*GETHSEMANE*

What is Gethsemane?

*The name*
The name gethsemane come from two words from two different origin languages
1. Aramaic - (Gadh-Shěmãnê) Gadh means press and Shěmãnê mean oil or oils.
2. Hebrew - (Gath-Shemanim) Gath means press, and Shmanim means oil. Hebrew English translate - (Geth-Shemen) "Geth" means "press" and "Shemen" means "oil"
"Gadh", "Gath", "Geth" means "Press"
"Shěmãnê", "Shmanim", "Shemen" means "oil" or "oils"
So Gethsemane is literally the place of the *oil press*

*The location*
Gethsemane is an historic garden, It is a fenced olive grove located at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, at west slope of the Mount of Olives, across from the Kidron Valley of the Old City walls, adjacent to the Church of All Nations.
Nearby Sites: The nearby Grotto of Gethsemane (where disciples are believed to have slept) is about 190 square meters.
The Garden of Gethsemane in Jerusalem is a small, sacred urban garden covering an approximately
Area: Roughly 1,200 square meters.
Size Metric: Approximately 0.3 acres or a small city lot/garden size.
Roughly 12,900 square feet).
It is cited at about 2.5km to the Jerusalem wall and 7.2km to Jerusalem city.

*Key Aspects of the Name "Gethsemane"*
It Symbolism of Pressure:
It refers to an ancient oil press where olives were crushed to produce oil, this symbolizing the intense spiritual pressure and agony experienced by Jesus in that location.

*Christian meaning*
Gethsemane divine as a place of crucial moment of agony, submission, and victory, where Jesus Christ—fully human and fully divine—voluntarily accepted the crushing burden of the cross, the divine wrath for human sin, and separation from the Father to accomplish redemption.

*The "Oil Press":* Symbolic and Physical Agony

Literary Meaning:
The name Gethsemane translates to "oil press," symbolizing the intense pressure Jesus faced as he was "crushed" for human iniquities.

*Theological Significance:*
Just as olives were crushed to produce oil, Jesus was *"crushed" "pressed" "torment"* with the weight of humanity's sins.

*Physical Response:*
The distress was so profound it caused *hematohidrosis*, a rare medical condition where capillary burst and sweat mixes with blood.

*The Agony (Humanity):*
The intense distress, culminating in sweating blood (hematidrosis), proves Jesus's true humanity, experiencing absolute emotional agony and temptation before his arrest.

*Solidarity in Suffering:*
This agony demonstrates Jesus's solidarity with human suffering, including grief, fear, and emotional turmoil.

*The Theological Significance of "The Cup" "The Wrath"*
Metaphor for Wrath: In the Old Testament, a "cup" often symbolizes God's wrath or judgment. Jesus dreaded drinking this cup of separation from the Father, which he had to consume as the substitute for humanity.
Here, we notice that Jesus’s plea to remove the "cup" refers to bearing the full weight of divine judgment against human sin, which he willingly chose to drink.

*Voluntary Sacrifice:*
While Jesus possessed the power to avoid the cross, Gethsemane was a deliberate, voluntary act of love to satisfy divine justice.

*Perfect Submission:*
Gethsemane is the turning point where Jesus’s human will fully aligns with the divine will, concluding with "not my will, but yours be done".

*The Conflict:*
The struggle was not a battle of wills anymore between the Father and Son, but rather the human struggle to willingly embrace an immense, divine task.

*Key Theological Themes*
True Humanity:
Gethsemane is the greatest display of Jesus's perfect humanity in the Bible, showing his emotions, frailty, and fear in the face of death.

*Perfect Submission and Obedience:*
The prayer "not my will, but yours be done" reverses the disobedience of Adam in the Garden of Eden.
Here is the turning point where Jesus’s human will fully aligns with the divine will, concluding with "not my will, but yours be done".

*Strength Through Prayer :*
Gethsemane models prayer not just for emergency situations, but as a means to gain strength to discern and obey God's will.

*The Trinity:*
The event emphasizes the unity of the Trinity, as the Son consciously aligns himself with the Father's plan despite the horrific cost.

*Heavenly Relief*
When Jesus Christ fully accepted his fate humanly and surmon courage to face and carried the burden of humanity sins, He sees himself only and no consoler
The Angel came to him just for reminding of a seal agreement and a sign that he was never alone.

*Substitutionary Atonement:*
In this moment, Jesus begins to take upon himself the sin of humanity, separating himself from the comfort of the Father's presence.

*Spiritual Victory:*
Contrary to a place of defeat, it is a triumph of love over fear, where Christ decides to go to the cross, securing salvation before his arrest.

*The physical and genetic appearance of Gethsemane in Christian life today.*

I want to briefly categorized this to three; major segments
1. The situation of being Alone
2. He will never leave you
3. The pain (Agony)

*The brief analysis of the whole scene of Gethsemane*

Jesus took three of his disciples with him to support him in praying he left them at the certain place that is good for them for to fire for pray while he went up to separate and silent place for him to pray.
The whole scene cause Jesus Christ 3 hour before his arrested. Jesus prayed three consecutive times in the garden of gethsemane and he use 1 hour for each time after a round of an hour he use to came back to check his three disciples. Matthew 26:36-46. After wad the army of Rome the arrest of Jesus Christ.

*The experience of Jesus in gethsemane.*
The experience of Jesus in gethsemane is a lesson and example for us as a believers and that all believers should pass through our own Gethsemane, some believers have passed through their own already, some are passing through their own presently, mean while passing through gethsemane at times is been like God and the world is not at our side at a particular period of time, that a mind of one's in Christ will heavy and full of sorrow and most people who surround us will not know anything like we that passing through such pain.
This time, some Christians will go on different type of fasting like ( white, blue, red, long and short days, with different type of pray point, revival and vigil of different kind, going from one mountain to another and yet there will be no answer to their prayers. Some passing through of gethsemane at times for Christians is being like to denied the faith in Jesus likewise happened to Jesus, (but we learned a certain lesson here) because he accept the will of God to be done.
The time of being in gethsemane is not just an ordinary experience of mere challenges like other time of Christianity but a very hard time that if we can endure, we will give glory to God and be glorify.

1. *Situation of being alone* Mark 14:35-44
It is not that is so good to be alone but for believers it is good sometimes be alone for the best time to communicate with God if not everytime. We need to do away and separate ourselves from distractions of worldly things and concentrate on what it suppose to be of God. Jesus Christ was in this particular condition. As His habit, He use to leave the disciples in the days and went only to go and pray also many times when they sleep at night He gently wake up at certain hour, leave the disciples and went to pray.
At this Jesus state of *lonely* no family, friends, acquaintance or relative, even the disciples that were supposed to be of help in term of praying and thinking about Him were sleeping. Even Holy spirit of God left and Jesus became just man.
Christians also is being subject to this condition nowadays and your only solution is total submit of all to Christ.

*God will never leave you* Luke 22:39-43
Here is the where Jesus Christ himself became fear when there is no advicer, consoler or comforter, he became just man that face death, here Angel visit him to give hope, courage to endure.
In the center experience of lonely where everything on earth is turn against you as a Christian, the same courage of enduring the certain situation is for you Jn. 16:33, Isa. 43:2, 1cor. 10:13, James 1:2-4

*The pain (cup)* Matt. 26:36-46
This particular place is where Christian must not fear of, though most Christians nowadays does not want to being in this place because of terrified passing through is unbearable, yet all Christians must see this place as a place he must never wish he was not there. The place of the will of the Father God. Where all what will befall on a man is reveal to Him in the agony of prayer. Where you will be disappointed woefully on earth both friends, family, neighbor, acquaintance or relative will do away on their business and activities instead of helping you, all sort of lying, conspiracy, betray come up against you from them all, it will hard for your heart to control, the burden will hard and heavy on you to accept as the will of God.

*Conclusion*
Gethsemane is the way to Calvary.
It is the will of God that One, a man, Christian, must prevail in Gethsemane if God's mind will be fulfilled in the life of any man. And that man will be perfect accepted in present of God.
Here, I pray that Lord God the creator will steadfast you and all Christians in Jesus name.
