"And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me." (Mark 8:34). Becoming a believer in the Lord Jesus is not necessarily an easy decision. Continuing on then as a disciple of the Lord will involve personal sacrifice. Discipleship is costly - it's not about personal ease, comfort, convenience or what "feels right". It's about sacrificial obedience.

Well, that’s a relief!

It makes me feel a whole lot better!

When reading Paul’s words I feel relieved (not for the first time!) that God applied His own unique standards when He ‘chose us in Him before the creation of the world’(Ephesians 1:4).

Note that Paul says, ‘not many’, rather than ‘not any’! God chose erudite, educated Paul as well as ‘uneducated and ignorant’ Peter and John.

However well-educated, powerful, wealthy or influential we may or may not be, God can use us.

Compared to Him we are nothing; working with Him we are everything!

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." (Mark 10:45). As the divine son of God, Jesus could rightly have asserted His authority and status when He came to earth. That wasn't His mission then, but rather to be a servant of others and ultimately to give His life as a ransom for all.
He is coming again though and then He will rightly assert His authority and status as King of kings and Lord of lords.
