THE CHURCH IS FULL OF OSTRICHES
The Ostrich like every winged creature was called to fly. This is why it was given wings and beautiful ones at that. Yet is does not fly. It knows nothing about the beauty of gliding. It has little experience about the science of aerobatics. It is ignorant about testing its strength in the eyes of the storm.
It cannot conceive the safety of dwelling on the crest of mountains. Neither can it visualize the joy of perching on tree tops, beyond the reach of predators. The Ostrich can merely run very fast on the ground. It is content with doing what four forted beasts are called to do. The question is, why? Why can’t the Ostrich fly the way God purposed for it? Why must it flee by running instead of flying.
The answer lies in its character. The Ostrich is a rebellious bird. It does not follow instructions but does what it is not supposed to do. It looks for an alternative plan instead of the one assigned to it. Originally a wild bird, it has been domesticated in South Africa nevertheless, it retains, like all previously wild creatures, the original character of its proto-types. It has beautiful wings designed for flying, yet it cannot fly.
Its flight supporting features are too weak, its marrow’s are “empty” and its opinions “useless.” It is big of “nothing”. It cannot support itself in the air. It has all the likeness of a bird, but it is not a true bird. It is like a whale which lives in the water, has all the external features of a fish, but is in fact an animal. It is like a bat which flies in the air but is not a bird. The message for us is clear. The house of God is full of Ostriches. It is reeking with people who have gifts which are not used to do the things for which they were given. Many Christians are doing things they are not called to do.
They have the signs of godliness but they deny the power behind it. They have the gifts of the spirit but they cannot bear good fruits. “By their fruits they will be known”, so the bible says. But no one knows them by the fruits of righteousness. They passively manifest the gifts of God. Like the Ostrich they retain the gift of wings but do not bear the fruit of flying. God allows them to retain these gifts because he honours his word above his name. His word says that “the gifts and callings of God are irrevocable by man”. God Himself will not revoke them. Thus anybody can still appropriate these gifts by using the right principles, even when they are living in disobedience.
This is only natural. The Ostrich does not do away with its wings even though he cannot use them. He retains them as if to deceive people as to whom he really is. This is the case with many Christians in the house of God. They will blast in tongues and proclaim messages in prophecy. But don’t be deceived, they speak not in the tongues of God but of demons. They prophesy not the expectations of God, but the message of Satan. If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy going and a clanging symbol and if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge… but have not love, I am nothing. (1st Corinthians 13:1-3).
Love is the ultimate fruit of the spirit. It cannot be fakes. It is not die. The Ostrich does not symbolize it. Jesus does, because Jesus is love. “Love never ends; as for [the gift of prophecy] they will pass away as for tongues they will cease, for our knowledge is imperfect and our prophecy will pass away” (1st Corinthians 13:8:-10). Everybody needs Jesus the perfect symbolism and personification of love: the author and finisher of our faith, the light of the world, the bread of life. Everybody needs Jesus, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, that their eyes may be opened to the tricks of those who like the Ostrich will manifest gifts without the fruits to back them up.
You must know the truth and the truth will set you free. You must have the Holy Spirit and he will teach you all things. The Bible says “He will guide you into all truth; He will shew you things to come…” (John 16:13-15). The importance of the Holy Spirit is that with Him you can identify those whose aim is to deceive the elect, those who show a sign of righteousness but deny the power of God. They are many in the house of God. They may have the beauty of the Ostrich, they may have his wings, they may have the gifts and calling of birds, but they cannot fly.
