I bet you've heard these words countless time.
I woke up this morning with a burden to remind young leaders:
Regardless of your intentions, the internet saves all you feed it and leaves a trail behind: a footprint.
In 2020, Boeing communications chief Niel Golightly resigned following an employee's complaint over an article the former U.S. military pilot wrote 33 years ago arguing women should not serve in combat.
The article was a contribution he made as a 29-year-old pilot in a debate that was live at that time.
Thirty-three (33) years later, he was forced to resign six months into his appointment because his view in the article was not consistent with the organization's values.
Here is my piece of advice for every young leader, you are a brand. Never forget this!
As you navigate the media space, it is important to keep in mind that the world is watching you and what is permitted today will not be tolerated when you come under the spotlight.
The spotlight will not only reveal the glory in you; it will come with a band of reckless mob whose assignment will be to drag you down the mud.
You must be smarter than them. You are a leader; not the one waiting to lead tomorrow. You are the one taking the lead today.
I assume you have same faith in yourself. I see you and I have strong conviction that you will achieve greater things someday.
You must be intentional about the footprints you leave behind as you tread this noble path.
Those who are comfortable in the dark and have no hopes of ever taking the stage can choose to drive recklessly on this space; but not you.
Someday you will be great, you will be a CEO of a company, a President of an organization, a Political icon... you will do great things. Don't make mistakes that will haunt you when your dreams come to past.
I understand we all make mistakes. I have made a lot of mistakes myself. But now that I know better, I am more conscious about myself and I try not to leave the future to chance.
It doesnโt matter how young you are, your future is not as far off as you think. Your actions and inactions are creating it daily.
I understand that you will grow, you will evolve, you will give up old beliefs and reach out for new ones. This is growth and it is expected.
But remember, they are those who are preparing to pull you down. They are the sons of belial.
They will come for you just like they came for your saviour -Jesus. They will look for every opportunity to hurt you, your career, ambitions, and even relationships.
Refuse to give them undue advantage over your future self. And like Jesus, when they come, you will be bold to say, "๐ป๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐
Watch what you post, share, tweet and comment on. What could simply have been a careless post, tweet, or video might have long-term negative effects.
Don't just join every "cruise" and say anything.
In the words of John Obidi:
Know when to speak, when to be quite and when to walk away.
I love you.
I am rooting for you; YOU WILL BE GREAT.
Take the Lead.
