FOR THE CHURCH OF GOD

For a while now, I have had this burden to speak concerning the body of Christ.

Do you want to know why it's as though the church is weak and powerless? Can a house divided against itself stand?

The church have left the main thing and are busy chasing shadows.

They are the most divided group in the entire world with the mentality of my church and doctrine is better. Ask yourself, did Christ you claim to follow establish any church? He was rather after the gathering of saints and sharing of the word.

They have left the kingdom mandate and are busy chasing money by whatever means. Money is now being worshipped instead of God. The leaders go on police es**rt while the members are advised to use the sticker with their picture as protection.

They don't know the difference between a building and the body of Christ. They are busy looking for who built the biggest mansion whereas the body of Christ which is suppose to be the people are malnourished. God doesn't live in mansions but in the heart of men.

The church is busy preaching the law because of selfish gain. Nobody is talking about the renewal of mind anymore or personal walk with the God within which is what is really needed. If our minds are renewed, we won't have the kind of chaos in the world today.

Everybody goes to church but very few hearts are with God or even know who God is actually. Many Christians call on the Lord names but their hearts are so far away from God and there is personal walk with God.

Everybody is after doctrine which has turned man into something the creator may not recognise if he is searching for each of us.

Know this:

*the God you are searching for is not in any other place but within you.

*what you need is the renewal of your mind and not hypocrisy or religious acts

*if you know your bible well, you would know that Christ was actually against religion. He consistently preached against it.

*the body of Christ is you and not that mansion

*it is spirituality you need not religion. The point where your spirit man connects with the God within you.

*etc

The Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) world wide celebrates the annual juvenile thanksgiving harvest every first Sunday in June.
And so, last Sunday was a special day for children of the church founded by the late Samuel Bilehou Joseph Oshoffa. Although the order of service for that day usually would not change, all the activities would be carried out by children.

Usually, each parish comes up with its own theme, which would also be used for their adult harvest later in the year.

SCRIPTURAL FOUNDATIONS OF THE CELESTIAL MODE OF WORSHIP BY

Hon. Evangelist Imonitie C. Imoisili, Ph. D.

1. Introduction

As the name implies, the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC for short) is a heavenly church brought down to earth. This is well captured in YHN 79 (EHN 10) as follows:

Worship ye the Lord in this holy church

It is a holy church from our Heavenly Father

We pray the Lord come to redeem us sinners

And count us amongst Thy chosen ones

Paragraph 94 of the Second Schedule of the CCC Constitution asserts that “all forms of worship in the Celestial Church of Christ are entirely as revealed by the Holy Spirit. This includes the setting of the altar and the seats therein, the number of candles used for the various types of services and the seating arrangement” (p. 30).

The founder of the CCC, Samuel B.J. Oshoffa, was born in 1909 in Porto Novo, Dahomey (now the Republic of Benin) of a Nigerian mother and a Dahomean father. His father, a Methodist, had many wives in his desperate search for a son. None came. He then prayed that if God would give him a son, he would dedicate him to His service, just as Hannah did [1 Sam. 1:10-11]. His prayer was answered and the son was named Samuel.

After his father’s death, the young Samuel took to his business as a carpenter. He would go into the forest to buy ebony and bring to town to sell to other carpenters. Each time he went into the forest, he would carry a Bible, which he read avidly. It was on one of such journeys, on the day of the eclipse of the sun (23rd May 1947), that he heard a voice. In his own words, “The voice I heard was ‘LULI,’ and the same voice told me ‘this means the Grace of Jesus Christ.’ When I opened my eyes, I saw a white monkey with two teeth each top and bottom with winged hands and feet like those of a bat. When it wants to fly, it flaps its wings forward. But it was stationary.” [CCC Constitution, Par. 16, p. 5]

He spent three months in the wilderness receiving more instructions, living on honey and water from a nearby flowing stream. In his words, “I felt no fear and I had no illness but basked in the glory of Jesus Christ” (p. 6). On 29th September 1947, while he was praying in his house with visitors and friends, he saw a winged creature “whose body was like fire and whose eyes were tiny flying towards me behind the beam of light” (p. 7). The being informed him that God was sending him on an errand of preaching to the world. To prepare him for the new ministry, he would work miraculous works of divine healing in the name of Jesus Christ. Numerous miracles, including raising the dead, followed.

In 1951, Oshoffa moved to Makoko, Lagos, Nigeria. It was there, soon after the 1954 Makoko Harvest Thanksgiving Service that Jesus Christ Himself appeared to him and confirmed, “All your services of worship in the church are acceptable unto the Father” (p.19)

Unless such claims can be verified from a reliable source, they remain mere assertions, which can be embellished by fanatical adherents or rejected by skeptics. The Scripture, the Word of God as recorded in the Holy Bible, is the only credible source that God has made available to Christians [Deut. 29:29]. In deed, for any church that professes the name of Jesus, its doctrine can be tested against the Scripture for the following reasons, among others:

Ø Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith [Heb. 12:2]

Ø The Law of Moses, the prophets and the Psalms are mainly about Jesus and He is their fulfillment [Luke 24:44]

Ø Jesus came in flesh to fulfill the Old Testament [Matt. 5:17] and to prepare us for His Second Coming as King and Judge [Matt. 25:31-46;Jn 5:22]. That is why Jesus Himself has told us that the Scripture cannot be broken [Jn 10:35]

Ø No man can lay any other foundation beyond what Jesus has done [1 Cor. 3:11]. The Scripture is a documentation of that.

Ø Finally, all Scripture is given by the inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction and for instruction in righteousness [2 Tim. 3:16].

Within the available time, we cannot cover every aspect of the CCC mode of worship. Therefore, I intend to highlight the most obvious (but greatly misunderstood) aspects, such as:

(a) The structure of the church

(b) The mode of dress

(c) The items used for worship

(d) A typical worship service (Sunday)

Purpose of Presentation

(a) At Bethel, Jacob woke up and said, “God is in this place and yet I did not know it” [Gen. 28:16]. After this presentation, it is my hope that worshippers will wake up from their ignorance and lukewarmness to realize the power of God in this church.

(b) A full grasp of the scriptural foundation of the CCC mode of worship will build self-confidence and greater faith by Celestians, especially when sharing and fellowshipping with other Christians.

(c) The CCC is a God-fearing church, not a user-friendly one. The new knowledge will assist erring members to return to the path of reverence for God and true worship. This is well captured in YHN 54:

Worship, worship the Lord our God

Worship, worship the Lord our God

Our only Father

May the Lord show the world Heaven’s glory

That the whole world may all be trembling

Under this great power. Amen

The Scriptural Foundations of the CCC

On Friday, 5th October 1947, in the wilderness, a prophetess under the influence of the Holy Spirit used oranges to sketch the seating arrangement in the CCC (see the CCC Constitution, p.30). Other revelations (such as those through Mawunyon, the first anointed prophet of the church-see p. 25 of the Constitution) followed. By the time the church was five years old, the following features of its structure and practices had been revealed:

(a) There is an altar area surrounded by seats for church elders. On the altar is a candleholder with 7 stands. The altar is located to the East.

(b) The choir stand is to the right of the altar area.

(c) The rest of the church is arrayed such that females sit on the left (North) and the males on the right (South).

(d) There are entrances from the West, South and North in the area outside of the altar zone.

(e) Worshippers wear white garments (soutana) but are not allowed to wear shoes when in their soutanas and inside the church.

(f) Incense, candles, holy water, palm fronds and perfumes are used in worship and rituals.

(g) Worshippers pray with their heads bowed to the ground.

The similarity in structure with the one shown to Moses and built by Solomon is obvious [Ex. 25:8; Heb. 9:1-10]. The CCC temple faces the East, the direction of Jerusalem. In Scripture, God commanded Ezekiel to “set thy face toward Jerusalem and drop thy word toward the holy places” [Ezek. 21:2]. Daniel [Dan. 6:10] and Jonah [Jon. 2:4] are known to look toward the holy temple in Jerusalem when they prayed. Recall that God had promised Solomon that all prayers offered in that temple will be answered because His eyes and ears will be there “perpetually” [2 Chron. 7:12-16]. Even till date, the Jews still go to the Wailing Wall, the relic of the temple, to pray when they are in desperate need. However, as Jesus has said, as long as you worship God in spirit and in truth, where you face or where you go may not be relevant [Jn 4:21-24]. But, once God commands you to do something in a particular way, the general rule no longer applies. That is why Jesus Christ has said, “whosoever shall do the will of God the same is My brother and My sister, and mother” [Mk 2:35].

Those on holy ground are forbidden by God to wear shoes, as we have seen in the cases of Moses [Ex. 3:5] and Joshua [Josh. 5:15]. The white garment is a symbol of the redeemed that are perpetually on holy ground [Rev. 7: 13-17]. It is, therefore, not surprising that God has commanded Celestians in soutana and worshippers inside the church to remove their shoes.

Let us now go into a more detailed analysis of Worship in Heaven, as revealed in the Scripture, in order to see the broader picture of the CCC mode of worship.

Worship in Heaven

The Layout of the Temple (see sketch)

(a) God Himself sits on the throne [Is. 6:1; Rev. 4:2]. In the midst of the throne is the “Lamb [Jesus Christ] as if it had been slain” with seven horns and seven eyes “which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth” [Rev. 5:6; see also Zech. 4:10]. The 7 Spirits of God are listed in relation to the “Branch” from the “stem of Jesse” [Jesus Christ] as follows [Is.11: 1-2]:

i. The Spirit of the Lord

ii. The Spirit of Wisdom

iii. The Spirit of Understanding

iv. The Spirit of Counsel

v. The Spirit of Might

vi. The Spirit of Knowledge

vii. The Fear of the Lord

(b) There is a golden altar before the throne [Rev. 8:3]. Seven lamps of fire are burning before the throne “which are the seven Spirits of God”[Rev. 4:5]. Since the 7 angels standing before the throne got the fire for the incense from the altar before the throne [Rev. 8:5], it can safely be assumed that the 7 lamps of fire are on the golden altar. Since they also are the seven Spirits of God, the seven lamps signify the presence of Jesus Christ on the golden altar as well as on the throne.

(c) Four Living Creatures, the Cherubim [Ezek. 1:5-14] and the Seraphim [Is. 6:2; Rev. 4:8], are in the midst of and round about the throne. They are the leading praise singers [Is. 6:3; Rev. 4:8].

(d) There is a rainbow around the throne [Ezek. 1:28; Rev. 4:3]. Could this be to remind God of His everlasting covenant with Noah not to again destroy mankind by flood [Gen. 9:8-16]?

(e) Round about the throne are 24 seats on which are sitting 24 elders clothed in white robes with crowns of gold on their heads [Rev. 4:4].

(f) The congregation consists of angels and an uncountable multitude of saints from every race and nationality all arrayed in white robes and carrying palms in their hands [Rev. 7:1-9].

The Worship ‘Service’

(a) The Cherubim and the Seraphim lead off the adoration and worship with “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of Hosts” [Is. 6:3] or “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty”[[Rev. 4:8]. Other frequently heard words are “Alleluia”, “Praise our God”, and “Amen” [Rev. 19:1-6]. As soon as the Cherubim and the Seraphim raise their praise, the 24 elders fall on their faces, casting their crowns before the throne, and worship God [Rev. 4:10; Rev. 19:4], with songs in honor of God [Rev. 4:11] and Jesus Christ [Rev. 5:12-13].

(b) Much incense is offered with the prayers of the saints upon the golden altar before the throne [Rev. 5:8; Rev. 8: 8-9]. Incense is also regarded as “the prayers of the saints” [Rev. 5:8]. I wonder what they are praying for? Certainly not for themselves because they are already spirit beings. Maybe they are praying for us on earth.

(c) The worship goes on interminably [Rev. 4:11; Rev. 7:15]. It is so awesome a sight that Isaiah broke down spontaneously, confessing his sins [Is. 6:5] and John did not know when he knelt before an angel—twice! [Rev. 19: 10; Rev. 22:8].

Implications for Worship on Earth

The following remarkable pairings should be noted:

¨ The throne and the altar

¨ The Lamb and the 7 Lamp Stands

¨ Prayers and incense

¨ Cherubim/Seraphim and the choir

¨ Elders/saints and true worshippers

God Almighty and the Lamb are on the throne but the 7 lamp stands are on the altar. Remember that they also represent the 7 Spirits of God, which are on Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God. Therefore, the altar is a visible image of the throne [Ex. 20:24] and Jesus Christ is present on the altar when the 7 lamp stands are burning.

The incense goes with the prayers of the saints [Rev. 8:4]. At the same time, incense is called the prayers of the saints [Rev. 5:8]. Therefore, incense is a visible image of efficacious prayers [Ex. 30:7-10].

All the worshippers that are saints (i.e., human beings who came from the earth) wear white garments. Believers who had survived great tribulation and are now washed in the blood of the Lamb [Rev. 7:14] wear the garment. Therefore, the white garment is a visible image of redemption and the righteousness of believers [Rev. 19:8].

The pattern of the temple and mode of worship given to Moses by God are in consonance with heavenly worship [Ex. 25: 8; Heb. 9:1-10]. The major differences since Christ’s earthly mission are as follows:

¨ Instead of animal sacrifices, the Lamb “slain from the foundation of the world” [Rev. 13:8] is on the throne. The New Covenant has substituted the Holy Communion, instituted by Christ Himself, in place of animal sacrifice [Lk 22:17-20; 1 Cor. 11:23-25].

¨ The veil covering the Holy of Holies has been torn, with Christ’s sacrificial death on the Cross. So, there is now a sea of glass (which is very transparent) between the throne and the rest of the temple.

If we were to move this church in Heaven down to earth this moment, here is what we would see:

¨ The throne and the angels would be invisible to our naked eyes

¨ We would see the altar with the 7 lamp stands on it

¨ The whole church would be full of smoke from the incense

¨ The worshippers would all be in white garments

¨ When prayers were called, the worshippers would all fall on their faces bowing towards the altar on which would be the 7 lamp stands

That is the Celestial Church of Christ for you! In place of the golden crowns, the elders attach golden frills to their loins. This is because male worshippers on earth are enjoined not to cover their heads during worship [1 Cor. 11:4].

Being representative of God’s throne, the altar can be considered sanctified (i.e., set apart as holy). Whatever touches a sanctified altar is considered sanctified [Ex. 29:37]. Under the Old Covenant, inanimate objects (such as the tabernacle and its decorations) were sanctified and in turn imparted sanctification to whoever touched them [Ex. 30:29; Matt. 23:17-22]. That was why God stayed the plague on the Israelites when Aaron burnt incense from the altar [Num. 17:42-48]. In the New Testament, handkerchiefs and aprons worn by Paul, a sanctified man of God who worshipped in the synagogue, were put on the sick who then became well [Acts 19:11-12]. Any object can be so sanctified as the Holy Spirit wills. Therefore, oil, perfumes, palm fronds, candles, crosses, incense, water, loins, handkerchiefs and any other objects used in the CCC, as long as they are directed by the Holy Spirit, are considered sanctified by God.

A Typical Sunday in the CCC

There are over 20 services conducted in the CCC, grouped into daily (Morning Service at 5.30 am), weekly (Sunday at 10.00 am, Wednesday & Friday at 6.00 am, Prophet’s Service on Thursday at 7.00 pm or Friday after Power Day Service, Service for those seeking God’s mercy, Wednesday at 9.30 am, Service for Pregnant Women, Friday at 3.00 pm), monthly (New Moon Service), annual (Passion Week, Washing of Feet on Holy Thursday, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost, Blessed Virgin Mary Day, 1st Friday of July, Christmas Service, End of Year Service, 31 December from 10.00 pm) and occasional (Marriage, Naming Ceremony, Burial Service, Baptism, Amissa, Foundation Laying, House/Church Dedication). Holy Communion is administered quarterly and at Christmas, End of Year, Holy Thursday and Marriage Services, etc. (see p.31 of the CCC Constitution).

However, the structure of all the services is fairly standard:

Procession→ Adoration →Confession of Sins → Thanks → Intercessory Prayers → Sermon → Thanks offering → Blessing → Grace → Recession

I have chosen the 10.00 am Sunday Service for illustration because it is the longest and most comprehensive.

(a) The Procession

Just as Isaiah [Is. 6:1-2] and Ezekiel [Ezek. 1:4-28] had the privilege to see the Procession of God, the CCC service begins with a similar one. Worshippers form very disciplined and awe-inspiring lines, all arrayed in soutana and some in outer robes in accordance with their church-given ranks. The choir leads, followed by the lower ranks of children (female and male), elders (female and male) and the seniors (female, then male), etc. The hymn captures the essence of what is happening in the spiritual realm:

Jerih Moh Yamah (2ice)

The host of angels full of joy in Heaven

The host of angels (2ice)

They are praising God with joyful songs in Heaven

Soon, the elder with the incense burner approaches the altar to light the 7 candles, which represent the seven Spirits of God [Is. 11:2]. Then, the choir, representing the Cherubim and Seraphim [Is. 6:3; Rev. 4:8], followed by the whole congregation, sings:

Yah Rah Sah Rah

Yah Rah Sah Mattah [2ice]

Kindle the Light

Divine from Heaven above [2ice]

This hymn was descended through Mawunyon who saw in Heaven a pot of incense being swung accompanied by the above song [CCC Constitution, Par. 83, p. 25]. The elder who has lit the 7 candles on the High Altar passes a lit candle to another elder to put at the West entrance of the church, a heavenly practice that you will find in Ezek. 10:7.

Recall that the 7-lit candles represent the arrival of Jesus Christ on the altar [Rev. 4:7; Rev. 5:6]. Therefore, as soon as the candles are lit, the worshippers go down on their knees and sing three times:

Yah Ramah Ih Yah Ramah [2ice]

Oh come unto the Lord [2ice]

The jingling of the bell three times follows that. Each time, the worshippers say, with their faces to the ground:

Holy, Holy, Holy to the Lord God of Hosts

[Is. 6:3; Rev. 4:8] followed by the singing of

Oh Christ my King

I will worship Thee

My Power and my Light

Thou Most Holy, Holy, Holy

[3 times]

Now, you can see how important it is to come to church on time, and certainly before the jingling of the bell. Why should you arrive after the dignitary (Jesus Christ) and His entourage are already seated? It is disrespectful [Habakkuk 2:20; Zech. 2:13]

(b) Confession/Sanctification

Like Isaiah [Is. 6:5], the congregation is led by the service conductor to confess their sins, beginning with Psalm 51, and to pray for sanctification, beginning with Psalm 24 (the use of psalms in worship and in the church is well documented in Scripture [2 Chron. 29: 30-31; Ps. 95: 2; 1 Cor. 14: 26; James 5:13]). A song of forgiveness follows. This pattern is consonant with God’s requirement [Is. 1:16-18; 1 Jn 1:8-9].

(c) Thanks

Paul says that we should with thanksgiving make our requests known to God [Phil. 4:6]. The Psalmist asks us to offer thanksgiving to God so that He may answer us in the day of trouble [Ps. 50:14-15]. That is what the congregation does next with Psalm 118, followed by a prayer and song of thanks.

(d) Intercessory Prayers

In 1 Tim. 2: 1-3, Paul has laid down the principles of public worship as follows: “I exhort, therefore, that first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks, be made for all men, for kings and for all that are in authority.”

In the CCC, intercessory prayers begin with “Three Members’ Prayers”, preceded by the service conductor reading the royal Psalm 72. A male elder prays for “Spiritual Power and Progress.” A female elder follows with prayer for “Victory and Protection” for the congregation and the nation and its leaders. A male elder leads the third prayer for “Blessing and God’s Favor”. Then, a song for the power of the Holy Spirit is rendered.

The last part of intercessory prayers is called “Silent Prayer” [cf.: 1 Sam. 1:13] where each individual worshipper is given the opportunity to make his/her personal prayer requests directly to God. A prayer of agreement is led by the service conductor [cf.: 1 Sam. 1:17], preceded by reading Psalm 20. A song of praise rounds up this section of the worship.

(e) The Word

Faith comes by hearing the Word of God [Rom. 10:17]. Two readings, one from the Old Testament and a related one from the New Testament are made. Two songs (stressing Evangelism and Faith respectively) are rendered in-between the two readings and the announcement before the sermon.

Praying the Apostles’ Creed precedes the sermon. 1 Jn 4:1-3 enjoins us to test the spirits. The true spirit accepts that Jesus came in flesh. The Creed contains that affirmation. Therefore, praying it before the sermon is to ensure that the Spirit of God guides both the preacher and his listeners.

(f) Thanks offering

First, several collections are taken (such as offering, building fund, tithe, etc.). This is followed by thanks offering. The emphasis is on cheerful giving [2 Cor. 9:7].

Like Solomon and his congregation of old [1 Kgs 8:65-66], Celestians enjoy offering thanks to God. They sing and dance cheerfully. There can be several rounds of offerings by groups and individuals who want to thank God for His deeds or promises to them. Items used include worship items (such as incense, candles and perfumes) or consumables (such as sugar, salt, fruits, etc), as the Holy Spirit leads them.

(g) Blessing and the Grace

The 7th worship song is on blessing or promise. Then, a closing prayer is led by a female highest in rank, followed by the Grace [2 Cor. 13:14], said by the Shepherd (leader) of the Parish, or the male highest in rank.

(h) Recession

The recessional hymn as well as the order of departure is the same as the processional discussed earlier. The service conductor leads the prayer and gives the grace. Then, just as Joshua and his troops shouted to bring down the walls of Jericho [Josh. 6:20], the whole congregation chants 7 Alleluias to the 4 corners of the world in the following order: East-West-South-North [cf.: Ps. 75:6]

Some frequently used words during worship

In the box below, I have provided scriptural references, where available for some of the popular words used during worship. Here, I want to specifically address the use of Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael to prefix every prayer.

In civil society, there is what is called “protocol.” When you make a speech, there is an introductory part, which is not part of the speech. But, if you don’t begin with it, you are considered rude. We begin with the highest in rank in the audience and round up with “Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen.” Thereafter, you go into your prepared speech. During that occasion, every speaker repeats the protocol, even if in varying degrees! Do we have a spiritual equivalent? After all, a prayer is a speech to God.

In the CCC, the Holy Spirit has revealed that the spiritual protocol during CCC worship consists of “Jehovah, Jesus Christ and Holy Michael.” There is strong scriptural support for this:

(a) Jesus Christ Himself says that “whosoever shall be ashamed of Me and of My words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed when He shall come in His own glory and in His Father’s and of the holy angels” [Lk 9:26].

(b) Talking of His return, Jesus says “but of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son but the Father” [Mk 13:32].

(c) The risen Christ who appeared to Apostle John in the island of Patmos says, “He that overcometh the same shall be clothed in white raiment and I will not blot his name out of the book of life but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels” [Rev. 3:5].

(d) Paul writes to Timothy, “I charge thee before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels…” [1 Tim. 5:21]. The elect angels, also called archangels are Michael, leader of the warring angels [Dan. 10:10-21; Dan. 12:1; Rev. 12:7], Gabriel, head of the messengers [Dan. 9:21;Lk 1: 11-38], Raphael, head of the helpers [Tobit 3:17], and Uriel, head of the angels that minister understanding to believers [2 Esdras 4:1] {Tobit and Esdras are among the Apocrypha books included in the Roman Catholic Bible}.

(e) Just as every human being has a guardian angel [Matt. 18:10], so does every church have an assigned angel [Rev. 2: 1, 8, 12, 18]. As a warring church, the guardian angel of the CCC is Michael.

Just as a speaker is able to use an introductory protocol to draw his audience’s attention, a worshipper can draw God’s attention by using a spiritual protocol. Blind Bartimaeus drew the attention of Jesus, in spite of the great noise, when he addressed Him as “Son of David” [Mk 10:47-49].

THE CELESTIAL CHURCH OF CHRIST TENETS
Lecture Delivered by Rev. A. A. Bada, Supreme Head, Celestial Church of Christ Worldwide at Celestial Church of Christ National Headquarters, Makoko, Lagos Under the Auspices of the Bible Class on 4th April, 1987.
It gives me a great pleasure to be here today to share with you what I know and I find necessary for you to know to enable you to share it with fellow Celestians so that a good knowledge of what we have and hold tenaciously to the tenets of Celestial Church of Christ may make us stand firm in the face of wrong perverted teachings which abound around us. "Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make thee free".
PREAMBLES:
Celestial Church of Christ tenets may mean many things to many People. To me, the tenets are divine in origin and grounded in the scriptures. Tenets: it should be noted are not peculiar to Celestial Church of Christ but when one practices what is not Pedestals, one is open to suspicion and even, attack from other groups. It may be necessary at this juncture to find a simpler meaning of expression of tenets. Tenets, according to Oxford Advanced Leaner's Dictionary of Current English means: Principle; belief; doctrine. And if we break one of the above definitions, doctrine, into smaller words, we have the following also in Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary Of Current English: Body of teaching; belief and teachings of a church, political party, school of scientists. I say therefore, that what I do know about the beliefs and teachings of Celestial Church of Christ and want to share with you is that not only did the Celestial Church of Christ tenets come through divine revelations to our beloved Saint S.B.J. Oshoffa, the Prophet, Pastor, and founder of the Church, but also have their basis in the Bible. In short, the Celestial Church of Christ tenets are mostly part of God's statutes given to our forebears with the definitive term that they should be kept from generation to generation.
It is lack of understanding of the scriptures that make many people think that Celestial Church of Christ tenets art either peculiar or the thoughts of a clever mind, or even the rationalization of a philosopher-religionist. Our beloved Pastor, Founder, my father in Christ, saint S.B.J. Oshoffa was but a carpenter whom it pleased God Almighty to elect for the establishment of Celestial Church of Christ with tenets divinely dictated, So far for the preamble.
TENETS:
My term of reference - Celestial Church of Christ tenets - has a very wide scope which I am afraid cannot be adequately covered within the period of a lecture of this nature. I shall endeavor in this lecture to highlight only the salient ones that are easily misconstrued.
1. ADMISSION into membership of Celestial Church of Christ:

There are no preconditions for admitting any willing person into the membership of Celestial Church of Christ. However some steps need be taken to ensure a clean break between the old and the new system of life. Our Lord said to Nicodemus in John 3:3-5, "No one can enter the Kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit". There are three vital step: Sanctification, baptism, anointment.
(a) i. Sanctification:

Sanctification is the first rite a prospective member of the Church should undergo. Sanctification in Celestial Church of Christ falls into three categories. The first one is for new members to remove their filth and stain of darkness in consonance, with the words of God in Ezekiel 36:25-30, 11:17-20; Exod. 19:10-22; Lev. 10:3. As Adam was driven out of Eden, because of sin, there was also the restoration of the second Adam through Sanctification into new Jerusalem in Christ Jesus. Hence the hymn given to Celestial Church of Christ, a hymn of invitation to a rebirth: 'Jesu lo npe o tantan, ma bo, elese wa' etc.
After sanctification the new member is numbered among the children of promise in the new faith in Christ Jesus. Materials used for sanctification are spirit-in-word, water, and fire.
In this first case, the following are needed: water, sponge, soap and a stick of candle which when lit is symbolic of the spirit of God like tongue of fire which descended on the first apostles to sanctify them on the day of Pentecost - Act. 2:1-4. Following immediately the sanctification of a member is the sanctification of the person's place of abode. A clean man remains clean if he resides in a clean environment; a clean man in a filthy environment is unclean since man is a product of his environment. Acts 19:18-19 supports the essence of ridding a house of all acts that are not related to the spirit of God whenever one starts a new life in Christ Jesus.
ii. Purification:

The second category of sanctification practiced in Celestial Church of Christ is the purification exercise that a woman undergoes after her monthly period, and after giving birth to a child. This is very important and God does not take it lightly. Lev. 12, Lev. 15:16-18; 15:19-24; 29-30. Many people discountenance it but Christ established it beyond reasonable doubt: Mark 5:25-34. The weight of the impurity was so much felt by Jesus Christ that he could not resist asking who touched him. The Apostles-also warned the Antioch converts to steer clear of 'blood' Acts 15:29.
iii. Consecration:

The third category of sanctification is consecration into priesthood as it is explained in Exod. 40:12-15. It should be noted that in Celestial Church of Christ, candle is used to replace lamb, goat, sheep prescribed in the scriptures Prov. 20:27.
b. Baptism

A prospective member may be presented for the rite of baptism only after he has participated in the worship and adhered to the rules of the church for 12 months Acts 11:26. That length of time is for the person to examine the doctrine and the mode of worship thoroughly before taking the plunge. Baptism therefore is the first rite performed to admit formally a worshiper into full membership of the church after which such a member becomes spiritually equipped and elevated to partake of holy communion and join other members of the church in spiritual works according to the prompting of the holy spirit. Baptism in Celestial Church of Christ follows the immersion pattern, the type which Christ our Lord underwent in Jordan through the hand of John the Baptist - Matt. 3:13-17.
c. Anointment:

A member is not considered ripe for the rite of anointment in Celestial Church of Christ until such a person has steadily worshipped in the Church for three years, two years after baptism. Exod. 30:30-33. By the time a member is being presented for anointment, there should be adequate evidence that such a person is a committed Christian worshipping in Celestial Church of Christ. Saul otherwise known as the Apostle Paul was for several years referred to as "Brother" until he and Barnabas were formally commissioned to proceed on a missionary journey - Acts 9:17; 13:15.
2. FESTIVALS:
In consonance with one of the statutes of God to mankind Exod. 23:14, Celestial Church of Christ tenet gives prominence to three festivals: Christmas, (the birth of Christ at the end of the year); Easter (Palm Sunday, passion week featuring washing of feet, holy communion: and Christ's resurrection); and Harvest.
i. Christmas:

God in his infinite mercy is ever looking for ways of reconciling man to himself. It was on this mission of reconciliation that Jesus Christ the only begotten son of God volunteered to go. Christ took it upon himself, put his glory in heaven aside and came, into the world to save mankind. And when He came, He became the chief priest and king. No wonder the rite of anointment coincides with Christmas festivities and more precisely falls on December 25th every year, the day which is throughout Christendom universally accepted as the day on which Christ was born. For by anointment, in Jesus Christ, a member of Celestial Church of Christ is made a priest unto the Lord and a king to reign over the earth. Rev. 5:9-10.
The world Congregation of Celestial Church of Christ assembles annually on 24 December at an appointed place as directed by the Lord Himself through our Pastor and founder, Saint S.B.J. Oshoffa to celebrate. It is an event in Celestial Church of Christ which every committed member looks forward to with fervor.
ii. Easter:

To Celestians, this is celebrated in remembrance of the Exodus, the time of the deliverance of the Israelites from Egyptian bo***ge as it is also the time the deliverance of God comes through our Lord Jesus Christ to humanity. Exodus 13:1-4; 34:18. The significance is that the Passion Week marks the time when the only begotten son of God surrendered his life an atonement for the sins of the world. (Jesus Christ is often referred to as the firstborn of the father) Heb. 1:6. The Passion Week (Palm Sunday night to Holy Saturday) is an eventful week for all Celestians, the only week when it is statutory for Celestians to fast. On Palm Sunday, Christendom proclaims the kingship of Jesus Christ. This is otherwise known as the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem Zech. 9:9-10; Lk. 19:32-38; Matt. 21:5-9; Mk. 11:1-10; John 12:12-15. One of the events - washing of feet takes place on Holy Thursday.
The rite of washing of feet in Celestial Church of Christ has a great significance. By the rite, it is believed that the eternal curse Gen. 3:15 on the descendants of Adam is removed, John 13:8. All the signs of the curse should be washed off before one can enter the Kingdom of God.

Here is the story of one Senior Elder Olowoloba a member of Celestial Church of Christ at Arepo Village in the sixties. For about three years consecutively, he and the entire parish missed the service of washing of feet. He became seriously ill to the point of death. In a state of comma he saw a very long white ship into which Celestians were filing. tie hurriedly put on his sutana and ran to the ship only to discover that there was a roll call. At the end of the roll call, he did not hear his name. He moved near and protested since he too was a Celestian. He was asked to show a sign that he was truly a Celestian. They looked thoroughly at his feet and saw no mark; he was then asked to run back to Makoko, get his feet washed before he could qualify to enter the ship. When he came round, he gathered himself up and with all his family and the church members came to Makoko where the service of washing of feet was coincidentally in progress. He narrated his experience, washed his feet, and all the members of his family and members washed their feet too. Eventually he got well soon after; but he died the same year.
A full service and administration of Holy Communion follow washing of feet on Holy Thursday evening. Mark 14:22-26; Lk. 22:14-20; 1 Corin. 11:23-32. Our Lord Jesus Christ said, "Blessed are ye if know these things and do them" John 13:17. Again he said, "This do in remembrance of me "Lk. 22:19. It has become statutory in Celestial Church of Christ worldwide to administer Holy Communion on quarterly basis - three monthly exercises.
HARVEST:

God ordained the feast of harvest. In obeying this statute of God and to enhance the fulfilment of God's design for his children, all Celestians - children and adults - observe the festival of harvest as it is recorded in Exod. 23:16. There are, year in year out, evidences, and testimonies abound that the observance of this festival brings in its trail the blessing enumerated in Exod. 23:25-30.
3. WORSHIP:
Worship is given a prime of place in the doctrine of Celestial Church of Christ. "Then the Lord said Unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh and tell him, Thus said the Lord God of the Hebrews, let my people go, that they may serve/worship me" Exod. 9:1. It is important to note that what God primarily demands from his people and from generation to generation is "serve/worship the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy might." "And ye shall serve the Lord your God, and
he shall bless thy bread etc". Exod. 23:25. The service or worship of God is a strong deciding factor to show who belongs to him and who do not. Malachi 3:14:18. The prime of place given worship in Celestial Church of Christ is reflected both in its frequency, mode, and intensity. It is right to say that we observe three-hourly time of prayer 6 a.m., 9am., 12 noon, 3 p.m., 6 p.m., 9 p.m., 12 midnight (psalm 119:164).
Daily - 5.30 am. Morning devotion; 9 p.m. Evening devotion.
Wednesday - 9 am. - Special service for barren women and those who seek job. 6 pm. – Worship
Friday - 12 noon 3 pm. special service for prophets, dreamers et 3 pm. special service for pregnant women 6 p.m. worship.
Sunday 10 am. – Worship; 6 pm. - Worship.
First Thursday of the month - 12 midnight - New Noon Service Ezekiel 46:1-6.
The new moon service is as important as the Sunday worship. It is a service that is loaded with meaningful action of reverence and adoration. The shepherd and the whole congregation in unison lift up their hand (acknowledging the sovereignty of God), then bow down, and finally kneel down with face to the ground, the forehead touching the ground. Nehemiah 8:6. The worship is conducted in absolute lowliness before God. There is no sitting on chairs or benches. There is intense use of incense and perfume.
And, at other services, our act of worship is in kneeling with face to the ground touching the ground with our forehead when the bell tolls three times and we chorus in unison, "Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God of Hosts” Isaiah 6:3; Rev. 4:8.
NOTE:
For Wednesday 9 am. Special service for barren women, participants would have one candle, one bottle of water, three different types of fruits like pawpaw, orange, mango, banana, coconut etc. After a short service they are placed before the Lord with fruits, bottle of water and the lit candle placed a little distance from the head and covered with alter cloth and sanctified water is sprinkled on them. When each of them wakes up, she takes and eats one type of fruit and the bottle of water.
For Friday 12 noon - 3 p.m. special service for prophets, dreamers and those seeking the power of the holy spirit, participants would have one candle and a bottle of water. After the service, they are placed before the Lord and covered with alter cloth. They take their water when they wake up.
For Friday 3 p.m. Spiritual prenatal clinic for pregnant women, participants would have one candle and a bottle of water. After service and prayer for safe delivery, they are placed before the Lord and covered with altar cloth. They take their water when they wake up.
It will be reasonable and useful to direct our attention to the following aspects relating to our worship:
i. Falling on our faces, worshipping God - Rev. 14:6; II Chron. 20:18; Exod. 34:6-8; Matt. 26:39; Rev. 7:11; Rev. 11:16; 4:10.
ii. Gates of our church open continually - Isaiah 60:11-12; Rev. 7:15.
iii. Altar lamp burns continually - Lev. 24:1-2; Exod. 27:20
iv. Candlestick (seven pronged) - Exod.25:31-37; Heb.9:2 Rev. 1:12; 4:5
v. Table of the Altar - Exod. 25:23; Heb.9:1-3
vi. Communion box - Heb. 9:4
vii. Burning of incense Rev. 8:1-4; Mark 16:1 Lk. 1:9-10; Lk.23: 55-56; Matt 2:11; Exod. 30:34-38.
ii. Use of sanctified oil - James 5:14-l5; Mark 6:13
ix. Walking barefoot and not wearing cap in the Church - Exod. 3:4-6; Rev. 1:14; 1:15
x. Loins (Girdle) - Acts 12:8; John 13:4-5; Jer. 1:17
xi. White Garment - Matt. 28:2-3; Rev. 6:9-11
xii. Garment for worshippers and priests - Exod. 39:22-29.
From the above, it can be concluded that most of our practices which relate to our worship in Celestial Church of Christ are dictates from the Lord as directly in the Bible. And John in Rev. 1:1-3 did not mince words that he was given the revelation
in order to show God's chosen people what must happen very soon. Christ made these things known to John by sending his angel to him and he had told all that he had seen. "Happy are those who obey what is written in this Book": i.e. the book of Revelation. It is evident that Celestial Church of Christ is the fulfillment of the-vision of John in the scene described in Rev. 7:9-17.
4. RELIGIOUS OBLIGATIONS:
Our religious obligations in our church are many and varied. The principal ones which God does not play with are thanks offering, and tithes.
Thanks offering and tithes take a prominent place in our worship in Celestial Church of Christ. The significance of these in our life is well explained in Malachi 3:6-12. Doing it is blessings and not doing it is curse. Psalm 100:1-5 relates the message loud and clear. It is the bounding duty of those who are saved to "serve the Lord in gladness" and "come to his presence with singing". It is appropriate to enter His gates with thanksgiving to acknowledge "that the Lord, He is God; it is He that hath made us and not we ourselves”.
Of equal importance are alms, and freewill offering which is popularly known as collections 1 Corin. 16:1-3. These are sacrifices that are lifted up for blessings. It is from part of those four types of offerings: thanks offering, tithes, alms, and freewill offering called collections that the workers receive their stipend.
5. ORDINANCES:
In Celestial Church of Christ, all the laws given to Moses and the prophets are strictly adhered to. Malachi 4:4; Exod. 20:1-20 Matt. 5:17-20. Since repetition is a fixing device, the mosaic laws and Celestial Church of Christ ordinances are brought into announcements every worship day. Our ordinances are categorized for ease of reference viz Food, Drink, Morality, Discipline, and Ritual Cleanliness.
Food:

It is forbidden in Celestial Church of Christ to eat Pork; Crawling animals like snake, snail, and species of fish that have no scale. Eating blood is also forbidden Lev. 3:17; Gen.9:4-5; Deut. 12:15-16; 23-25.
Drinks:

It is forbidden in Celestial Church of Christ to take alcohol or wine Lk. 1:15; Number 6:1-4. It is also forbidden to smoke cigarette or s***f to***co.
Morality

Adultery or fornication in any form is totally forbidden. It is forbidden for a man to hug a woman or stay too close chest to chest to a woman 1 Corin. 7:1-2; Rev. 21:8.
Discipline:

It is forbidden in Celestial Church of Christ
For women to leave their head uncovered I Corin. 11:5-6; 10
For men and women to wear transparent dress or use transparent material to sew their sutana;
For women to mount the pulpit to deliver sermon or lead congregational worships 1 Tim. 2:11-12;
For women to adorn their lips or nails (foot or finger) 1 Peter 3; 1 Tim. 2;
For men to allow their hair to be too long 1 Corin. 11:14; for male and female members to sit side by side in the temple of God;
For members to merry-go-round at night.
RITUAL CLEANLINESS:

It is forbidden in Celestial Church of Christ
To carry a co**se into the temple of God;
To bury the dead close to the temple;
For women in their monthly period for the first seven days to move near the temple or touch any holy thing
For women after giving birth to children to enter the temple until the time of her purification 40 days after child birth;
To eat anything offered to idols.
There are a few general ones. Members of Celestial Church of Christ are forbidden to wear anything red or black either as underwears or as dresses.
6. SOCIALS:
There are a few vital things that can pass for tenets in our marriage and child-christening ceremonies.
Marriage:

The aspect I want to highlight in our marriage ceremony is that which shows the union not only of the bride and bridegroom but also of the two families - the families of the bride and that of the bridegroom - consummated under the spirit of God. The parents of the bride will hold the hand of their daughter and place it in the hands of the parents of the bridegroom giving their daughter not directly to the bridegroom but to the parents of the bridegroom to be adopted as their own daughter. The parents of the bridegroom will then take the hands of both the bride (their daughter-in-law) and the bridegroom (their son) together and give to the elders of the church who then deliver the hands to the officiating minister for solemnization of matrimony. Held within three pillars - the families of the bride, the families of the bridegroom, and the church elders - the wedlock stands a great chance of lasting.
Child Christening:

On the eighth day, every child born into a Celestian home is christened. For this ceremony the following are needed: seven types of fruits, candles (2 packets), incense, honey, salt, sugar, and water. Seven of the candles, lit, will be in a bowl of water, which will be placed in front of the prophet who carries the child. At the entrance of the temple, the child will be sanctified by the shepherd and the prophet carrying the child with six other members of the congregation will usher the child into the temple dancing. One of the sidesmen will carry the bowl in which seven candles are stuck out of which three are lit while another sidesman will be burning incense to lead the child into the temple. In the process of the service, the spirit of God will descend on the prophet carrying the child to give the child a name. The name given to our Lord came from an angel before he was conceived Luke 2:21.
After sermon and collection, seven elders of the church, four men and three women, will stand round the child who is carried by the prophet. The name given through the holy spirit will be read out after which water, salt, and honey shall be put into the child's mouth with words of blessing from the Leader. This is followed by the reading of Deut. 28:1-14 and prayer from the seven elders. When the service is ended after thanksgiving, the congregation will dance round the child, giving him gifts and taking part of the honey, salt, sugar, and fruits.
At the end of the ceremony in the temple, the child is led into the waiting arm of his mother outside the church just as he was led into the temple.
