FLASH BACK: NORTHERN HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY SPEAKER WHO REJECTED CAR GIFT

There's this story about UTC MOTORS in Kaduna. It became big because that was where the Northern House of Assembly members were given loans and car maintenance. Many years earlier, Sir Ahmadu Bello was travelling to Kano and his car broke down near Funtua. He was trying to repair it when one white man drove by, saw him and drove back. He told Ahmadu Bello that he was also going to Kano. This young man drove Ahmadu Bello in his car and said he would send some men from his office, UTC to go back and repair the car.

Many years later Sir Ahmadu Bello remembered the young man and sent for him. When Sinnemann was found, Ahmadu Bello requested him to open a branch of his company in Kaduna. The man said he would have to get permission from Europe. When he secured the permission he established UTC in Kaduna and it soon rivaled that of Lagos. The white man was so grateful due to the success of Kaduna office that he took a brand new car to the Speaker of the Northern Regional House of Assembly Alhaji Umaru Gwandu,as a gift.

The Speaker said, "you can see two cars in my compound, one personal, one official. I don't need any other car". This was the character of our past leaders who served with the fear of God, loyalty, honesty and dedication. They were accountable, transparent and incorruptible. They served with the interest of the people first and didn't used positions for wealth accumulation.

What we have today is many of our leaders will negotiate and collect gratification up front. Many of them cannot explain their wealth, living in exotic mansions funded by looting our commonwealth. A people that forget the defining moments of its past would eventually go into oblivion. May God Almighty bless Nigeria with leaders that will work for the people and not for themselves.

Alh Umaru Gwandu, MHA, CMC,CBE,CON.(1913-1974). He was born into the Gwandu ruling house in 1913. After the customary Islamic education at home, he attended the Gwandu Elementary School before going to Sokoto Middle School. He capped it by going through the elite Katsina Higher College. Umaru Gwandu started work as a teacher in the Sokoto Middle School in 1938 and remained there till 1945. That year he was appointed Private Secretary to the Emir of Gwandu and served in that capacity till 1948. He contested and won election into the Northern Regional House of Assembly where his career climaxed in 1959 when he was elected the first Speaker of the House.

He held this position diligently to the admiration of all including even the opposition members of the House until the ugly and unfortunate events of January 1966 which terminated the elected government of the day. In recognition of his meritorious service to the community and the Northern Region at large, he was conferred with the Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St. George (CMG), Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE), and Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON). After the creation of States he served the North Western Government as a Special Duties Officer in charge of distribution of relief materials to drought victims in drought affected areas. His duties also included devising ways and means of providing portable water for rural communities in the State. He died on the 1st of December 1974 in a motor accident along the Sokoto Birnin Kebbi road.

May Allah Swt forgive all his shortcomings, enlarge his grave and shed light upon him in it and admit him into Aljannah Firdausi.

5 Lessons I Learned From The Book ‘As a Man Thinketh’

1) You Become What You Think

You are what you are right now because of the thoughts you once had or have. If you want to change yourself, you should first start with changing your thoughts. All the actions of man arise from the hidden seeds of thoughts.

Just with the right choice and application of thought, man can ascend to divine perfection; while with wrong choice and application of thought, he can rise below the level of the beast.

Good thoughts and results can never produce bad results; bad thoughts and actions can never produce good results.

2)Your Mind is Like a Garden

The author creates an analogy of our mind with the garden. We either choose to cultivate our mind wisely or let it run wild. If we don’t plant the seeds of beautiful flowers in our garden, the garden will itself produce some useless weeds.

Just as the gardener weeds out all unnecessary plants it is the responsibility of every individual to plant the right seeds, nurture them, and at the same time put out all the weeds. When we do this, our life becomes beautiful. But if we do the exact opposite and feed the weeds, our life becomes a mess.

3) Thoughts Not Just Affect Mentally, But Also Physically
How and what we think has a significant impact not just on the mental level but also physical level. The body is the servant of mind and it obeys the order of mind be it deliberately chosen or automatically expressed.

The author argues that the people who live in constant fear of disease are the ones who actually get it. Therefore being healthy is not just about the body, it’s also more about the mind.

Change of diet will not help a man who will not change his thoughts.

Thoughts also affect how we age. If we just pause for a second and observe the people around us, we can see people in their nineties with bright smiling faces. But we also can see the people who are just in their mid-thirties whose face is drawn into unharmonious contours.

4)You Are Not Shaped by Your Circumstances

If you believe you can’t get something just because you came from a different background or because your environment doesn’t support you, you are wrong my friend. You are not shaped by the circumstances rather the outer world of circumstances shapes itself into the inner world of your thoughts.

No matter what the circumstances are, you always have the freedom to choose how to respond. And the best response is always to choose to focus on the areas you have control of. When you focus on what you have control over and improve that way, you win in life.

Men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves; they, therefore, remain bound.

5)Actions And Thoughts Must Go Together

The knowledge preached by some of the self-help gurus about thoughts is that you will achieve whatever you think if you just believe it. This is also represented as a law of attraction and the idea is sold to many people.

James Allen, who is also considered as the pioneer of the self-help movement was clear that just having thoughts are not enough. Thoughts are just the starting point. And if we don’t harmonize our thoughts with the right actions, we will never accomplish what we are set to.

Just wishing for things and waiting for them to come to you will not help you in any way. You must go out, take action and earn it, whatever it is you want.

It’s our duty, as leaders, to guide our teams, families, organizations, and nations to achieve great goals. However, we cannot say we have succeeded as leaders without improvement in the qualities (character, competence and capacity) of those we lead.

Power in any form (financial, political, social, spiritual) puts tremendous pressure on our character and can shift our values, resulting in destructive choices and behavior. We can balance power with humility, if we don’t forget that the purpose of power is to serve others.
