The Law of Love (2)

'Above all, clothe yourselves with love...' Colossians 3:14 NLT
God's love is the most powerful force the world has ever seen. And as a follower of Christ, it is up to
you to carry the torch and keep it burning. The Bible says, '...Clothe yourselves with tender-hearted
mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience... Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds
us all together in perfect harmony.' (Colossians 3:12-14 NLT) It's one thing to quote Scriptures, pray
long articulate prayers in public, study theology and attend church. But only when people see your love
will they be impacted by your life. Love, not words, is the true test of your discipleship. It's said that
General Omar Bradley once made a business trip on a commercial airline wearing a regular suit instead of
his military uniform. When he reached his seat, he started doing some paperwork. As it turned out, the
man sitting next to him was a young army private who didn't recognise Bradley. So, after take-off, he
turned to the general and said, 'Since we're going to be together for a while, it would be nice if we got
to know each other. My guess is that you're a banker.' Not wishing to seem rude, but needing to finish
his work, Bradley replied, 'No, I'm General Omar Bradley, a five-star general in the US Army. I head up
the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon in Washington, DC.' Without missing a beat, the young private
replied, 'Well, sir, that's a very important job, and I sure hope you don't blow it!' Your most important
job today is to show God's love - so don't blow it!

The Law of Love (1)

'A new command I give you: Love one another.' John
13:34 NIV
A newspaper told the story of a boy with cancer who was
going through chemotherapy and losing his hair. To show
their love and support, his classmates all shaved their
heads so he wouldn't be embarrassed about returning to
school. The newspaper carried a picture of them all with
their bald heads, accompanied by the caption, 'Everything
we do, we do together.' That's the 'law of love' Jesus
was talking about when He said, 'A new command I give
you: Love one another.' This must have sounded radical
to the people Jesus was addressing, for they lived by two
Old Testament laws: (1) the law of revenge . Before Moses
came along, the law of the land was the law of the jungle.
It said in essence, 'If you hurt me I'll hurt you and then
hurt you even more!' Enemies actively sought ways to
settle old scores because revenge wasn't just acceptable,
it was encouraged. (2) the law of retribution. In Moses'
time, revenge was replaced with retribution, which allowed
'an eye for an eye', but no more (Leviticus 24:20). You
could do to your enemies only what they had done to you.
To us this sounds harsh, but back then it was major
progress. Then Jesus came along and introduced a third
law: the law of love. It meant you didn't have to get even;
you could choose to forgive. Indeed, if you didn't, your
prayers wouldn't be answered. This new commandment
demonstrates the unconditional love God shows to us -
then calls us to live the same way. So the law of love
should govern your life every day.

5 Tips for Avoiding Sin

Scripture: “but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed” James 1:14a

Being a Christian involves turning away from sin; however, we still mess up sometimes. We can learn to rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit to avoid sin. Here are five tips for avoiding sin:

1. Recognize Sin

What is sin? We sin when we don’t do something that we know is right to do. We also sin when we disobey God, or when we do something that is against what the Bible teaches us to do. Pray that God will reveal your sin so you can work with Him to stop sinning.

2. Focus on God’s Word

The Psalmist wrote that he hid God’s “Word in my heart, that I might not sin” (Psalm 119:11). Reading, memorizing, and meditating on God’s Word will help you keep your mind and heart focused on Him, rather than on earthly temptations.

3. Stay Far from Sin

Try to avoid situations and places where you may be tempted to sin. If you have a drinking problem, don’t go to bars. If you tend to look lustfully at women, don’t go to the beach. The brother of Jesus encouraged Believers to “resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). Remember, God can guide you away from temptation: “When you are tempted, God will show you a way out” (I Corinthians 10:13).

4. Find an Accountability Partner

After you have prayed to avoid sin, you might find God’s answer coming in the form of a friend who helps you. The Bible reminds us that just “as one piece of iron sharpens another, so friends keep each other sharp” (Proverbs 27:17). A person who helps us obey the Lord might be called an “accountability partner.” People who have recognized sins in their lives, such as giving in to the temptation of drugs and alcohol, often know that a friend who encourages godly living is very helpful.

5. Repent if You Sin

God knows that we make mistakes, even when we try our best to obey Him. But “God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against Him” (Daniel 9:9). Repent, then continue to try to obey Him, and to walk in His ways, so that you will not fall back into a sinful lifestyle. Learn how to repent if you don’t know how. God promised “that your sins may be wiped away” (Acts 3:19), when you repent and turn to Him.

God Hears Your Prayers

Look to Jesus

We learned earlier that God talks to us in the Bible. In prayer, you are talking with God. He knows you better and loves you more than any friend. He wants to spend time with you and hear from you.

God is more than a friend. He is the Lord Almighty. He is able to do things for you and knows the right way to help. To know what God is like, just look to Jesus (John 1:18).

When Jesus’ disciples asked Him to teach them how to pray, He gave a model prayer, often known as the “Our Father” or “The Lord’s Prayer” (Matthew 6:9-13). It is not a magic formula to be repeated over and over to gain His favor. Rather, it gives some keys for relating to Him. Let’s look at some of them:

It starts with worship

Our Father in Heaven, holy is Your name.

We should approach God with deep respect, knowing at the same time that He is our loving Father. We are called to love God with all that we are. We worship Him and declare that His name is holy. We pray that more and more people would see this.

We align ourselves with His will

Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven

God has a great plan for the world and for His people. We should find out how we fit into that plan. His plan for today includes something for us to do. And we ask Him to exercise His mighty power to make things right, here on earth. The more our prayers agree with His purpose, the more He delights in answering them.

We ask for the things we need

Give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

After we worship and accept His plan, we talk about our own needs. “Daily bread” means the basics: Food, clothing, and shelter; and we are aware every day that He is the one who provides.

When we say “Forgive us our debts,” we remember that He has graciously forgiven our sins -- a “debt” too large for us to ever pay back. Jesus lived a perfect life and shed His blood on the cross. He paid that debt forever. Because He lives in us now, we are able to forgive others. We can be set free from bitterness and broken relationships.

We ask for protection

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Though we are God’s children, we still tend to sin. So we ask Him, through the Holy Spirit, to guide us away from tempting situations. Also, we have an enemy, Satan, whose goal is to “steal, kill, and destroy” (John 10:10). We ask for protection from God who can help us no matter what we are going through.

Look to Jesus in Prayer

The more we spend time with God in prayer and in His word, the more we know Him and love Him. The more our hearts beat with His. The more like Jesus we become.
