DAILY NOURISHMENT
TUESDAY RELATIONSHIP

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
1 peter 3:18

I've stood over the open graves of friends, family, and strangers, so I know what death looks like, how it feels, and how weak people are. But Christ's death is a great reminder that how we see and deal with death depends on our faith. I believe that God raised Jesus from the dead, and that Jesus is the first fruit of all of us who believe in Him. He is not only alive in spirit, but also has a body. We will live because Jesus did.

The glorious "name" of God is the full expression of His holy attributes, which are far too exalted for even our highest praise to fully match. His nature is incomprehensively holy and incomparable to anything we know. And yet, we are commanded to praise Him as much as we are able and to acknowledge His infinite greatness.

Nehemiah 9:5
Lord God Almighty, Your name is too glorious for me to even begin to comprehend. Your ways are exalted above mine like the heavens above the earth, and I cannot fully understand them. But I praise You, O Lord, with true knowledge from Your Word as to who You are. And I have experienced Your love and power in my life. For that I praise You also. However incomplete, I will praise You with all of my ability.

LET US PRAY
Thank you, Almighty God, for the gifts of your grace, Spirit, forgiveness, and life. Most importantly, thank you for the gift of your Son, who gave me life and immortality through your salvation. While I have no desire to die, I know that through death, I can see you and your victory in me through Jesus. Please grant me the strength to live for you every day until you call me home. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

DAILY NOURISHMENT
MONDAY RELATIONSHIP

But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
Romans 8:25

"Hope" implies something future that is guaranteed but that is not yet seen. Men do not hope for that which they already see or possess. (verse 24) It requires the faith and patience as we wait for our hope to be fulfilled. We must run with patient endurance the race set before us before we can claim the prize at the end.

John 16:32-33
There are times in everyone's life when we feel alone. Teenagers often feel alone thinking that their parents don't understand them, they don't fit in with the popular crowd in school, or they're not sure they even like themselves. The elderly can feel alone when they have lost many of their friends; they may have lost a spouse or a child. They may have had to sell their home or had to move into a nursing home far from family. Young mothers can feel alone, unsure of their ability to cope with a newborn and without the stimulation of adult conversation. When all the children have left a home, the parents often feel alone, wondering who they are now that their parenting days are over. Retirees often have a sense of loss of their identity. When a tragedy strikes, we can even feel abandoned by God. Jesus is speaking to the apostles in this passage knowing that they will abandon him and scatter in fear, leaving him alone. However, he is also telling them that he is not alone; the Father is with him and will not abandon him. Even when he quotes Psalm 22 while he hangs on the cross, he is stating his firm belief that he is not alone, his Father who has been with him all along, is with him even then. It is the same with us. No matter what is going on in our lives, God is with us, a loving Father who will never leave us alone. I have always liked the verse in Isaiah 49 that lets us know that "Though a mother may forget her child I will not abandon you." If we are feeling alone, turn to the Lord. Close your eyes, sit in a favorite chair, picture the Father's presence beside you and breathe in his love.

It is extremely important for us to know that someone prays for us and our spiritual needs in a world where we sometimes feel so alone and alienated. It is impossible for me not to hope that everyone who is a member of Today's Verse ministry, as well as you, will be blessed by knowing that you are on a spiritual journey with individuals throughout the world and that we will pray for one another today. The most effective prayer is the one Paul prayed for the Colossian companions he had never met: "May God fill you with the knowledge of His will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding." Let us pray together today.

LET US PRAY
You give us true hope, Lord, hope that is based on the surest thing in all the universe, even on Your promise. Give us the faith to hope for things yet unseen; give us the patience to endure all things without losing sight of our hope. You, Lord, are our Hope and our everlasting Reward. Amen.

DAILY NOURISHMENT
SATURDAY RELATIONSHIP

And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
Joshua 24:15

We can't speak for everyone in our family, but we can promise to do what everyone should want: serve the Lord. But let's do more than just say we'll do it. Let's show others how to do it. "Today, I will serve the Lord!" We can then ask them to come with us.

(John 15:16-17)
How well are we doing loving one another? I'm going to start with the family! If your family is anything like mine, you will have at least one person who doesn't speak to another person. Sometimes that one person wants YOU to choose sides. What do you do? Then there's the neighborhood. Feuds happen. What is your response? Moving on to the workplace, do you treat all your fellow workers with equal kindness and generosity? Your family, neighbors and maybe co-workers know that you are Christian. For them, you are an example of the faith that you – that I – profess and there are expectations. We are all God's beloved children. He doesn't play favorites and doesn't expect us to as well. Jesus gave us one command: love one another. I didn't hear any exceptions in this Gospel passage. Sometimes a simple smile can change a person's day. We are usually good when there is a crisis. We send sympathy cards or a meal to someone who experiences a loss. We might help babysit for someone who has a family emergency. But in the everyday, it's how we show respect, courtesy, kindness – love – that lets others know that we care. There's an old story about a monastery where the monks are told that Jesus is one of them. They began to treat each one as if he were Jesus and before long, people flocked to the monastery because of the love they witnessed among the monks. Well, Jesus is among us. He lives in each of us. If we begin to treat everyone as we would treat Jesus, what wonders we might see in our families, our neighborhoods, our workplaces and our churches.

LET US PRAY
O sweet Shepherd, teach me how to lead my family to adore You more. Please bless and thank You for my parents' faith. Please grant me the confidence and empathy I need to convey Your truth to my children. O God, bless those parents who strive to raise virtuous children who will marry the children You've given me someday. I want You to feel known, valued, acknowledged, and cherished in my home. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

DAILY NOURISHMENT FRIDAY RELATIONSHIP

Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
Ephesians 1:9-10

Jesus is the King! Christ was the point of God's plan. God's plan depended on Christ coming at the right time. God's plan was to bring everyone together in Christ by making Him king over everyone. God is very happy about this plan, too, because it will save us. God is the only one who can save us. Jesus saves us and rules over us. So, the real question we face today is this: In what parts of our lives, hearts, secrets, sins, or rebellion have we not given Him control?

(1 Samuel 7:22)
Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

There is no god like the living God, the great Jehovah. He is not in character as the false ideas of God so prevalent in the world. He is not like mere men. His thoughts are not our thoughts, nor His ways our ways, but His are higher, holier, and infinitely more glorious.

LET US PRAY
O Holy Father, I know that my heart can sometimes lie. I can sometimes even trick myself. But when I kneel before You and am convicted by Your Word, I am reminded of the parts of my life that I haven't fully given over to Your control and the control of Jesus. Please, dear Father, let the Holy Spirit gently show me how I've been fooling myself and convict me of it, so that I can give myself completely to Your will. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

DAILY NOURISHMENT
THURSDAY RELATIONSHIP

Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
2 Corinthians 3:6

A new covenant: God willingly made a new deal with us, His creatures, sealed it with the blood of His Son Jesus, and sent the Spirit to give us the power to live the life of this new covenant. God has given us a promise of love and grace. Then, the Almighty made us worthy and able to share this covenant with other people. It makes sense that it gives life because it gives life to us and through us.

(Acts 1:9-11)
Jesus ascends into the heavens leaving the apostles gazing up at the sky. I wonder what they thought when the two men in white told that he will return one day in the same way they saw him go. The apostles thought that he would return soon. They would never have expected that we would be sitting here over two thousand years later still waiting for him to come back. It is for this reason that it took so long for anyone to realize that they had better record his words and his actions while those who knew him were still alive. It has made so much difference in the world. Without their foresight, we might never have known about Jesus and the gift of salvation that he earned for us. The apostles didn't know it at the time, but this would be so important an event, that the world would one day count time from the birth of Jesus. They may have been a few years off, but time would no longer be dated from significant dates in a culture, such as the Romans who dated time from the birth of Romulus and Remus. We are fortunate also, that they circulated the letters of Paul, Peter, John, James and others so that we would know about the beginnings of Christianity and how it would spread in the known world. Can you imagine being there on that day, not knowing, not understanding? Would you or I have continued to believe? Would we have stayed in Jerusalem waiting for the Holy Spirit that Jesus had promised? Would we have understood what he meant when he promised to send an "Advocate" to help them understand all that Jesus had taught them? I would like to think that I would have had that kind of faith, but I am grateful for all those who came before, so that my faith could rest on theirs.

LET US PRAY
Thank you, holy and powerful God, for your grace, which has saved me from sin and bought me back from the law of sin and death. Thank you for sending your Son and your Spirit as gifts so that I can live with you in a covenant of life, grace, and love. Even though I tell you about my flaws, I promise to live to honor your sacrifice, love, and covenant. I trust that you will give me the strength I need to become what you want me to be. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

DAILY NOURISHMENT
WEDNESDAY RELATIONSHIP

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
1 peter 2:9

Explicitly excluded. Unaccepted. Discarded. Abandoned. Forgotten. Separation. Unpicked. Each of these approaches addresses a different aspect of feeling unimportant. Satan provides us with the means and opportunities to feel bad about ourselves through our sinful bodies. Nevertheless, God adopted us into His family through Christ and gave us a reason to live. These two words are among the most significant in the Bible. It is now our privilege to belong to the people of God. We are part of the winningest of winning teams. It has been a pleasure to work with you! As a result of God's grace, His love has engulfed us and we now belong to His family. It is Peter who urges those who have been treated unfairly and mischaracterized to decide whether to think of themselves as "nobodies" or under their new names. Peter's words also touch our hearts, which is fortunate for us. You are a child of God, my dear friend in Christ. Like Moses, Esther, Paul, and Mary Magdalene, you are members of His enduring and victorious people. Christ has removed the power of sin and failure from you and given you the power of grace through the Holy Spirit who resides within you. It is therefore imperative that you live today as the person you are in Christ and not as the person you were previously.

In him was life; and the life was the light of men.And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not(John 4:5).

Death equals darkness, whereas life equals light. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, those who believe in him have eternal life. That means they have been called out of darkness and into the light. Hallelujah! Furthermore, darkness will never overcome the light for his light shines in the darkness. Much like how even in the darkest room the flicker of a candle light is seen, his light will never be extinguished.

LET US PRAY
O Father of Mercy and God of all grace, thank you for making me new. You made me your child, a part of your people, and someone who has a purpose in the world around me. Please help me hear how you see me and not how Satan sees me. Please help me figure out who I am based on what you say about me, not what I say about myself. I thank you for making me who I am and freeing me from what I used to be. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

DAILY NOURISHMENT
TUESDAY RELATIONSHIP

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
1 peter:5:8-9

Satan is not a game or a make-believe thing. He is real, and his power is meant to hurt. But instead of worrying about him, let's resist him when he tempts us and put our attention on Jesus. He is the one who won the big battle with Satan at Calvary. He took Satan's most powerful weapon and made it useless. Now we can fight back, and Satan will run away.

Do you want to live differently than those who do not follow God? Stop grumbling! As believers, we are told to avoid grumbling and arguing in everything – instead, we should do all things as unto Christ. If you take a look around, you will hear a lot of people grumbling and complaining. Imagine how different you will look if you replace the constant complaining with joyful thanksgiving – you will shine like the stars in the sky.

LET US PRAY
Thank you, All-Powerful God, for sending Jesus to free us from Satan's grip. Through the death of the Savior, you've shown me that my own death won't be the end of our relationship, but rather the start of a new life with you. Today, though, I want you to help me fight against Satan's power in my life in the ways below. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

DAILY NOURISHMENT
MONDAY RELATIONSHIP

According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.
Philippines 1:20

It is easy to be fearful or worried about how nonbelievers will perceive you; however, as the Apostle Paul shows, we have nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to Jesus Christ! Instead, we should boldly share our faith in Jesus with others. Yes, people have suffered for their faith (and some have even died), but we should be courageous enough to allow both our lives and our sufferings to display Jesus boldly.

We are told not to judge others and yet, the practice of judging people by their family connections is probably as old as humanity. It obviously true during the Babylonian exile; it was prevalent in Jesus time, and it is true today. If it weren't a common practice, then God would not have had to ask Ezekiel to pass on the above message. Parents are often blamed when one of their children gets into trouble, is arrested or becomes addicted to alcohol or drugs. I have known families who have one child in jail and another on the police force! I have known children who have overcome the embarrassment of having had a parent who was in jail or who was an addict. When Jesus cured the man born blind, he was asked if his blindness was called by his sin or the sin of his parents. Jesus responded that his blindness was not the result of anyone's sin. If a woman has a miscarriage, or has a child with a birth defect, she is sometimes asked if she took something or did something that might have caused it, as if she is somehow to blame! Why is it that we insist that bad things that happen to people must be the result of something they did to deserve it? I am so grateful that God does not judge us by the same standards that we often use to judge others – even though we're not supposed to be judging at all! May we pay attention to ourselves and our own behavior and make sure that it is in line with what God expects of us and leave the judging to the only one who has that right – God.

LET US PRAY
Dear God, thank you for loving me enough to send Your Son to save my life. Thank you for not turning away from me while I was yet a sinner even though You had every reason to be ashamed of me. Forgive me for the times when I was ashamed and scared to share my faith in You with others. Give me the boldness to share Your hope with others. In Jesus' name, amen.

DAILY NOURISHMENT
SUNDAY RELATIONSHIP

And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.
John 19:38-39

The historical context of both these men mentioned in the passages is interesting in that both while not strict adherents to Jesus whilst he was still alive, came nevertheless to him after his death. In trying to ensure Jesus had a proper burial, they both made themselves unclean for Passover, but nevertheless became converts in Christ. Even from beyond the cross were these men so moved that they came to Jesus. It is never too late for us either, to turn to Christ for salvation!

Some people claim a religious persuasion because it is the religion of their parents. When questioned, they can't give a reason for their beliefs. Without knowing why they follow a particular path, they can easily lose their way and be led away from God. We were given a "road map" of sorts by Jesus, and following this leads us to eternal life in heaven. Satan would be happy to have us listen to those who would turn us away from this path. This passage mentions "a good conscience." How do we develop a good conscience? First and foremost we need to listen to the voice of Jesus in the Gospels. We need to look at the commandments and read the letters to the early Christians that help to provide guideposts along the road. The early Christians were persecuted for their beliefs. They were also ridiculed for their joy and their desire to do good. You would think that goodness would bring praise and not ridicule, but it really is no different today. Those who work for the poor, or try to bring justice into our society are put down either as being a "goody-goody" or as being dangerous for trying to upset the status quo. Goodness can make others feel guilty and since they don't want to feel guilty, they blame those who are good. Have you noticed that people often stand back when someone needs help, but once one person steps in to help, the bystanders will join in? It seems that there are more people interested in taking pictures of a tragedy and then posting them on social media than they are in getting involved! I don't know what kind of conscience they have, but I wouldn't call it "good." I wonder if they have ever heard Jesus' parable of "The Good Samaritan?" We have heard. We do believe. We have hope and we can tell others the reason for our joy.

LET US PRAY
Lord my guide, I thank you for Your loving heart, which remains forever open to all men. Let all who hear the name of Jesus, be drawn towards Your accepting light and embrace. I ask all this, so that I may see Your Paradise swell, and hear all the clearer Your name rejoiced. Jesus Christ and Lord Almighty up on high, praise be Your welcoming hearts for all mankind. Amen.

DAILY NOURISHMENT
FRIDAY RELATIONSHIP

And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
Colossians 1:17

The God we know and love is sometimes described as the Alpha and the Omega. This phrase caught on as it was the first and last letters within the Greek alphabet in the early translations of the Bible, signifying the start and the end of all things. It is one of the aptest monikers for our Lord God, for even though the Bible has been rendered into many different tongues, they all depend on the letter and the word. It is in His word that we know Him, irrespective of the tongue; He is the beginning and the end of the word, and the word is everlasting.

It's a great gift to be able to use the right word at the right time. But even the best speakers have to admit that their best words aren't even close to as good as the Spirit's. Still, we can't make excuses for our insensitive words, lack of kindness, or missed chances. You can't say you didn't hear what was said. It's a cop-out not to be spiritually aware of what our friends need. Self-deception is as simple as not knowing the Bible well enough to bless others with kind words at the right time. When we listen to God's Word and then listen to other people, our ears and hearts are tuned to bless others.

LET US PRAY
Heavenly Father, grant me Your words and open my heart so I may contemplate on thy everlasting truth. Let me continue to study, learn and live by Your teachings each and everyday, for I seek to please and know You Lord, just as my spirit wishes to enter Your merciful embrace. Amen.

DAILY NOURISHMENT
THURSDAY RELATIONSHIP

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Acts 4:12

Worship not false idols! It may seem perhaps as one of the more antiquated commandments, being as it was passed down in Moses' time when many tribes worshipped their own and before our Lord God truly revealed himself to them. But false idols still exist today, those in the ministries who seek fame overspreading the truth, or those in our popular culture who in arrogance proclaim themselves larger than life with their legions of followers. These are not our true gods, and our focus and adoration centered on them only serve to take away the love which could be given to Him, our Lord.

Zeal – Fervor for a person, cause, or object; eager desire or endeavor; enthusiastic diligence; ardor. The psalmist is in trouble. He is suffering from exhaustion, alienation and persecution because of false accusations. There are those of us today who become alienated from our families or friends because of trying to live out our faith as Jesus wants us to. In John's Gospel, Jesus is so incensed by the money-changers in the temple that he overturns their tables and kicks them out of the temple area. He quotes this psalm as the reason for his behavior. We are being asked to examine where our fervor, our ardor, our diligence is found. As baptized Christians we are called to be the apostles of our world now. Does our zeal lead us to carry the good news of Christ into our homes, our workplaces, our neighborhoods? Does our zeal flow over into working to end injustice? I am appalled at those who claim to be Christian and then choose to quote out of contest, verses from Scripture that justify their behavior. The money-changers used the need for the people to offer sacrifice for their business of selling the animals, but the Bible did not say that they could cheat the people by over-charging them! If we suffer for our zeal for the Gospel, we are suffering just as the psalmist did and as Jesus did. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells us that this will happen. We are carrying in our hearts the good news of the Gospel. Do we really understand this privilege? This responsibility? May our love for Christ and his church enflame each one of us with a burning zeal to make God's kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.

LET US PRAY
My Lord God, make me a humble servant and adherent to the commandments set out by thee. Blind my eyes and deafen me to the sight and sounds of false idols, who parade as fraudulent messiahs. Turn my eyes and ears instead only to Your message Lord, and Your beautiful light. Amen.
