the thorn from its paws.

Later, when both of them were captured, and Androcles was sentenced to be "thrown to the lion," it licked Androcles' hand in appreciation of the man who saved it from death, instead of pouncing on him.Unlike this lion who was able to reflect and thank the slave for saving it earlier, not many youths are thankful to God for the gift of life, divine salvation, protection and provision.

God gave His only begotten Son to save mankind from eternal damnation. Jesus paid the ultimate price for us, and the only thing we can give in return is thanks.

No matter our challenges, every day of our lives presents renewed opportunity for us to express our gratitude to God. Make praising God a habit!

QUOTE: Make praising God a habit!

CHALLENGE: Appreciate God for who He is.

PRAYER: Lord, teach me how to be thankful to You.

DIVINE ARMAMENTS

TEXT: JUDGES 15:1-8

KEY VERSE: "And he smote them hip and thigh with a great slaughter: and he went down and dwelt in the top of the rock Etam" (JUDGES 15:8).

Some people are so presumptuous that they think they can second-guess God, especially as it has to do with His punishment for sin. They minimise the sinfulness of sin and the consequent judgment. Sometimes, this is done in the vain hope that God will dance to their tune.

God allowed the Philistines to oppress and rule over Israel for failing to drive them out of Canaan. This continued until God, in His mercy, started sending judges to lead and deliver them. One of them was Samson who was endowed with supernatural strength. The divinely orchestrated way used here by Samson in prosecuting war against the Philistines may look strange to the casual observer but "the wisdom and knowledge of God... and his ways [are] past finding out!" (Romans 11:33). When Samson told his parents he wanted to get married to a woman of the Philistines, they had no idea that "it was of the LORD, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines" (Judges 14:4).

After contracting the marriage, Samson was separated for a while from his wife following a disagreement. When he returned months later, he was told his father-in-law had given his wife to another man, the so-called friend who had helped Samson arrange the marriage. This became an occasion for God to vent His judgment on the Philistines. He roused Samson who destroyed the Philistines "with a great slaughter".

While Christians are not associated with and do not advocate violence, it should be noted that God's judgment against evildoers is real. Although it may be slow in coming but certainly, it will come!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God has more armaments in His arsenal than all the weapons in the world.

FALLEN? DO NOT STAY DOWN

TEXT: MARK 14:66-72

MEMORY VERSE: "For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief" (PROVERBS 24:16).

Life is a struggle. It throws curveballs at you, humbles you and attempts to break you down. Many fail at this point. Few bounce back on their feet and stand strong, while others remain fallen. Apostle Peter was confronted with such a situation in his life time - he betrayed our Lord Jesus Christ as foretold and fell. Did he stay down? No!

Many students are faced with academic and spiritual situations that tests their stand and faith. Some do rise above these problems and become conquerors; others fail to rise above sins and Satan's strategies, and remain down. Peter fell, but he did not stay down. He realised his mistake, repented and rose to continue with his Christian journey and made remarkable progress and exploits thereafter.

If you have fallen or backslidden, bounce back like Peter, and the Lord will receive you in Jesus' name. Sin brings downfall, but repentance brings divine forgiveness and uplift. It is hard to beat a person that never gives up. Put your trust in the Lord, rely completely on His promises, and abide continually in Him.

QUOTE: He did not stay down.

CHALLENGE: Stay strong in the Lord.

PRAYER: Lord, hold my hands lest I fall.

FUTILE SHORTCUTS

TEXT: 1 KINGS 15:16-24

KEY VERSE: "Then Asa took all the silver and the gold that were left in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king’s house, and delivered them into the hand of his servants: and king Asa sent them to Ben-hadad, the son of Tabrimon, the son of Hezion, king of Syria, that dwelt at Damascus..." (1 KINGS 15:18).

Many people are quick to take the easy way out. They seek shortcuts to finding a solution to an enduring problem. For a while, it may seem to be working. Soon enough, they realise that greater problems have been created.

Asa, king of Judah, sought futile shortcuts. Although he started well, for "he did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, as did David his father", success for him came at a great price. Baasha, the king of Israel, waged war against him, and seized part of his territory. When Asa realised he could not dislodge Baasha, he turned to the wrong source for help. He gathered all the treasures in the house of the Lord and delivered them to Benhadad, king of Syria, with the plea that he should break his alliance with Baasha. It worked, because the king of Syria attacked Israeli cities, forcing the king of Israel to withdraw from Judah.

From then on, however, Asa's life took a downward plunge. His rebellion soon brought a strange disease upon him. Yet, in his sickness, he refused to turn to God. Instead, he kept hopping from one physician to the other, all to no avail. Soon, he died from that sickness; a pitiable end of a king that began his reign by doing right in the sight of God.

We must avoid taking the easy way out. It may appear simple and straightforward but it does not last. Worse still, it has the tendency to turn the heart from God, to make us self-conceited, and to think that we can solve our own problems. Resist the pressure to seek shortcuts in dealing with life challenges. Instead, let your dependence rest on the Almighty.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Shortcuts often lead to damning problems.

THE DESTINY OF DECEIVERS

TEXT: PSALM 101:1-8

MEMORY VERSE: "He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight" (PSALM 101:7).

The danger of being associates of deceivers is that deceivers do not bear the consequences of their deeds alone; the deceived share in their pains and judgments. Such was the case of the Israelites when they fell for Absalom's deception.

Our text clearly states God's displeasure against deceivers. The implication of their actions, among others, is expulsion from God's presence and care. Many youths are being deceived by false prophets and teachers who teach false doctrine of eternal security without holiness. Such deceivers can draw much crowd to themselves, yet they are abominable before God.

Christian youths should increase their voices of holiness through their impeccable lives. An American poet, Criss Jami, admonishes that, "One who speaks a mere portion of truth to deceive is a craftsman of destruction."

Therefore, you should avoid being deceived because that will damn your soul. You must also withdraw your allegiance and support of any kind from preachers of errors who are in our schools and neighbourhood to deceive people. Come out of deceit today.

QUOTE: The deceived share in their pains.

CHALLENGE: Stay away from deceivers.

PRAYER: Lord, give me the courage to stand for the truth.

GOD FULFILS HIS PROMISES

TEXT: EXODUS 6:1-13

KEY VERSE: "Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bo***ge, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments" (EXODUS 6:6).

Often times, our predicaments seem insurmountable. With every passing day, the suffering becomes difficult to bear. We might even get to the point when we begin to assume that the Lord has forgotten us; that we are alone, desolate and inconsolable. But God will never forget to overlook the challenges of His children.

Moses and Aaron had gone to Pharaoh, king of Egypt, with the message from God to free the Israelites from bo***ge. Instead of heeding their demand, he ordered the doubling of their hard labour. Moses was discouraged, but God was only just beginning the process by which He would deliver the Israelites. He reassured Moses of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and introduced Himself by the new name of Jehovah. He informed him that He was concerned with the plight of the Israelites, and said He would bring them out of slavery in Egypt as He had promised.

When Moses spoke to the Israelites, they refused to listen to him because of their "anguish of spirit, and... cruel bo***ge". Moses too was reluctant to go back to Pharaoh with God's message. But God insisted that he should return to the Israelites and Pharaoh with His message of freedom.

Irrespective of the severity of your condition, God is aware of it. It may appear as if the forces against you are too powerful to dislodge or your condition seems too hopeless. Yet God will not leave or forsake His children. He remembers His covenant with them. And just when they think all hope is lost, He arrives in His mighty power to roll away all their problems.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Cheer up, God will not leave or forsake you.

DO NOT QUIT!

TEXT: EXODUS 5:15-23

KEY VERSE: "And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Lord, wherefore hast thou so evil entreated this people? why is it that thou hast sent me?" (EXODUS 5:22).

In Napoleon Hill's classic, _Think and Grow Rich,_ a man called R. U. Darby was caught in a gold rush. After discovering a field with the prospects of gold, he put some money together from friends and relatives to purchase the equipment to dig. But after many days of labour and finding nothing, they decided to quit. They sold the equipment to a junk man for a few hundred dollars and went back home. The junk man called in a mining engineer who examined the field and concluded that gold was available just three feet from where the Darbys had stopped. The junk man took millions of dollars from the ore of the mine because he knew enough to seek expert advice before giving up.

Moses and the people of Israel almost lost faith in God's plan to liberate them from Egypt's bo***ge. A series of back-to-back misfortunes resulted in their being discouraged.

Like srael and Moses, some could be wondering right now if they are still in God's will due to their present situation. They ask, 'Can we be in the will of God and be experiencing setbacks?' Some people have left their spouses and family, changed churches or abandoned their God-ordained profession because of temporal adversities.

We sometimes encounter challenges, discouraging circumstances and even failure on our way to success. The devil fights against God's will, forcing many to quit just when victory is near. We must trust God more when things are not working well because He is too faithful to disappoint us.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Those who quit do not win.

FROM SINKING TO SINGING

TEXT: PSALM 13:1-6

KEY VERSE: "I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me" (PSALM 13:6).

The Duke of Wellington, the British military leader who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo, was not an easy man to serve. He was not one to shower his subordinates with compliments. Yet even Wellington realised that his methods left something to be desired. In his old age, a young lady asked him what he would do differently if he had his life to live all over again. Wellington thought for a moment and then replied, "I'd give more praise".

The psalmist was in deep sorrow for a number of reasons. At a point, he believed he was forsaken by God and thought God was not concerned about him anymore. He equally complained about his enemies being exalted over him. After a while, he was finally able to see the brightness of tomorrow through the clouds of today. His heart rejoiced and he soon began to sing and give praise to God.

Obviously, David had had a fair share of troubles during his lifetime. The unprovoked jealousy from King Saul that greeted his killing of Goliath to free Israel from reproach was one concern. His consequent isolation in the wilderness and caves occasioned by the persecutions he faced, was another. But through all these, David kept his faith and hope alive by singing songs of praise to the Lord.

Singing and giving praise to God can be very helpful when dealing with adverse situations in life. It gives us joy and helps us retain our faith in times of our greatest worries and fears. No matter the adversity we face, we need to understand that it has a lifespan. As Wellington wished, we should switch from lamenting to singing and praising God.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Praising God opens new and brighter chapters.
