The Vineyard is a worldwide movement of Churches with roots in both traditional evangelicalism and pentecostal renewal. Instead of the customary ‘charismatic’ label, however, Vineyard prefers empowered evangelicals. The first Vineyard churches were planted in California in the Seventies. Kenn Gulliksen, a softly-spoken, unassuming leader, started a church in Hollywood in 1974. In 1975, he gave it

the name ‘Vineyard’ based on Isaiah 27:2–3. By 1982, there were six or seven ‘Vineyards’ in a loose-knit fellowship of churches. In the early eighties, Kenn felt led to ask John Wimber to assume leadership of the emerging movement. The official recognition of this transition took place in 1982.
