‘Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus.’
Hebrews 10:19 NKJV

Martin Luther had a good friend named Frederick Myconius who became very ill to the point of death. Luther wrote to him: ‘I command thee in the name of God to live because I still have need of thee in the work of reforming the church…The Lord will never let me hear that thou art dead but will permit thee to survive me. For this I am praying, this is my will, and may my will be done, because I seek only to glorify the name of God.’

We think of speaking softly to God, of humbling ourselves before God, but not of praying boldly. Yet that’s what the Bible says we should do: ‘Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus…let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith…Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful…Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise’ (vv. 19, 22, 23, 35, 36 NKJV).

Prayer is not about persuading God to let go of something He’s reluctant to give. He’s more willing to give than we are to receive. He’s actually looking for opportunities to bless us: ‘The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him’ (2 Chronicles 16:9 NKJV). So pray boldly and be confident that God will do what He promised.

PURSUE GOD’S PURPOSE FOR YOUR LIFE

‘“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you…plans to give you hope and a future.”’
Jeremiah 29:11 NIV

Nothing is more gratifying than knowing one’s purpose – even when opposition seems unbearable and other distractions threaten to overshadow it. Often when people say they don’t have a passion for anything, they mean they don’t have faith to believe they could actually do what they really desire in their hearts.

Jesus refused to let anyone pull Him away from His purpose. ‘Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?”’ (Luke 12:13-14 NIV). In essence, Jesus was saying, ‘I’m not about to get distracted by conducting an arbitration hearing between you two. That’s not part of My purpose for being here on earth.’

Even up to the day that Jesus gave His life on the cross, there were many sick people needing healing and a myriad of other impossible situations that needed His attention. He knew that through the power of His death and resurrection, all could be addressed. So, despite unresolved problems, He confidently gave His heavenly Father this report on His ministry: ‘I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do’ (John 17:4 NLT).

Jesus refused to let His disciples, Satan, well-meaning family members, needy people, or anyone else distract Him from His purpose. And you must learn to do that too. This raises the question: can you state your God-given purpose in a single sentence? Are you pursuing it?

I live triumphantly through the Word and by the Spirit, far above sickness, disease, and death. Irrespective of circumstances, I have and enjoy life to the fullest. No infirmity can be housed in my body. I refuse to accommodate anything contrary to God’s Word for me. Amen

JESUS IS IN YOUR CORNER (1)

‘If anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.’
1 John 2:1 NKJV

You might not know the name Angelo Dundee, but you’ve undoubtedly heard of world champion boxer Muhammed Ali. For more than two decades, Angelo was in Muhammed Ali’s corner – literally. He was Ali’s corner man! He also trained other world boxing champions. One of the great descriptions of Jesus is, ‘He’s our “corner man”!’ ‘If anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.’

In his letter to Timothy, Paul exhorts us to ‘fight the good fight’ (1 Timothy 6:12 NIV). And you’re going to get knocked down a time or two. But you’ve got a corner man who once went three rounds with death itself. He got knocked down at the cross, but He got back up three days later. He walked out of the tomb, winning the fight against sin and death. Where is He now? He’s at the right hand of the Father, interceding for you. In other words, Christ is in your corner!

And He’s not the only one. Jesus called the Holy Spirit the ‘Paraclete’, which translates in English as comforter and counsellor. Paraclete is a military term referring to Roman soldiers who would fight back-to-back when they got into hand-to-hand combat. They protected each other’s blind side, and that’s what the Holy Spirit does. The Holy Spirit has got your back. And Christ is in your corner. The prophet Isaiah calls Him our rear guard: ‘The Lord will go before you, the God of Israel will be your rear guard’ (Isaiah 52:12 NIV). You don’t just have one member of the Godhead interceding for you – you have two!
