๐Ÿ“œTEXT:JUDGES 6:33-40๐Ÿ“œ

๐Ÿ”‘๐Ÿ“–```KEY VERSE:``` _*"Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said" (JUDGES 6:37).*_

Leon McKenzie wrote, "We come into the world with question marks in our heads... which are never fully erased." We are not alone. Sarah doubted she could have children in her old age. Moses doubted he could save Israel out of Egypt's bo***ge and Thomas doubted Jesus' resurrection.

Gideon also doubted God's call on His life. In preparation for his commission to deliver Israel, he wanted a proof from God that He would save Israel through him. He put a fleece of wool on the floor and asked God to allow the dew fall on it only while the ground around it would be dry. After this was done, he asked God to confirm his commission by reversing the miracle with the fleece now dry and the ground wet.

Gideon's test is not a model for New Testament saints. He was the Old Testament version of doubting Thomas. It took the angel from God a while to convince him that he was the right man for the job. Then Gideon got thousands of volunteers when he sent messengers to the tribes for help in the war. Gideon still hesitated until yet another sign. He was asked to visit the camp of the Midianites and hear one of the soldiers narrate a dream that indicated he and Israel would win the war, before he moved.

We have a better covenant with better promises and provisions than the Old Testament saints. Above all, the Holy Spirit dwells and abides in us to lead and direct in all things. God still speaks to His children today through various means including the Scriptures and the Spirit's inner witness. We must not hesitate after knowing His will, direction and purpose for our lives.

๐Ÿ“œTHE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:*NEHEMIAH 11-13*๐Ÿ“œ

*MEDITATION*

*Seeking for confirmation of divine guidance*

*1. The wisdom in seeking for confirmation*
a. We are in the last days when, more than ever before, divine guidance or messages can be misinterpreted, "counterfeited" and misunderstood.
b. The Bible commands that we should "test the spirits whether they are of God", I John 4:1.
c. In view of the multiplicity of false prophets and prophesies, the Bible commanded that "Let the prophets speaks two or three and let the other judge", I Corinthians 14:29. An indication that the prophets themselves may be deceived or can be deceivers.
d. The human reasoning is never sanctified and can be hijacked by thoughts from different sources with claims of divinity. So we must be very careful.
e. Satan and his agents are also specifically assigned and empowered to pretend to be from God and thereby deceive or confuse those who are naive, 2 Corinthians 11:14. "Satan also appears as angels of light".
f. The only perfect canon for determining the divine authenticity of a guidance, revelaltion or prophesy is the written Word of God, Isaiah 8:20.
g. So there is wisdom in asking for confirmation of a supposed divine guidance, revelation and prophesies.

*Question*
a. Can you think of examples of saints who were deceived of being led by God and they paid a heavy price for not seeking confirmations.
b. Was Gideon right therefore to ask for confirmation of divine guidance?

*2. When to ask for confirmation*
a. If Gideon was asking for confirmation to confirm whether it was God speaking to him, his mind or another spirit, he would be justified. But that was not the case.
b. Gideon had no doubt that the message was from God. His asking for confirmation was out of needless unbelief and fear as if God may not either be trustworthy or lack the power to do what He promised. Some ask for confirmation to see if God will change His mind.
c. Once we are sure that it is God that is speaking or it is written in the word of God, what God demands from us is obedience of faith. Asking for confirmation in such cases amount to lack of faith in God.
d. For a sincere seeker, God confirms His guidance or messages in different ways. He could use another method to speak to you, there could be confirmation through His anointed ministers or directly from His written Word. He can decide to give you increased peace or withdrawal of peace while still seeking His face.

*Questions*
a. What are the other unacceptable reasons why some wait for confirmation after they are certain of the word of God?
b. There are cases of people in the Bible who doubted God after hearing His word and they were severely punished. Can you recall some of them? Think of Zechariah the father of John the Baptist.

*3. The written word of God is above confirmation*
a. Once it is the written Word of God in the Bible, there is no higher authority to test its authenticity. It is final and perfect, John 17:17b, Matthew 5:18.
b. The Bible is the breath and the word of God put in written form for ease of circulation and reference, and therefore is final on all issues including doctrine, faith, moral, science etc.

*Question*
Do you exalt the word of God above all knowledge, learning and wisdom in your life and reasoning?

*Prayer points*
Praise God for the Bible God has giving as light to mankind without which man would have been in utter darkness๐Ÿ™
Ask God for more understanding and faith in His word so as to give it the rightful place in your life๐Ÿ™
Ask God to be teaching you from His word so that you will never be deprived of divine guidance๐Ÿ™
Ask that the Spirit of deceptions, doubts and darkness will not have a place in our midst as a church ๐Ÿ™

*DON'T BE A SLAVE TO TRADITIONS*

๐Ÿ“œTEXT:COLOSSIANS 2:18-23๐Ÿ“œ

๐Ÿ”‘๐Ÿ“–```KEY VERSE:``` _*"Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances" (COLOSSIANS 2:20).*_

Traditions are long held practices that have been passed from one generation to another. Generally, successive generations simply hold on to these practices without trying to question their veracity and appropriateness. Most cultural traditions and customs are based on beliefs and superstitions that cannot be established by any empirical or scientific proof. It takes real enlightenment and sheer will to break away from certain long-held beliefs and customs.

Writing to the believers in Colosse, Paul spoke of the unreasonableness of continuing to hold on to certain traditions even after they had professed to have died with Christ. Some of these traditions were forms of worship and professed spiritual knowledge outside the revelations in the Bible. Some still held on to some restrictive customs and religious abstinence, which surrounded days of worship, what to touch, eat, etc. All these curtailed the liberty of the believer in Christ. The apostle, therefore, wrote that having been born again, Christians are not to continue to allow themselves to be enslaved by these unscriptural customs and beliefs.

Today, we still find some Christians holding on to traditional practices and festivals believed to have been handed down by so-called 'church fathers' but which do not have Bible backing. They observe certain days as being holy, forbid certain kinds of food as unclean, follow certain religious festivals (like the length period of forty days fasting), pray to certain saints and angels and follow prescribed prayer patterns. All these are perishable traditions of men and do not have any spiritual bearing or benefits.

Christians must not allow themselves to be enslaved by these traditions, customs and false worship. Having been set free by Christ, we must pursue those things that will benefit our spiritual lives and help us to please the Lord.

๐Ÿ“œTHE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: *JEREMIAH 22-24*๐Ÿ“œ

*MEDITATION* *THE PROBLEM WITH GRACELESS TRADITIONS IN RELIGION*

*1. The deceptions of sensual traditions*
a. They involve voluntary self humiliation or self abasement, vv18, 23. This makes it to look like godly activities.
b. Worship of angels or other supposed supernatural beings different from the Godhead are allowed, v18.
c. The foundation of such traditions are based on visions or dreams and not clear scriptural teachings, v18.
d. Human reasoning or intellect are used to establish those traditions and not the pure scriptural teachings, v18.
e. The beginning and the end of such are mere externalism without grace of God, vv20,21.
f. The principle behind them are worldly principle without the will of God as the original motive, v20.
g. The motivation is self will, the will of man or conforming to the world with less or no emphasis on the word of God, v23.
h. The flesh is aroused and satisfied to the detriment of the Spirit in such traditions, v23.

*Question*
Can you think of institutionalised religious practices, worship, ceremonies and festivities that fall into mere religious traditions using the criteria above?

*2. The danger of unscriptural traditions*
Unscriptural traditions are not innocent but dangerous. Some of the problems include the following.
a. They are deceitful. They appear good but are mere deceptions, v28.
b. They rob worshippers of the reward of worship or of their good actions v28, Mark 7:7.
c. They do not edify the body of Christ except that they just turn on the flesh, v19.
d. They do not give honour to Christ the Head but to the flesh, v23.
e. There is judgement for all forms of comformity to the world in our worships and practices, James 4:4.

Whatever actions, festivities or worship that are not giving honour to Christ but merely or partly satisfy the flesh is vain worship, Matthew 7:7.

*Prayer points*
Lord, open my eyes to all traditional practices, worship or celebrations that are not pleasing to you๐Ÿ™
Lord, purge me from all fleshly worship or practices not pleasing to you๐Ÿ™
Deliver your church from all worldly comformity in worship, practice and celebrations๐Ÿ™
Let the old time religion that is pleasing to you prevail in your church ๐Ÿ™

*GOD STILL DELIVERS*

๐Ÿ“œTEXT:PSALM 18:1-19๐Ÿ“œ

๐Ÿ”‘๐Ÿ“–```KEY VERSE:``` _*"He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me. They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my stay" (PSALM 18:17, 18).*_

A young convert was said to have regretted that he did not encounter much calamity before his salvation. He said he would not have great testimonies when others would be reeling off volumes of evidence about the Lord's greatness in their lives. He claimed that he did not face life-threatening challenges that brought down the mighty arm of the Lord that delivered others.

He was not like David who never ceased to have grave challenges in his life. At a point, David sought refuge in an enemy territory. While human beings harassed him, wild beasts also contended with him, during which he slew a lion and a bear at a young age. God delivered him from all these difficulties.

When the Lord allows us to go through extremely dangerous trials, it is to challenge us to call upon Him with unwavering faith for a way of escape. He comes to our rescue before we are harmed. The reason is to have moving testimonies about His power, compassion and love. This comes up as evidence that He is the God who fulfils His promise that He will never leave nor forsake us.

Presently, the entire world is in the grip of an ailing system that is battling with deadly diseases, environmental problems, crime, political instability, decline in moral values, etc. The solution remains the adoption of "David's formula" of calling on the Lord for deliverance. It worked in his day; and it will work again today.

๐Ÿ“œTHE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:*JEREMIAH 15-18*

*MEDITATION* *GOD SHOOK THE WHOLE EARTH BECAUSE OF A SINGLE SAINT IN TROUBLE?*

*1. The tribulation of the psalmist*
The psalmist was confronted with life threatening challenges and distress, vv3b-6a.

*Questions*
a. How did the psalmist expressed the intense tribulation, troubles and threats that confronted him in vv3b-6a? Note that "hell" mentioned stands for
"grave".
b. Are your challenges life threatening?

The greater the glory, the more intense the battle and the more definite your victory if you don't back out. David never backed out and he became a reference point of triumph to date๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
*2. The travail and prayers*
The psalmist used the verbs "call" and "cry" to describe the intensity of his prayers.

*Questions*
a. How is "calling" and "crying" to God more intense than mere prayers?
b. What do you do in practice when you are confronted with this kind of prolonged troubles? What kind of prayers do you offer?

When Jesus was in the garden of Gethsemane battling with life threatening challenges, "He *cried* unto Him that is able to save Him..." Learn how to ceaselessly cry unto God when danger looms until you experience deliverance.

*3. The thunderstrike with power*
As a result of the cry of David alone, God thundered from heaven, shook the whole earth and flew upon a cherub to heaven and saved him from his strong enemies, vv7-17.

*Questions*
a. Read carefully vv7-17 and identify the forces of nature that God used to bring deliverance to David.
b. Also observe the expression of the gravity of God's anger and how it affected the whole earth from its foundation just because of a single saint. They are figurative expression of what happened in the spirit realm.
c. Why did God go this length because of a single person?, v19b.

God delights in all His saints who knows how to wait on Him and cry till their situation changes. God will do for any saint, who acted like David, what He did for David, because He is impartial. If it was only one sinner that was on earth when Jesus came, He would still die because of that single sinner because He is a good, great and gracious Deliverer. God will not allow your challenges to drown you before He visits you. Cheer up. Isaiah 43:2.

*4. The thanksgiving and praise*
The psalmist responded with thanksgiving and concencration to put his confidence solely in God, vv1-3.

*Question*
What is your own concecration?

*Prayer points*
Praise God because you are so greatly precious in His sight๐Ÿ™
Ask God to teach you the art of crying and calling upon Him like a baby without getting fed up๐Ÿ™
Cry to the Lord that He will come down and shake the earth from its foundation and deliver you from your strong enemies๐Ÿ™
Pray to God that we will experience more of His deliverances in the Church๐Ÿ™

*SIMPLY UNFATHOMABLE*

๐Ÿ“œTEXT:PSALM 19:1-6๐Ÿ“œ

๐Ÿ”‘๐Ÿ“–```KEY VERSE:``` _*"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork" (PSALM 19: I).*_

One evening, a young man was taken to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in a West African country for the first time in his life. In the distance, the mild glow of the setting sun cast its rays upon the low waves close to the lad. He stood in awe. Finally, after a spell of speechlessness, the boy asked his guide, "Is there an engine under the waters causing the water to move like that?" His elderly guide went on to explain that it was the unfathomable Designer of the universe at work.

The psalmist is also intimidated by the great works of creation. As he adores their Maker, he picks the elements one by one as a mark of honour to the Almighty who fashioned them into the order and beauty in which we find them. But the psalmist goes beyond saluting these phenomenal spectacles. He says these works of God themselves hail their Designer. Thus, our Creator does not leave Himself without witnesses to His matchless craft.

This challenges man, the crown of all God's handiwork, not only to emulate nature by acknowledging His love and essence, but also to submit totally to His injunctions to appreciate Him. Man who was formed in the image of God enjoys more of His blessedness than the sun, moon, stars, sea and hills. But they still "declare the glory of God...[while] the firmament sheweth his handywork."

The most outstanding way to esteem our Lord's love for us and surpass what nature does is to meekly accept God's plan of salvation and praise Him for even preparing an infinitely better abode for us hereafter. We must also propagate His glory to others so that they can worship the wonderful Creator.

*MEDITATION* *DECODING THE DIVINE REVELATION IN THE SKY*

*1. The real truth*
a. The glory of God and His handiwork are already coded in the heavens, v1. Those who don't have access to the Bible have no excuse.
b. There is unfathomable and inexaustible knowledge about God coded in the sky, v2b.
c. The heavens have coded and continuous messages and information for the wise who cares, vv2,3.
d. The divine messages are universal and not restricted to a particular geographical location, vv3,4.
e. In particular, the heavens accommodate the sun which, using human language, appear every morning like an honourable bridegroom coming out of his chamber to the delight of men, vv4,5.
f. The sun moves as it were in a circuit (confirmed by science) and there is no geographical location in which its impact and heat is not felt, v6.

*2. Reflections on the truth*
a. The universe has about 10x10 power 24, i.e. 10 billions of trillions of trillions observable planets of which the earth is one of the smallest.

*Reflection*
What does this show you about the eternal power of the Creator.
b. Those innumerable planets are those that can be observed by astrologers with their powerful instruments. Many are still unobservable.

*Reflection*
What does this teach about the omniscience of God compared to man's limited knowledge? Should any man in his senses challenge, undermine, question or query the wisdom and intelligence of God?

c. Just like the sun moves in a circuit as mentioned in the text, all the planets move at incredible speed in an orbit without collision or falling.

*Reflection*
What can you say about the power of God in keeping those heavy planets rotating in the sky without falling or colliding with each other? Will God has difficulty keeping His saint from falling? Jude 24.

d. The earth, for example, orbit at 1000 miles per hour and has been doing that from creation. Yet the speed is constant and there is orderliness and peaceful coexistence in the sky.

*Reflection*
How does this teach us that God is a God of peace, orderliness and consistency?

e. The heavens is a beautiful place of wonders to explore. Some spend fortunes for space travel to behold the wonders of creation.

*Reflections*
If the heavens are so beautiful, what can you say about heaven itself where God and the saints live? If you cannot afford space travel, make sure you don't miss heaven.

f. There is no pollution, climatic or human in the heavens. Space travellers who could travel there still desire to go over and over.

*Reflection*
What can you infer about the purity and holiness of God from this information?

No wonder, the Bible says it is only a fool that says there is no God.

*Question*
What other things can you learn from the nature of God from His created heavens?๐Ÿค”

*Prayer points*
Give praises and glory to God for His majesty and power๐Ÿ™
Pray that your inner mind will be opened more and more to see the majesty and greatness of God๐Ÿ™

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze;
3.
And when I think that God, His son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin;
4.
When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration,
And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!

*GETTING HEAVEN'S ATTENTION*

๐Ÿ“œTEXT:PSALM 17:1-15๐Ÿ“œ

๐Ÿ”‘๐Ÿ“–```KEY VERSE:``` _*"Hear the right, O LORD, attend unto my cry, give ear unto my prayer, that goeth not out of feigned lips" (PSALM 17: I).*_

Bible scholars identify the historical background of this plaintive composition as the period when David was on one of his numerous flights from Saul's murderous campaigns to eliminate him. He and the hundreds of crack fighters that were faithful to him were in danger of being slaughtered by Saul's hounds. There was nowhere to hide, as the king appeared to be closing in on them wherever they sought shelter. But David knew where to seek unfailing protection - the throne of God. He knew how to reach Him and secure His attention.

David was aware that it was not enough to be in trouble and run to the Lord for help. Certainly, God is the ultimate Expert in delivering the oppressed. But the seeker of help from heaven must meet some cardinal conditions. He must be free from sin and not be a hypocrite.

Having fulfilled these conditions, David boldly approached the Lord with his demands. He requested, "Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings, From the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who compass me about". Believers are in more need of this divine protection because the world is in a worse state of alienation from God, and Satan is fighting hard to alienate more people.

Those in one difficult situation or the other can seek the Lord's help. But they must ensure their prayer is one "that goeth not out of feigned lips" in order to get heaven's attention. Believers must have confidence in God's unfailing power to protect them from all adversaries.

*2. The content of the prayer*
Not all prayers today are inspired or made according to the will of God. Carefully read vv2,5,6,7,8-10,13 and itemise his prayer points. Of note is how he prayed against his enemies.

*3. The cruelty of the adversaries*
The adversaries, no matter their pretence, are out for a total kill. Read through vv4b, 9,10,11,12,14 and check out the activities of the adversaries that confirm their cruelty.

*4. The character of the Deliverer*
Our Deliverer is mighty. Being under the *shadow* of His wings is sufficient to give you full protection, v8, Psalm 91:1. Meditate on vv6,8,15 and see why the saints who call upon God has no reason to fear๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿ”‘๐Ÿ“–```KEY VERSE:``` _*"And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them"*_
_*(JUDGES 8:4).*_

_"Make hay while the sun shines"_ is an old English proverb that counsels that one should make the most of his opportunities while he has the chance. John Heywood first recorded it in a poem in 1546. In old English, he wrote,

_"Whan the sunne shinth make hay,_
_Whiche is to say,_
_Take time whan time comth,_
_Lest time steale away."_

The leaders of Succoth and Penuel who encountered Gideon as he and his army fought the Lord's war were too short-sighted to take heed to this advice of seizing upon the moment to gain the glories of the future. They had the opportunity of associating with the success awaiting Gideon when he requested much needed provisions for his war-weary troops. They declined, arguing that since he had not yet won the war, why should he and his soldiers be helped?

But Gideon's victory had been guaranteed. Despite the fact that his forces were weak, they kept pursuing God's enemies. They paid a heavy price for refusing to assist Gideon. God's promise to help His people in times of crisis will never fail even if the entire world deserts them.

As we serve the Lord in the midst of adversity, trials and rejection, we must remember that the battle is the Lord's and not ours. He will do the fighting. All He requires is retention of our consecration like Gideon and his brethren. We must be ready also to support God's people as they execute His programmes. Never be discouraged because the Lord will back us up as we wage war with the gospel against ungodliness and vices in our society.

*MEDITATION* *A LESSON ON SPIRITUAL WARFARE*

*1. Situational report at the warfront*
a. Spiritual warfare follows the pattern of physical warfare.
b. Both of them are matters of life and death and never a joking matter.
c. Gideon, with 300 soldiers, was confronted with 135,000 soldiers of the Midianites, 8:10.
d. 120,000 soldiers of the enemy were slaughtered remaining just 15,000 who managed to escape with their two kings.

*Question*
If you are in the shoes of Gideon, what will you do since he and his 300 soldiers were tired, hungry, thirsty and fainting?, 8:4,5. Rest, relax or return home after a successful exploit?

*2. Spiritual lessons on warfare*
a. If the host of the Midianites are oppressing you and not allowing you to prosper, reach your zenith or enjoy the fruit of your labours, you must be ready to fight, 6:1-4. If you don't want to fight, be ready to remain a slave forever๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
b. Spiritual warfare is not against a particular known person but against evilforces controlling the adversaries, Ephesians 6:12. Spiritual warfare also determines the outcome of physical warfare.
c. The weapons are basically spiritual and not for physical assault, 2 Corinthians 10:3,4, Ephesians 6:10-16.
d. Don't be satisfied with partial victory, it must be total. Learn from Gideon. If you quit after partial victory, you are going to meet a more prepared, deadly and equipped foes tomorrow.
e. Physical weariness and wants of water, food or convenience should not be given as an excuse. They were faint and yet pursuing. It was when Jesus finished the battle on the cross that He said, "I thirst".
f. Don't quit or give up even when the battle is getting hotter. Gideon did not quit. Heaven as destined all His children to be victorious. Jesus did not quit on the cross. The angels, while in deadly fight against satanic hosts, did not quit and were willing to pay the ultimate price, "they loved not their lives unto the dead", Revelation 12:11b. Jesus Himself said, "Men ought always to pray and not to faint"๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
g. Your confidence and faith should be in God alone. How can you explain 300 vs 135,000 i.e. 1:450? To each Israelite soldier was 450 enemy soldiers. Only God could have given them victory. So expect supernatural assistance, support and intervention.

*Prayer points*
Father, endow me with the spirit of an untiring spiritual warrior๐Ÿ™
Lord, give me the anointing and faith that are greater than my challenges๐Ÿ™
Lord, empower all the brethren to be strong in the Lord and in the power of your might๐Ÿ™
I command and decree that all the demons behind wars in this nation and against Ukraine be bound. This should be repeated๐Ÿ™

*HYMN* STAND UP, STAND UP FOR JESUS*

1. Stand up! stand up for Jesus!
Ye soldiers of the cross ;
Lift high His royal banner,
It must not suffer loss:
From vict'ry unto vict'ry
His army shall He lead,
Till every foe is vanquished
And Christ is Lord indeed.

2. Stand up! stand up for Jesus!
The trumpet call obey;
Forth to the mighty conflict,
In this His glorious day:
Ye that are men now serve Him
Against unnumbered foes;
Let courage rise with danger,
And strength to strength oppose.

3. Stand up! stand up for Jesus!
Stand in His strength alone;
The arm of flesh will fail you,
Ye dare not trust your own:
Put on the gospel armour,
And watching unto prayer;
Where duty calls, or danger,
Be never wanting there.

4. Stand up! stand up for Jesus!
The strife will not be long;
This day the noise of battle,
The next the victor's song:
To him that overcometh,
A crown of life shall be;
He with the King of glory
Shall reign eternally.
