The birthright was Esau's by birth but Jacob's by promise. While He who had the right by promise was in hard labour for 20 years in his inlaw's dwelling place, He who had the the right by birth was already a prince in the earth.
But that God should have the preeminence in all things he said "I will have mercy on him whom I will have mercy... it is not of him that willeth nor of him that runneth but of the LORD that showeth MERCY.
Ultimately, it is to him who had the right by promise that it was said "In thee shall all families of the earth be blessed"
