*Enemies of the Life of Prayer for Believers*
_
Teaching Session
1. Opening & Scripture*
*Text*: Proverbs 15:20“Pray without ceasing.”_
*Text*: Luke 18:1 - _“Men ought always to pray and not faint.”_
*Opening thought*:
Prayer is the believer’s lifeline to God. But just like any relationship, there are things that fight to choke it. If we know the enemies, we can guard our prayer life.
2. 7 Major Enemies of the Life of Prayer*
*1. *Distraction and Busyness*_
- The world is loud. Work, phone, social media, worry.
- Martha was “cumbered about much serving” and missed Jesus’ presence. Luke 10:40-42
- *Antidote*: Schedule God first. Create a quiet place.
*2. *Lack of Discipline / Laziness__
- Prayer requires intentionality. The flesh says “later.”
- Jesus told the disciples: “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation.” Mark 14:38
- *Antidote*: Set time, set place, start small but be consistent.
*3. *Unforgiveness and Bitterness
- Blocked relationship with people = blocked fellowship with God.
- “When you stand praying, forgive.” Mark 11:25
- *Antidote*: Release people before you lift your hands.
*4. *Sin and Guilt
- Sin creates distance and shame. Psalm 66:18 - _“If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear.”_
- The enemy uses condemnation to make you avoid God.
- *Antidote*: Quick repentance. 1 John 1:9 - God is faithful to forgive.
*5. *Discouragement and Unanswered Prayers__
- “I prayed before and nothing happened.” This breeds fainting. Luke 18:1
- The devil whispers: “God isn’t listening.”
- *Antidote*: Remember God’s timing. Keep a prayer journal to see testimonies.
*6. *Doubt and Unbelief
- James 1:6-7 - _“Let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.”_
- Double-mindedness makes prayer powerless.
- *Antidote*: Feed faith with the Word before you pray.
*7. *Spiritual Warfare / The Devil
- Ephesians 6:18 - _“Praying always with all prayer...”_ right after the armor.
- The enemy fights prayer because it’s where we get power.
- *Antidote*: Pray with the Word, put on the armor, pray in the Spirit. Jude 1:20
---
3. Illustrations to Use*
- *Phone analogy*: If you never charge your phone, it dies. Prayer is our spiritual charging.
- *Garden analogy*: Weeds will grow if you don’t tend the garden. The enemies above are the weeds.
---
4. Application / Challenge*
Ask the church:
1. Which of these 7 is attacking your prayer life most right now?
2. What 1 practical step will you take this week?
- 10 minutes daily
- Forgive one person
- Turn off phone for first 15 minutes of the day
5. Prayer Time*
Lead the church to pray against each enemy:
- *Against distraction*: “Lord, help me focus on You”
- *Against sin*: “Wash me and restore me”
- *For faith*: “Lord, I believe, help my unbelief”
- *For power*: “Clothe me with Your Spirit to pray”
