DON'T DIE LIKE ABNER

MEMORISE

And the king sang a lament over Abner and said: "Should Abner die as a fool dies?" (2 Samuel 3:33)

READ
2 Samuel 3:31-34

[31]. Then David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, “Tear your clothes, gird yourselves with sackcloth, and mourn for Abner.” And King David followed the coffin.

[32]. So they buried Abner in Hebron; and the king lifted up his voice and wept at the grave of Abner, and all the people wept.

[33]. And the king sang a lament over Abner and said: “Should Abner die as a fool dies?

[34]. Your hands were not bound nor your feet put into fetters; as a man falls before wicked men, so you fell.” Then all the people wept over him again.

EXPOSITION

Abner was a mighty man whose breath and strength posed a threat to enemies from a distance. He was the Chief Commander of King Saul's army and a leading loyalist of the king's dynasty (v. 6). He eventually pitched his tent against Saul's lineage, defecting to David's camp after Ishbosheth presented a false accusation against him (v. 7). This move was welcomed by David since he longed to make his reign spread across the whole Israel and Judah, but on clear terms between him and the party involved (vv. 12-13). Alas, Abner wasn't careful enough of the prolonged, unresolved dispute between himself and Joab on the account of Asahel's death (2:24). He thought the barking dog had been laid to rest. But Joab hadn't. In fact, he fostered the unrestrained vengeance he had against Abner into a wicked plot and carried it out on him deceitfully, without David's knowledge (v. 26).

Be cautious of these 4 types of persons you may encounter in life:

[1]. Intruders: Uninvited admirers who invade your privacy can be used as tools to harm you.

[2]. Competitors: Threatened individuals who criticise you in a harmful way due to their own insecurities.

[3]. Scavengers: Exploiters who take advantage of your weaknesses to appear stronger and demand complete loyalty.

[4]. Sponsors: Supportive individuals who invest resources and time into your success without damaging your public image.

Abner wasn't taware of these people around him. He died like a fool in broad daylight. His foresight was blurred, and insight, captured. Dear reader, learn from the ignoble death of Abner, as today marks World Day of the Dead

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord, grant to me wisdom to identify various kinds of people around me, in Jesus' name.

2. Lord, separate me from friends who are inimical destiny, in Jesus'name. to my life and

DON'T BREED REBELS

MEMORISE

And they took Absalom and cast him into a large pit in the woods, and laid a very large heap of stones over him. Then all Israel fled, everyone to his tent (2 Samuel 18:17).

READ
2 Samuel 18:1-17

[1]. And David numbered the people who were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.

[2]. Then David sent out one third of the people under the hand of Joab, one third under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and one third under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the people, “I also will surely go out with you myself.”

[3]. But the people answered, “You shall not go out! For if we flee away, they will not care about us; nor if half of us die, will they care about us. But you are worth ten thousand of us now. For you are now more help to us in the city.”

[4]. Then the king said to them, “Whatever seems best to you I will do.” So the king stood beside the gate, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands.

[5]. Now the king had commanded Joab, Abishai, and Ittai, saying, “Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom.” And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains orders concerning Absalom.

[6]. So the people went out into the field of battle against Israel. And the battle was in the woods of Ephraim.

[7]. The people of Israel were overthrown there before the servants of David, and a great slaughter of twenty thousand took place there that day.

[8]. For the battle there was scattered over the face of the whole countryside, and the woods devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.

[9]. Then Absalom met the servants of David. Absalom rode on a mule. The mule went under the thick boughs of a great terebinth tree, and his head caught in the terebinth; so he was left hanging between heaven and earth. And the mule which was under him went on.

[10]. Now a certain man saw it and told Joab, and said, “I just saw Absalom hanging in a terebinth tree!”

[11]. So Joab said to the man who told him, “You just saw him! And why did you not strike him there to the ground? I would have given you ten shekels of silver and a belt.”

[12]. But the man said to Joab, “Though I were to receive a thousand shekels of silver in my hand, I would not raise my hand against the king’s son. For in our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, saying, ‘Beware lest anyone touch the young man Absalom!’

[13]. Otherwise I would have dealt falsely against my own life. For there is nothing hidden from the king, and you yourself would have set yourself against me.”

[14]. Then Joab said, “I cannot linger with you.” And he took three spears in his hand and thrust them through Absalom’s heart, while he was still alive in the midst of the terebinth tree.

[15]. And ten young men who bore Joab’s armor surrounded Absalom, and struck and killed him.

[16]. So Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing Israel. For Joab held back the people.

[17]. And they took Absalom and cast him into a large pit in the woods, and laid a very large heap of stones over him. Then all Israel fled, everyone to his tent.

EXPOSITION

Today commemorates World Sexual Health Day. After David's lapse with Bathsheba, the divine punishment, _... the sword shall never depart from your house_ (2 Sam. 12:10), became a grim reality. It finally resulted in rebellion in its full course; it was as though David's authority and anointing had left him. No one saw this more clearly than his son, Absalom. He burned with anger when David failed to take action following the r**e of his sister, Tamar, by Amnon (13:22). When he could endure no more, Absalom decided to take matters into his own hands, seeking vengeance for his sister, Tamar, by killing Amnon. In response to this act, David banished him (vv. 37,38). Absalom's impulsive nature was further revealed when he set General Joab's field on fire (14:30). Frustrated by his father's lack of attention, he channelled his passion into undermining David's leadership, rallying support for his own cause, and ultimately raising an army to rebel against his father, the king.

Rebellion is likened to witchcraft and carries a penalty of death (1 Sam. 15:22ff). The zeal invested in rebellion is as futile as attempting to carry water with a sieve, leading to unnecessary bloodshed. Absalom's abuse of his position of authority inflicted great loss upon the Israelites. His disregard for authority, coupled with his defiance of God, plunged the kingdom into chaos. Ultimately, he died as a wayward leader whose passion led him astray, meeting a tragic end in the woods. Instead of nurturing rebellion, seek to nurture souls for the kingdom of God.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord Jesus, deliver me from the spirit of rebellion.

2. Lord, deliver our leaders from every error that may lead to rebellious acts in their followers, in Jesus' name.

3. Pray for CAC Akilling Region, our father in the Lord, the Regional Superintendent, and other officers at the various levels as led by the Spirit of God.

*TOPIC: LIFE IS A PRIVILEGE*

*MEMORISE:*
Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going *(Ecclesiastes 9:10).*

*READ: Ecclesiastes 9:3-10*
3. This is an evil in all that is done under the sun: that one thing happens to all. Truly the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil; madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

4. But for him who is joined to all the living there is hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

5. For the living know that they will die; but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten.

6. Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished; nevermore will they have a share in anything done under the sun.

7. Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God has already accepted your works.

8. Let your garments always be white, and let your head lack no oil.

9. Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of your vain life which He has given you under the sun, all your days of vanity; for that is your portion in life, and in the labor which you perform under the sun.

10. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.

*EXPOSITION*
God is the Giver of life. He owns, and is in charge of it. He takes it at will and man dies (Eccl. 12:7). So, being alive is indeed a privilege. No one can claim right upon his/her life. The greatest among the benefits one can receive from God is the benefit of being alive (Psa. 68:19; 103:3; 116:12). Will you not thank Him for that? However, being alive is for a while. People celebrate the birth of a newborn baby today, but they will later mourn his death (Eccl. 3:1-2). A Yoruba saying implies that sometimes happy times can turn into sad times. Even if you are very smart, you cannot make yourself live longer than God had ordained (Ps. 89:48; Matt. 6:27).

The crux of the Living Water dose for today has to do with how we live our lives now and what would be the end thereof. Having known that life is a privilege, it behoves you to mind the way you live your life today. Are you not misusing the privilege of being alive, judging by the way you are living your life? Are you living your life for God and others? Maybe you only live your life for yourself, if you don't want to misuse the privilege, learn to live your life judiciously by giving God first place in your life and serving Him and your generation according to His will (Matt. 6:33; Acts 13:36).

*PRAYER POINTS*
1. Lord, I thank You for giving me the privilege of being alive.

2. Forgive me, Oh Lord, wherever I have lived a careless life.

3. Pray for the traditional leaders, government leaders and church leaders to live their lives to serve God and their people.

*SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY: CAC GHB 746*
1. All to Jesus I surrender,
All to Him I freely give,
I will ever love and trust Him
In His presence daily live

*CHRS:*
I surrender all,
I surrender all,
All to Thee, my blessed Saviour,
I surrender all.

2. All to Jesus I surrender,
Humbly at His feet I bow,
Worldly pleasures all forsaken,
Take me, Jesus take me now.

3. All to Jesus I surrender,
Make me, Saviour, wholly Thine,
Let me feel the Holy Spirit,
Truly know that Thou art mine

4. All to Jesus I surrender,
Lord, I give myself to Thee,
Fill me with Thy love and power,
Let Thy blessing fall on me.

5. All to Jesus I surrender,
Now I feel the sacred flame,
Oh, the joy of full salvation;
Glory, glory to His name!

Amen.

WISE SAYING 150824
Deuteronomy 32 : 29
"O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end!"
Have you consider the end result of your actions? Until one is able to do this, one is not leaving at all, many are found doing things recklessly without thinking of the result, be it clear that whatever has a beginning must surely have an end. Start anything with any purpose; there is and end, so, always consider end before you take a decision, it is my prayer that you shall never regret any of your actions in Jesus name. Shalom.

WHO IS YOUR FOCUS?

MEMORISE

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, (Hebrews 12: 1).

READ
Luke 15:11-24

[11]. Then He said: “A certain man had two sons.

[12]. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood.

[13]. And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living.

[14]. But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want.

[15]. Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

[16]. And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything.

[17]. “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!

[18]. I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you,

[19]. and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.”’

[20]. “And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him.

[21]. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

[22]. “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet.

[23]. And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry;

[24]. for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry.

EXPOSITION

Today's dosage is about how believers can stay strong during difficult times. The passage tells Christians to keep going in their faith just like Jesus did. The writer of Hebrews reminds believers about many people before them who have already finished the race of faith, and done it well. These people like Abraham, Moses and David, are heros of faith and perseverance. Believers should remember these patriarchs and be encouraged by their heroic bravery. The passage also encourages believers to get rid of anything that distracts them from the faith, like profane possessions, desires, and bad habits, so as to stay strong and finish the race well.

The main point of Hebrews 12:1-3 is about Jesus. He is the one who started and perfected our faith. He went through the Cross and didn't care about the shame so that we could be friends with God and have eternal life. As believers, we should focus on Him. He went through the biggest trials and came out victorious. If we keep our eyes on Him, we can keep going in our faith journey with determination and strength, knowing that He is always with us. Therefore, let us stay strong and keep going in our faith, even when things are tough. if we focus on Jesus and let go of anything that holds us back, we will finish pilgrimage well. Let us be encouraged by the people who had gone before us and by Jesus. Who is the ultimate Mirror of faith and endurance

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord empower me with the grace to persevere in the midst of trials and hardship, in Jesus' name

2. My Father, grant me unshakable faith in my moments of trials

3. Oh Lord, release to Your children divine enablement to navigate their moments of troubles and trials, in Jesus' name.

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY
CAC GHB: 775

1. O weary heart, there is a home,
Beyond the reach of toil and care,
A home where changes never come:
Who would not fain be resting there?

Chorus:
Oh wait, meekly wait, and murmur not!
Oh wait, meekly wait, and murmur not,
Oh wait, oh wait, oh wait, and murmur not!

2. Yet when bowed down beneath the load
By heaven allowed, thine earthly lot;
Look up! Thou' it reach that blest abode
Wait, meekly wait, and murmur not!

3. If in thy path some thorns are found,
Oh, think who bore them on His brow,'
If grief thy sorrow heart has found,
It reached a holier than thou.

4. Toil on! Nor deem, though sore it be,
One sigh unheard, one pray'r forgot;
The day of rest will dawn for thee
Wait, meekly wait, and murmur not!

Amen.

[24]. for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry.

EXPOSITION

It is our commission to spread Christ's Gospel; a mandate that requires us to work tirelessly to make the message known to all nations. As believers, we have the responsibilities to share the hope of glory that is found in Christ with those around us. Paul was one who took this responsibility seriously (1 Cor. 9:16). He dedicated his life to spreading the Gospel. In Colossians 1:24ff, he writes about his mission to proclaim Christ's mystery to the Gentiles. He explains that Christ is in us and that we must share this message with others so that they too may know the hope of glory.

For us to fulfil this commission, we must work with all the energy that Christ provides. We must teach and admonish everyone with all wisdom, so that they may be presented mature in Christ. We must be intentional about it. We need to be willing to engage with people and be open about our faith. But we must do so with love and compassion, being sensitive to the needs of others. We need to be patient and persistent in our efforts, recognising that it may take time for the message to take root in people's hearts. The commission to spread the message of Christ is a calling that all Christians share. As believers, we have the responsibilities to share the hope of glory in Christ with those around us. Do your part in fulfilling this Great Commission; spread Christ's love to all around you.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Thank You Lord Jesus for this irrevocable calling as steward in Your vineyard.

2. Lord, equip me with the love and passion to pursue the Great Commission the way You want it.

3. Lord, restore the zeal for evangelism and missions in our churches.

1. Tell it out among the heathen that the Lord is king;
Tell it out Tell it out:
Tell it out among the nations, let them shout and sing;
Tell it out, tell it out:
Tell it out with adoration that He shall increase,
That the mighty King of Glory is the King of peace;
Tell it out with jubilation, though the waves may roar,
That He sitteth on the waterfloods, our King for evermore.

2. Tell it out among the heathen that the Saviour reigns;

THE UNUSUAL MIRACLE

MEMORISE

The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this Man!" (John 7:46)

READ
John 7:40-52

[40]. Therefore many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is the Prophet.”

[41]. Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee?

[42]. Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?”

[43]. So there was a division among the people because of Him.

[44]. Now some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

[45]. Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why have you not brought Him?”

[46]. The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this Man!”

[47]. Then the Pharisees answered them, “Are you also deceived?

[48]. Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him?

[49]. But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”

[50]. Nicodemus (he who came to Jesus by night, being one of them) said to them,

[51]. “Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?”

[52]. They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.”

EXPOSITION

Our text today is a fascinating story that highlights Jesus' power versus the disbelief of those around Him. Jesus encounters a group of people who are debating His legitimacy as a prophet. They argue that Jesus cannot be the Messiah because He comes from Galilee, a region they consider to be insignificant. However, Jesus surprises them by performing a miracle right before their eyes. The miracle in question is the healing of a man who was born blind. He followed Jesus' instructions and was miraculously healed. The people who witnessed this miracle were initially amazed, but their amazement quickly turned to scepticism. They questioned the man who was healed, doubting that he was ever blind in the first place. They turned their attention to Jesus, accusing Him of being a sinner and fraud. However, Jesus calmly defends Himself, pointing out that He had performed many other miracles that proved His divine nature. This story is a powerful reminder of the importance of faith and belief in the face of scepticism and doubt.

Despite the disbelief of those around Him, Jesus was able to perform the incredible miracle that left no doubt as to His divine powers. This story continues to inspire and captivate readers till this day, reminding us that anything is possible with faith and the power of God (Lk. 1:37).

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord, let the Spirit of faith and power be released on the Church in the land, in Jesus' name.

2. I let go of doubt so that true faith in Christ can take possession of me, in Jesus' name.

3. Pray for CAC Babalola Memorial International Miracle Camp, Ikeji Arakeji, Osun State, the Camp Manager and the staff as led by the Spirit of God.

And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" (Mark 10:47).

READ
Mark 10:46-52

[46]. Now they came to Jericho. As He went out of Jericho with His disciples and a great multitude, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the road begging.

[47]. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

[48]. Then many warned him to be quiet; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

[49]. So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called.

Then they called the blind man, saying to him, “Be of good cheer. Rise, He is calling you.”

[50]. And throwing aside his garment, he rose and came to Jesus.

[51]. So Jesus answered and said to him, “What do you want Me to do for you?” The blind man said to Him, “Rabboni, that I may receive my sight.”

[52]. Then Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road.

EXPOSITION

Faith in God brings total breakthrough in our lives. We can find inspiration from the story of the blind man in Mark 10:46-52, who despite being blind, had faith that Jesus could heal him. His faith was so strong that he persistently cried out to Jesus, despite being told to keep quiet by those around him. Ultimately, his faith led to his breakthrough, and he was able to regain his sight. This story teaches us that no matter what obstacles we may face in life, if we put our faith in God, we shall overcome them. The power of faith can be transformative, and it can help us to find strength and courage in difficult times. When we have faith, we trust in God's plan for our lives, and we believe that He will guide us through every challenge we encounter.

Of course, having faith is not always easy, and it requires us to trust in something that we cannot always see or touch. But when we choose to have faith, we open ourselves up to new possibilities and opportunities. We begin to see the world differently, and we can find hope and joy in even the most difficult circumstances. The story of the blind man in Mark 10:46-52 is a powerful reminder of the importance of having faith in God. When we trust in God's power and plan our lives according to His directive, we shall experience a total breakthrough that will transform our future in ways we never thought possible. So, hold fast to your faith, and trust in God to guide you through whatever challenges you may face.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord, may I never fail to recognise my need for Your grace.

2. Lord, help us to maximise the opportunities You give us to seek Your presence daily and listen attentively to Your Word.

3. The zeal and determination to behold Jesus' face in the moment of adversity without looking back is our portion, in Jesus' name.

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY
CAC GHB: 627

1. My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
No merit of my own I claim,
But wholly lean on Jesus' name

Chorus:
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.

2. When long appears my toilsome race,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil

3. His oath, His covenant, and blood,
Support me in the whelming flood;
When every earthly prop gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.

4. When the last trumpet's voice shall sound,
Oh may I then in Him be found.
Robbed in His righteousness alone,
Faultness to stand before the throne.

Amen.
