It Is Okay!

THURSDAY, 22ND JULY 2021

John.4:6-7 “Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.” (emphasis added).

Today’s scripture reference shows us both the humanity and humility of Jesus. John tells us that Jesus was weary, tired, and thirsty. This is Jesus the water of life, the Rock that gave water to the Jews when they were in the wilderness. Jesus was that rock; that is why there was an issue when Moses struck the rock. He is the Maker of the heavens and the earth; yet He walked on earth, got tired, and had to sit down. It is okay to be tired. If you need to sleep, there is nothing wrong with it; go and sleep. There was a time in my life that I used to feel very guilty when I sleep. Why am I sleeping when there is so much work to be done? But God delivered me. Jesus shows us that it is okay to sit down - it is okay. It is okay to pause and gather yourself when you are tired.

In that culture and in those times, men felt superior to women. So, for Jesus to ask and ask nicely was humility. If He decided to take the woman's bucket, I am sure she could not fight Him. But Jesus said, “Please give me a drink.” Yet some of us cannot just be humble for a second and say, ‘please’. You have done something wrong and you cannot even say, ‘sorry’. Some argue; ‘How can you expect me to say sorry to you know? When I was in Secondary school, you were still in primary school.’ Really? If Jesus, the Maker of the heavens and the earth, can say ‘please’ then who are you exactly? If Jesus can say ‘please’ then who do you think you are that you cannot say, ‘please’? It is humbling to see Jesus take this path of humility - instructive. This is Jesus; He owns everything, even the well and He still said, “Please, can I have some water.” Wow!

The next question is, why did the Samaritan woman go to Jacob’s well at noon, at the hottest part of the day? People typically fetch water in the morning or in the evening when it is cool, not at noon. They had to carry the water long distances back home because mostly the water sources were at the outskirts of the village. Walking such long distances, carrying water at noon was unusual. But she came at noon, why? The truth is that Jesus would have met her at whatever time she showed up if God determined for Jesus to meet her. What this means for you and I is, sometimes we are ashamed of maybe things in our lives. So, we do not want to show up maybe among classmates because everybody is driving a Mercedes Benz and you are cruising a ‘Leg-edes-Benz’. You take a motorbike and stop three blocks away from the meeting. Then dust your suit, wipe off the sweat, drink some water, and go in for the meeting. When the meeting ends, you hang out in the lobby until everyone goes then you find your way. I used to do that too.

It was a suspicious time to come to the well. She had had five husbands; the Rabbi’s had declared three to be the limit for women. She was ashamed of herself, but Jesus was not ashamed of her. There may be things in your life that you think you are ashamed of, Jesus is not ashamed of you.

Prayer: Father, I thank You for taking away reproach from my life. Help me stay humble and find rest in You always, in Jesus Name. Amen!

John 3:30 “He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.”

Jesus was an equalizer he came to show man that nobody is better than anybody. In Luke 14:7-11 [please read], Jesus advised that when you go to a party, do not take the front seat because someone greater than you can come. Jesus is saying, people are on different levels. When you fail to recognize that, they will humble you and take you to the back where you belong. John 3:30 “He must increase, but I must decrease.” (NKJV]. Your greatness is tied to the person or persons for whom you must decrease. This is huge. Your greatness is tied to the person or persons for whom you must decrease. John the Baptist’s greatness was tied to Jesus. As he served Jesus' greatness, his own greatness became secure.

Matt.11:11a “I tell you the truth, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John the Baptist…” (emphasis added). Isaiah, Elijah, Moses, Adam, Noah, David, Solomon; Jesus says, of all that have ever lived no one is greater than John the Baptist. How did John attain that greatness? ‘I must decrease, He must increase.’ There are people that, your job, what heaven requires of you is to just sit down and intercede for other people to be successful. ‘But it is not fair, why can't I be the one…’ Listen, you cannot compete with a fish swimming in water. People are crafted for different purposes and you need to get that.
Let me try and bring this home; the greatest companies on earth are those who recognize the customers they need to serve and serve them with everything they have. They literally become their servants. Some companies feel they are only called to some certain clients and for some, it is only the blue-chip companies they serve because they are the ones that can pay their bills. So, their greatness is tied to serving those companies. There are organizations today that have the potential to be great, but they do not have a culture of service. Service simply means, I am here to do your bidding. If you are a businessperson, if you want to be great and you want your company to be great, then identify your customers and serve them. If they cough, ‘Sir, I heard you cough. Here, please take some cough syrup.’ This may sound funny but that is what serving means. I am not saying you should be anybody’s boy but remember, Your destiny is tied to who you serve, who you choose to serve, or who you refuse to serve. Enough said.

I know it feels like you are drinking from a fire hydrant. While you are still grinding on one thing, another one hits you. I understand that, but you must take these truths, sit with God, and wrestle with them. Know who you are, so that you can know who you are not. Recognize those who are greater than you. Recognize who you must decrease for because your greatness is tied to the person or persons for whom you must decrease and to who you choose to or refuse to serve.

Prayer: Father, let these truths that I have learnt today indeed become keys in my hand that I will use to unlock the greatness You have stored up for me, in Jesus Name. Amen!

Recognition

SUNDAY, 18TH JULY 2021

1 Cor.15:41 “The sun is glorious in one way, the moon is glorious in another way, and the stars are glorious in their own [distinctive] way; for one star differs from and surpasses another in its beauty and brilliance.” (AMPC].

John 3:27 “John answered them, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless God bestows it.” (TPT]. Look to God and God alone as your source and do not be jealous of any man. The truth is, it does not make sense to be arrogant because you are nothing without Jesus – nothing! It does not make sense to be arrogant because a man can receive nothing except it is given to him from heaven, – nothing! What do you have that you look at and it fills you with pride which translates to arrogance? 1 Cor.4:7 “For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?” (NIV]. In other words, if there is nothing you have that was not given to you, how can you be proud? I am a product of somebody's grace, somebody's generosity.

Where is the arrogance coming from? 1 Peter 4:10 “God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.” Even though this verse speaks to spiritual gifts, you can apply it to any other gift. What do I have that you do not have? The purpose of what I have that you do not have, is so that I can use what I have to serve you. What do you have that your neighbour does not have? That thing that you have that your neighbour does not have, the purpose of that thing is so that you can use it to serve your neighbour that does not have. And I want you to really think about it; what do you have that other people do not have? If you did not know what to do with it before now, I have just told you. Take it, steward it, and serve. Philip.2:3 “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.” I never consider myself as better than anybody else, I just don't because there is nothing, I have that was not given to me. So, there is no need to be arrogant. To be arrogant is to displaying foolishness.

John 3:30 “He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.” This is one of those statements some people really struggle with. This is John the Baptist, everything was going well for him, ministry was booming. The military generals were coming to him for baptism, he was even abusing them, ‘You brood of vipers, snakes who told you to come?’ [Matt.3:7]. Yet John saw someone who had practically no one following Him at that time and John said, ‘that man is greater than me.’ Who does that? Only someone that knows who they are. Your inability to recognize people greater than you will limit your greatness. Once again, your inability to recognize people greater than you will truncate your greatness. The glory of stars is different, one star varies in glory from another, but all stars have glory. People are on different levels of greatness. Can you increase? Yes, but you need to recognize the people ahead of you.

Prayer: Father, I ask for the grace and wisdom to serve others with the gifts You have given me and the grace to recognize and honour people who are greater than me, in Jesus Name. Amen!

Nothing Except

SATURDAY, 17TH JULY 2021

John 3:27 “John replied, “A man can receive nothing [he can claim nothing at all] unless it has been granted to him from heaven [for there is no other source than the sovereign will of God].” (AMP, emphasis added).

A man [born again or not] can receive nothing, except it is given to him from above. Yesterday we looked at the first two implications of this statement. The first implication is, Look To God And God Alone As Your Source. The second implication of this is, Do Not Be Jealous Of Any Man. You find your security not in what you have but in whom you are, I am a child of the Living God. Guess what? If I really want that thing that you have, I will ask the Person that gave you because He is my Dad and He will give it to me. That is how it works. If you have something that I want, I am going to be your friend. I am going to celebrate with you because you attract what you celebrate. If somebody has what you want and you are beefing the person, eyeing the person, you are repelling the things that you want.

I will become your friend; I want to know what makes you able to attract this kind of thing. I will learn everything I can learn from you, that is how I am. Do not be jealous of any human being, do not be afraid of anybody. Why? A man can receive nothing except it is given to him from above. A man can receive nothing, nothing! Isa.51:12 “I, yes I, am the one who comforts you. So why are you afraid of mere humans, who wither like the grass and disappear?” You can replace the word afraid with any negative emotion. Why are you afraid, why are you jealous, of mere human beings? There is no reason to be jealous even if the person has more money than you, there is no need to be jealous. God says, “I, yes I, am the one who comforts you… Olufemi Monehin. Put your name there.

Look to God alone as your source and do not be jealous of any man. You have six children, but you see somebody that has twelve and you are jealous. Why are you jealous? I know what you are thinking; you have six, you see somebody that has two and you are jealous. I know that is what you are thinking; you are not jealous of twelve, you are jealous of quality and not quantity. You are wondering why you did not stop at baby number two so that you can be enjoying your children and growing together. Whichever way, there is no need to be jealous because a man can receive nothing except it is given to him from God.

The third implication is, It Does Not Make Sense To Be Arrogant. Pride does not even make sense. I went to minister in one of our churches and the Pastor for some reason felt he needed to eulogize me. So, I go up and I say something like, ‘let's put our hands together for Jesus.’ But they were not clapping the way I really wanted so I had to stop them. I said, “When we say that we are nothing without Jesus, it is not a statement of humility, it is a statement of fact.’ We are not trying to be humble; we are nothing without Jesus, we are merely stating the obvious.

Prayer: Father, I thank You because every good and perfect gift comes from You alone. I will look to You alone, I will not be jealous or arrogant, in Jesus Name. Amen!

From Heaven

FRIDAY, 16TH JULY 2021

John 3:28 “You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah, but I have been sent ahead of him.’” (NRSV]

John the Baptist know who he was. There is nothing as good as being comfortable in your skin. There will be only one Messiah and His Name is Jesus. The fact that your son is not the Messiah does not mean he will not fulfil His destiny. Some people cannot even bear the fact that their sons will play a role like John the Baptist and be preparing a way for somebody that is greater than him. They will say to him, ‘Is Jesus not your mate? You are even older than Him. How come you are the one to be His boy?’ We infuse unhealthy competition into the lives of our children. What if God has just called that boy to carry Jesus' sandals? What if that is his destiny? You pressure him out of his destiny, he becomes miserable, gets on drugs, and gives you problems. Instead of you to allow him to carry Jesus' shoes.

John 3:27 “John replied, “A man can receive nothing [he can claim nothing at all] unless it has been granted to him from heaven [for there is no other source than the sovereign will of God].” (AMP, emphasis added). A man can receive nothing except it is granted by the Sovereign will of heaven, except it is given to him from above. A man can receive nothing, nothing except it is given to him from above. A man, born again or not, a man; the president of your nation could never have been president if it was not granted from above. When you see things the way God sees them, you stop fighting what you have no business fighting. You need to understand that a man can receive nothing except it is granted to him from above. There are three implications to that statement and John the Baptist unpacked it beautifully for us. The first implication is, Look To God And God Alone As Your Source. A man can receive nothing except it is granted from above, so look to God as your source. James 1:17 “Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.”

The second implication of this is, Do Not Be Jealous Of Any Man. Do not be jealous of any man. I have been saying this for over twelve years that I have been pastoring. By the grace of God and the grace of God alone; there is no man under heaven that I am jealous of. It does not exist; I am not jealous of anybody. Note that I did not say that there is no man under heaven that is better than me - two different things. There will always be someone better than you in one area. You are beautiful, there is someone more beautiful that makes your beauty look like rags. You are tall, there is always someone taller. You are slim, athletic, fast, intelligent, wealthy there is always somebody out there that is slimmer, more athletic, faster, more intelligent, and has more wealth than you. The issue of not being jealous is not because you have everything, it is because you are secure in your Father, in your God, in your Maker.

Prayer: Father, I will look to You and You alone as my source and by Your grace, I will be secure in You my Father, my God, in Jesus Name. Amen!

Big Picture

THURSDAY, 15TH JULY 2021

John 3:28 “You yourselves know how plainly I told you, ‘I am not the Messiah. I am only here to prepare the way for him.’”

When we do not know who we are, we do not know who we are not supposed to be. So, we try to be who we are not supposed to be because we do not know who we are. But when we know who we are, we will know who we are not. And because we already know who we are, we would not be trying to be who we are not. The first place I started Pastoring years ago was in a redbrick building. God blessed us and we had a lot of air conditioning units. However, when we left the place to the land, we packed up the cooling units because we knew that we were going to use them when we built and there was no point buying new air conditioners. So, we put them in the store. I drove past the former location often and I noticed a new church had begun to use the building. But I looked and there were no air conditioners, I could only see fans.

I know that building, it can get very hot in there because the air circulation is poor. So, I kept wondering how they were coping. Each time I passed, I would pray for the church and go. Time passed, months passed, and they did not have air conditioners. I said to myself, ‘You have air conditioners in the store, and your brothers are having fellowship and sweating in the heat. Does that even make sense?’ I called the Pastor even though I had never met him before that time, I told my team to deliver all the air conditioners to him, about twenty-two split units and they did. He was shocked and said, ‘I have never seen anything like this. You are a Pastor and I am a Pastor; even with Pastors in our own denomination, the competition is so strong. They can never give me air conditioners; they would instead leave us to sweat and suffer. But you just gave us everything?” I smiled and said, “The reason is because you are my brother. We are not competing.” He says, ‘Pastor, do you know the cost of all these air conditioners?’ We did not take a dime from them; we did not even ask for a fraction of what the unit’s cost. It is not required.

When I saw that he was still struggling, I asked him to follow me and I showed him a large piece of land. I said to him, “If the church I pastor has an auditorium as big as this large piece of land, it would be filled with people.” He said, “Amen” and I said, ‘There will still be people out there that need Jesus and it is only you that can reach them.’ There are people I cannot reach; I am not deceived. But if I can empower my brother that can reach them, have we not reached them? We have reached them, and the Kingdom of God is better off. Unfortunately, it is 'dog eat dog'. There are people that have told me about Pastors that go on their pulpits and say horrible things about me, even though they do not know me. Some Pastor came to me and said, ‘Why is it that when people go to your church, they do not want to come back?’ So, I said, ‘I do not know; maybe they find God? What do you think?’ I did not know how to answer him. We must be different; we are not in competition with anybody, our DNA is unique.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, please help me to run my own race, in Jesus Name. Amen!

Light Gift

MONDAY, 12TH JULY 2021

John 3:16-17 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” (KJV]

John 3:18 “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son.” Jesus came to save not to condemn. Unfortunately, the image of the Church particularly in the Western world, in the US and other western nations, is that the Church is judgmental. The polls are horrible. If you ask an average millennial what comes to mind when they hear the word church. Most of them say, ‘They are judgmental people who judge and condemn people.’ But that is so opposite.

Jesus says, “I have not come to judge.” Jesus came to save. So, where is judgement? The judgement is this; the world is already in darkness. Jesus came and if you look to Him, you will find life. But if you reject Him, you continue in your normal state of darkness. John 3:19-21 “And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.” (NRSV]. This is so important, and you have to get it.

Imagine a school that is engulfed in darkness; the halls, classrooms, and hostels are in darkness. Then the Principal brings his generator, plugs it to the assembly hall, powers it up and there is light. So everywhere except the assembly hall is filled with darkness. The principal then says, everyone who wants light should come into the assembly hall. When you come into the assembly hall, what do you find? Light. When you stay back in the dormitory or the classrooms, what do you have? Darkness. The assembly hall that is filled with light is like Christ; when you put your faith in Him, you have light. When you do not, you are in darkness already.

However, light exposes. When people come to light, they see that they are dirty, and they want to run back to darkness. But God says, ‘Stay in the light.’ The mistake a lot of people make is, they do not understand that the Person that provided light also provided soap and cleansing. The soap makes you whiter than snow. The hyssop, the disinfectant that He uses to take away the disease is the Blood of His Son, Jesus. He does not only provide light, He provides cleansing. Guess what? You may be cleansed but your clothes are stinking. He does not only provide light and cleansing, He provides clothing. He wants to robe you in white. There is no amount of good works you can do, when you come into light, it is like filthy rags. Your attempt to please God with good deeds should end today. Why? The best of our works, when it comes into light, is as filthy rags.

Prayer [Hymn]: To God be the glory, great things He has done. So loved He the world that He gave us His Son. Who yielded His life an atonement for sin. And opened the life gate that all may go in. Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the earth hear His voice… Amen!

Of The Spirit

SATURDAY, 10TH JULY 2021

John 3:5 “Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.” (emphasis added)

John 3:8 “The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.” It also means that you cannot explain the operations of people that are born of the Spirit. People that are born of the Spirit follow the Spirit so you cannot predict them, the same way you cannot predict the Spirit of God. Every Christian is supposed to be born of the Spirit.

The word Spirit in Greek is Pneuma and in Hebrew it is Ruah. Interestingly this is one word in Greek and Hebrew that means the same thing. It means both Spirit and Wind. It means breath, it means wind. The Spirit, which is like water, is also like wind. You can hear it, you can see its effect, but it remains invisible. You can hear the Spirit, you can see the effect of the Spirit, but you cannot see the Holy Spirit. Many people can hear the Holy Spirit, and many have seen the effects of the Holy Spirit – healings, salvations. But nobody has seen the Holy Spirit. “…Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going…”

By the time we get to John 3:9, we see that Jesus had pulled the rug off Nicodemus’ feet. Nicodemus was flat on his face and all he could say was, ““How can these things be?” [John 3:9, NRSV]. Picture all the things we have been explaining for the past few days, these things were coming at Nicodemus in a matter of seconds and all he could say was, “How are these things possible?” John 3:10 “Jesus replied, “You are a respected Jewish teacher, and yet you don’t understand these things?” The New Revised Standard Version puts it this way, “Jesus answered him, “Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?” The term teacher of Israel is a technical term used to address the Pharisees. The Pharisees call themselves, teachers of Israel; they brandish the name and title. Jesus is saying, Mr. Nico, you are a teacher of Israel and you do not understand these things? Nicodemus was expected to understand the concept of rebirth because the concept was not new.

God prophesied about it in Eze.36:26 “A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” (NRSV]. Nicodemus was confused and Jesus was frustrated. Knowing this makes me a little bit easy on myself because sometimes I get frustrated with some people that are expected to know somethings, but they do not know it. And I am wondering, should you not know this thing? That is where Jesus was here. John 3:11 “I assure you, we tell you what we know and have seen, and yet you won’t believe our testimony.” The first two references of ‘you’ are singular and the third one is plural. Jesus was saying, what if I use things that you cannot even relate to?

Prayer: Holy Spirit, You are the Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding, I ask that You infuse me afresh with wisdom and understanding as I engage God’s Word, in Jesus Name. Amen!
