Text: "But one thing is needful."
Luke 10:42

By C. H Spurgeon

WE HAVE no difficulty whatever in deciding what the one thing is. We are not allowed to say that it is the Saviour, for he is not a thing; and we are not permitted to say that it is attention to our own salvation, for although that would be true, it is not mentioned in the context. The one thing needful evidently is that which Mary chose-that good part which should not be taken away from her. Very clearly this was to sit at Jesus' feet and hear his word. This and nothing less, this and nothing more.

The mere posture of sitting down and listening to the Saviour's word was nothing in itself: it was that which it indicated. It indicated, in Mary's case, a readiness to believe what the Saviour taught, to accept and to obey-nay to delight in, the precepts which fell from his lips. And this is the one thing needful-absolutely needful; for no rebel can enter the kingdom of heaven with the weapons of rebellion in his hands. We cannot know Christ while we resist Christ: we must be reconciled to his gentle sway, and confess that he is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

To sit at Jesus' feet implies faith as well as submission. Mary believed in what Jesus said, and, therefore, sat there to be taught by him. It is absolutely necessary that we have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, in his power as God and man, in his death as being expiatory, in his crucifixion as being a sacrifice for our sins. We must trust him for time and eternity, in all his relationships as Prophet, Priest, and King. We must rely on him; he must be our hope, our salvation, our all in all. This one thing is absolutely necessary: without it we are undone. A believing submission, and a submissive faith in Jesus we must have, or perish.

But sitting at Jesus' feet implies, also, that having submitted and believed, we now desire to be his disciples. Discipleship is too often forgotten; it is as needful as faith. We are to go into all the world and disciple all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and of the Holy Ghost. A man cannot be saved unless he has become a learner in the school of Christ, and a learner, too, in a practical sense, being willing to practice what he learns. Only he who does the Master's will knows his doctrines. We are, if we have chosen the good part, sitters at the feet of Jesus, just as Saul of Tarsus sat at the feet of Gamaliel; Christ is to us our great Instructor, and we take the law from his lips. The believer's position is that of a pupil, and the Lord Jesus is his teacher. Except we be converted and become as little children, we can in no wise enter the kingdom of heaven. Sitting at the feet of Jesus indicates the child-like spirit of true discipleship; and this is the one thing needful: there is no salvation apart from it.

THE ALTAR THE PLACE OF TRUST.

Then Abram moved his tent, and went and dwelt by the terebinth trees of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built an altar there to the Lord. Genesis 13:18 NKJV

Read: Genesis 13 v 17 & 18

Abraham was a man who did not joke with any encounter he had with the Lord. He treasured each experience and to mark each encounter, he built an altar. This was a place to remind Him that at each place and moment God visited him and left his word with him. It became a place of signing contracts for times to come.

There was a dispute that occurred between Lot’s men and Abram’s men. It should have been a simple thing seeing that Abram was obviously Lot’s elder, but no! Abram stood from a point of peace and humility preferring Lot’s choice to be attended to rather than His. God,
also knowing that His promise to Abraham would need to be fulfilled, allowed Lot pick the humanly desirable place and Abraham was left alone. God came to him again and re-affirmed his promise. Sometimes when God's promise comes to us, we seem to involve people God has not particularly included to be part of such promise. God in His wisdom sends these “Lots” away from us so that He can re-affirm what He already said. The promise of Cannan being an inheritance to the sons of Abraham did not include Lot and so Lot needed to leave for God to come again.

There are some people or things in our lives that may be really special to us at the moment. If God isn’t in on it, He will take such things and people away from us even if it hurts, so that we can fulfill purpose. And when that moment of loneliness and heart break comes, He takes us back to the altar where He re-affirms His word. Letting us know that without those people or things in our lives we will still and rather be more effective to fulfill what He has said to us.

You must always remember that you are the only constant personality on your journey and if you must follow the right route at each moment, you must keep close to the altar, trusting God who has carved out this life for you, knowing that He alone knows what you need.

Prayer Burden:

Dear Lord, I am most times anxious of what the future holds, please help me keep close to the altar that I’1l not lose bearing for my life.

WHOSE VOICE DO YOU OBEY?

And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” John 10:4‭-‬5 NKJV

Read: John 10 v 27 - 30.

Have you ever watched a battalion of soldiers marching to war, or perhaps the police officers on duty, and how they have a communication phone with them.

Have you also noticed that there is a way their ears and heart are inclined as if waiting to hear something?

Have you also noticed that they usually have a commanding officer whose voice they are committed to following?

Like the battalion of soldiers so are we in the army of Christ and Jesus Christ our chief commanding officer. Of necessity our ears must be inclined to hear what he has to say less we miss His instructions
for us "the reason why we don't hear Him is that our ears have not been tuned to hear Him, we sometimes talk to Him without even expecting a response back, so even if He has a response for us, we miss it"

The most important voice as a soldier of Christ is that of the commanding officer; Jesus Christ. And in today's passage, Jesus does not expect us to follow the voice of a stranger. My sheep hear my voice and they follow me; John 10:5; And a stranger will they not follow but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.

A stranger's voice, they will not follow. For us to know the next step in everything we do, we must look out for the voice of our commander: not the voice of pain, disappointments, friends, colleagues, and the likes.

Prayer Burden:

Lord tune my ear to hear you, and help me to differentiate your voice from other voices calling for my attention

The most important voice that matters to me is that of the Lord Jesus Christ.
