Many preachers today love to preach to CROWDS but do not have a deep-seated love for PEOPLE.
It is much easier for a preacher to stand on a rostrum with ten thousand-watt beam of spot lights converging on him, a sleek microphone hanging on his jaw and connected to sophisticated voice-filtering and amplification machines whose output is thunder and give his vocal delivery the acoustic finishing of a demigod’s tone. While his frame is tucked in a translucent electric suit, before a nameless and faceless crowd only good for publicity pictures and statistics. Sometimes his stage craft could be enhanced by the background vocals of an award-winning choir whose mesmerizing melodies would fuse with the grand artistic displays of pyrotechnics; and the whole experience is captured on high-definition cameras and simultaneously transmitted to millions of homes the world over.
Nothing is wrong with preaching to large crowds under God’s direction. But I believe that is the easier part of the job. The real challenge comes when the nameless and faceless crowds begin to change into known names and faces with close-range, real issues that do not require eloquence or healing anointing to be solved but long counseling sessions, pastoral care, altruistic leadership and heartfelt intercession. Sometimes this could mean years of labour on these needy souls.
