DATE: MONDAY, AUGUST 1, 2016
READING: 1 Chronicles 29:10-20
TOPIC: GOD OWNS EVERYTHING

The most important biblical principle concerning money and possessions can be summarized thus: "God owns everything”. King David understood this, hence he declared: "Yours O LORD, is the greatness and the power ... for everything in heaven and on earth is Yours... Wealth and honour come from You. ... All of it belongs to You" (vs. 11, 12, 16). What God owns include:

1. Money: "The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine, says the Lord of hosts" (Haggai 2:8)

2. Possessions: "Every beast of the forest is Mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. The world is Mine, and all its fullness" (Psalm 50: 10, 12b).

3. Ability: "It is He who gives you power to get wealth" (Deut. 8:18).

4. Self: "Whether we live or die, we are the Lord's" (Romans 14:8)

5. Everything: "The earth is the Lord's, and all its fullness.

6. The world and those who dwell therein" (Psalm 24: 1)

"What do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it "? (1 Cor. 4: 7). Kindly give your life to Jesus today, be thankful like King David and avoid the greed/excess luggage of the "Rich fool" in Luke 12:17-20.

PRAYER: Help me Lord to always acknowledge that You are the owner of my life and everything that I have. Amen.

DATE: FRIDAY, JULY 22, 2016
READING: 2 Thessalonians 2: 13-17
TOPIC: REMAIN STEADFAST

One main objective of Satan in bringing afflictions and temptations or trials to God's people is first, to make them doubt the love of God and then to cause them to fall away from the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ. Be assured, however, that God will not allow His children to be tempted beyond their strength. (1 Cor. 10: 13). Apart from the trials and persecutions, which the Thessalonians Christians had passed through on account of their faith, there is no doubt that individuals amongst them had attacks from the "pit of hell" in various areas of their lives.

Paul's concern for all the Churches he planted was that they should remain steadfast in the faith that had been passed on to them. Apostle Peter also had this burden: that in view of the certain Second Coming of Jesus, Christians have a duty to maintain a strong testimony in a world that is fast preparing itself for final destruction. As Christians, we are aliens in this world and must live circumspectly in order not to misrepresent our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. This is how we must make our calling and election sure (2 Thess. 3:13-15; 2 Pet. 1:3-8).

PRAYER: May I Lord, remain steadfast until my life's end.

READING: 2 Thessalonians 1: 1-12
TOPIC: COMMENDATION

In today's passage, Paul writes words of encouragement to the Thessalonians Christians who were standing firm in their faith and growing strong in their love and unity, in the midst of persecution. He is proud of them for their patience and faith which have enabled them to grow and increasingly mature in difficult circumstances. This is a big challenge to us Christians today. In the current climate of the "bread-and-butter-gospel" preached today, a lot of professing Christians fall away when they are confronted with one form of hardship or the other.

Paul also commends them for their increasing love for one another. This manifest love and their patience and faith in the midst of persecution shows that they truly belong to God and are worthy of His Kingdom. He assures them that God will vindicate their faith and fight for them against their persecutors (vs. 5-10; Rom. 12: 14-20).Beloved, when this kind of situation arises in our lives, God is so pleased with us that He avenges our sufferings on those who persecute us and despise us. We do not need to raise a finger to fight our enemies since God is equal to the task. Our duty, however, is to continue to be faithful to Him, so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in and through us.

PRAYER: Lord, help us to show the glory of Christ in our fellowship.

READING: 1 Thessalonians 4: 1-12
TOPIC: IMMORALITY DISPLEASES GOD

One thing, which must mark out a genuine Christian, is a life of holiness. Every Christian must know that by virtue of the Atonement of Christ, he has become a citizen of Heaven (Phil. 3:20). His life is henceforth set apart for the use of the Lord. In this Chapter, Paul addressed three issues which affected the Church of the Thessalonians. They are immorality, love, and the Lord's second coming. Immorality, in all its definitions, is offensive to God.

It is possible that within the Church of the Thessalonians some cases of sexual immorality had been reported. Paul makes it clear that adulterers and fornicators sin against God and will not escape His judgment. Among other things, immorality gives the Church a bad name. The Lord told King David through the Prophet Nathan that by what he did, he gave the enemies of the Lord great opportunity to despise and blaspheme Him (2 Sam. 12: 14). We
are all representatives / ambassadors of Christ (2 Cor. 5: 17); therefore, when we sin and are exposed, we hurt the reputation of Christ and His Church. If you have received Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord but you are still struggling with the sin of immorality, or any others, call upon the Lord. He will help you.

MAKE THIS SONG YOUR PRAYER:

Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me
All His wondrous compassion and purity
O Thou Spirit Divine, all my nature refine,
Till the beauty of Jesus be seen in me.

DATE: TUESDAY, JULY 12, 2016
READING: 1 Thessalonians 1: 1-10
TOPIC: A MODEL CHURCH

In the opening verses of this Epistle, Paul says many positive things about the Thessalonians Church. In the introductory (vs. 1-4), we see a Church zealous in carrying on the work of the Lord. This was possible because the Church had faithful ministers - Paul, Silas and Timothy, the co-founders of the Church - who stayed in touch with them, and through their letters and visits, encouraged them through difficult times. Today, Churches and Christians in various parts of the world who are passing through difficult times - whether in the hands of the enemies of the cross, natural disasters or other forms of misfortune - are strengthened in their faith and determination to keep on "smiling at the storms of life", by your prayers, visits and works of encouragement.

Dear friend, in some parts of Nigeria (our immediate environment) there are fellow believers who are being slaughtered daily by various jihadist groups; whose homes, businesses and places of worship are being burnt down on account of their faith in Christ Jesus. What positive thing have you ever done to share in their suffering even as you remain in your "comfort zone”? Secondly, the Church in Thessalonica grew stronger because everybody was "carried along". It was the CHURCH OF THE THESSALONIANS - not just of a few influential people. Everybody's gift was recognized and so, they were all together stirred unto prayer and spreading of the Gospel message.

THOUGHT: Where and how is the Lord leading you to contribute to making your local Church a place where there is unity and where all members are committed to sharing their faith with outsiders? And what are you and your church doing to help suffering brethren both in your immediate environment and elsewhere?

TOPIC: ASHAMED OF SIN

When Ezra heard that the people of Israel who came back from exile had intermarried with unbelievers, he prayed: "I am too ashamed and disgraced, my God, to lift up my face to you, because our sins are higher than our heads and our guilt has reached to the heavens" (Ezra 9:6). This prayer states clearly that sin is shameful. Nowadays, when one considers how some Christians romance with sin without being ashamed, one wonders. Every true Christian should be ashamed of every act of sin.

The Spirit of God in every believer continues to witness to God's children, helping them to be sensitive to sin around them. They should live to hate sin and denounce it anywhere and everywhere. This is the point expressed in v. 31 of today's passage: "Then you will remember your evil ways, and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves for your iniquities and your abominations". Is this your attitude to sin? Anything short of shame, sorrow and repentance for sin is unacceptable to God. Remember that no one who does what is shameful will enter the heavenly Jerusalem (Rev. 21:27).

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank you for delivering me from the world of sin and shame. I will remain eternally grateful in Jesus name. Amen.

DATE: WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8, 2016
READING: 1 TIMOTHY 6: 1-16
TOPIC: KEEP AWAY FROM THE LOVE OF MONEY

Apostle Paul, in our passage today spoke plainly in identifying the love of money as a root of all evils (v. 10). Timothy was encouraged to flee the love of money and follow after righteousness, faith, godliness, love, patience, meekness and also fight a good fight of faith to lay hold on eternal life (v. 11-16). In itself, money is not evil; but the love of it and the pursuit of it as the most important' thing in our lives, is. Money is useful to meet daily personal needs and to carry out the work of the Gospel. It is also important to support other areas of the ministry of the Church, like welfare. However, Paul warns clearly against submitting our lives, loyalty and undivided attention to money. To do so would be to surrender our hearts and affection to it and this is idolatry. Remember, God is a jealous God (Exod. 20: 1ff).

Undivided loyalty to money will not only compromise our loyalty to, and love for God; it can become a window through which the devil puts our lives in bo***ge. Those who pursue money at all costs have been known to compromise their faith and the devil uses that desire to gain wealth to bring divisions in homes and assemblies. Betrayal, slander, hate, ritual killings and a host of other evils are the products of the love of money. Christians much be watchful against such pitfalls. The devil always looks for ways to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10a). You shall not be his victim, in Jesus name. Amen.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, give me grace to love You more than anything the devil can offer me. Help me to live my life to please and honour You, in Jesus mighty name. Amen.

DATE: TUESDAY, JUNE 7, 2016
READING: 1 TIMOTHY 5: 21-25
TOPIC: PRAY FOR THE CHURCH FATHERS TODAY

TEXT: "I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality. Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure. Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities. Some men's sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after. Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise cannot be hid." 1 TIMOTHY 5: 21-25 KJV

Praying for our Church leaders is an important and rewarding spiritual exercise, and Paul already asked Timothy to encourage prayers for all those in authority in the Church and State (2: 1-3). The passage today points us to one of the sensitive and compulsory functions of our Church fathers - ordination. The Apostle Paul warned Timothy not to be hasty in ordaining people, so he does not become a partaker in their sins (l Timothy 5: 22).

It is therefore the duty of every Christian to constantly pray for our Church leaders who have the authority of bringing people on board in the work of the ministry, so that the Lord would guide and direct them in their choices of those counted fit for the work of God in the ordained ministry. Some in the ordained ministry today have not lived up to the standards set in the Scriptures; as a result, people have blasphemed God, the Gospel and the Church because of them. Make a commitment to pray for your Church leaders at all levels daily, so that they may carry out their ministry in the power of the Holy Spirit and under His anointing, to avoid mistakes.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, guide my Bishop/General Overseer from the error of ordaining those who will disappoint you and mess up the work of the ministry, in Jesus name. Amen.

READING: 1 TIMOTHY 5: 1-20
TOPIC: CARING FOR THE WIDOWS AND ELDERLY PEOPLE

The Bible is relevant to all people regardless of their race, social class, location or status. The passage before us today addresses issues relating to widows and elders and provides guidelines on how they should show themselves as Christian examples not only to the Church but also to the society. Apostle Paul in this passage instructed Timothy, his beloved son in the faith and Pastor of the Church in Ephesus, on how best to handle relationships with widows and Ephesus: "Rebuke not an elder, but entreat him as a father….. honour widows that are widows indeed" (1Tim. 5: 1-3). Young widows are encouraged to remarry and only genuine widows should become the responsibility of the Church if they do not have relatives to care for them (vs. 9-15). He stressed further that the elders who ruled well and laboured vigorously in preaching the gospel and establishing Christian doctrine should be counted worthy of double honour; they were to be treated with courtesy and dignity (vs. 17-20).

This Pastoral Letter was to ensure that no person was either maltreated or completely neglected. We also need to pray for our Church fathers and other clergymen as well as leaders of God's flock at all levels that God will give them more grace to intensify efforts in caring for the increasing elders and widows in our Church today.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, we cannot do anything without You. Help Your Church in our age to be resolute in locating and caring for all those who are in genuine need and by so doing fulfil the law of Christ, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
