TOPIC: LET GOD USE PEOPLE TO SHAPE YOU
Proverbs 27:17; Romans 8:28

One of the hidden ways God develops the duty of your calling is through the people He allows into your life. Many believers assume that every difficult personality or challenging relationship is an obstacle to their progress. Yet in many cases, those individuals are instruments God is using to refine character and maturity. Just as iron sharpens iron, people often shape one another through interaction, correction, and even disagreement. When a believer understands this principle, he stops viewing every uncomfortable situation as an attack and begins to ask what lesson God may be teaching through it.

Sometimes God places you in situations where the behaviour of others exposes weaknesses in your own character. A person who easily loses his temper may find himself working closely with someone who constantly provokes irritation. Instead of immediately asking God to remove that person, it may be wiser to ask whether God is using the situation to address a deeper issue within you. Through such experiences, patience, humility, and self-control are developed. The rough edges of our character are gradually smoothed through the friction of everyday relationships. Just as stones become smooth when they rub against one another, believers are refined through the interactions God allows in their lives.

Therefore, learn to cooperate with the process of character formation. Do not rush to escape every uncomfortable relationship or responsibility. Sometimes the very environment you wish to leave is the workshop where God is shaping you for your calling. If you allow Him to complete His work in your life, the qualities developed through those experiences will strengthen your effectiveness in the future. When your character becomes stable and mature, you will be better prepared to carry the responsibilities connected to your calling and to serve others with wisdom and grace.

THOUGHT TO PONDER: Could God be using certain people or situations in my life to shape my character for my calling? What lessons might He be teaching me through them?

PRAYER: Father, help me recognise the ways You are shaping my life through the people and situations around me. Give me humility and patience to grow through every lesson You are teaching me, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

TOPIC: IMPROVE WHAT YOU SEE IS NOT DONE WELL
Ecclesiastes 9:10; Colossians 3:23

Another important key in discovering the duty of your calling is your response to areas where things are not being done well. In every organisation, ministry, or community, there will always be tasks that require improvement. Some people respond to such situations by complaining or criticising, but those who are growing in their calling respond differently. Instead of merely pointing out the problem, they ask themselves whether God has placed them there to help improve the situation. Sometimes the very area where you notice weaknesses most clearly is the area where your responsibility or calling may be developing.

When God places you in a particular environment, He may be using that environment to shape you through practical involvement. A believer who understands this will not act as an arrogant critic who feels superior to others. Rather, he humbly steps forward to contribute where he can. The purpose is not to gain recognition but to grow in usefulness. Many people overlook these opportunities because they are waiting for a prestigious position or a formal appointment. Yet the Kingdom of God often develops people through simple acts of responsibility that others ignore. By faithfully handling what appears small or ordinary, a believer gradually grows into greater competence and spiritual maturity.

Therefore, pay attention to the areas where you see consistent need for improvement. Instead of merely discussing the problem, consider whether God is prompting you to help address it. Approach such responsibilities with humility and diligence, knowing that every task done faithfully contributes to your development. The duty you embrace today may not be permanent, but the character and skill it produces within you will remain. Through this process, God prepares you for greater assignments and shapes you into someone capable of serving His purpose more effectively.

THOUGHT TO PONDER: When I notice something that is not done well, do I respond with criticism or with willingness to help improve it? Could God be using such situations to develop my calling?

PRAYER: Lord, help me respond to needs with humility and responsibility. Teach me to serve faithfully in every task You place before me, and use those opportunities to shape my life for Your purpose, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

TOPIC: DON’T BE A SPECTATOR IN GOD’S WORK
Hebrews 6:10; James 1:22

One of the greatest mistakes a believer can make is to become a spectator in the work of God. Some people attend church regularly, listen to sermons faithfully, and observe the activities of others, yet they remain passive and uninvolved. They watch what is happening but never truly participate in it. However, the Kingdom of God is not designed for spectators; it is designed for participants. Every believer has a place where he is meant to contribute, serve, and grow. When a person chooses to remain on the sidelines, he not only deprives the work of God of his contribution, but he also limits the development of his own calling.

God never intended His people to sit back and criticise the efforts of others. It is easy to point out what is wrong in a ministry or organisation, but criticism alone does not advance God’s work. Instead, the believer who is serious about his calling asks a different question: “Where can I serve? What need can I help address?” The moment a person shifts from observation to participation, his perspective changes. He begins to appreciate the responsibilities involved in serving God and gains deeper understanding of the work being done. Through such involvement, character is shaped, humility is developed, and spiritual maturity begins to grow.

Therefore, refuse the temptation to remain merely an observer in the Kingdom of God. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you where your contribution is needed and step forward in obedience. The duties you accept today may appear small or unnoticed, but they are often the training ground through which God prepares you for greater responsibilities in the future. When you become a willing participant in God’s work, you position yourself to discover the duty of your calling and to grow into the purpose for which God created you.

THOUGHT TO PONDER: Am I actively participating in the work of God, or have I become a spectator? What step can I take today to contribute meaningfully to God’s Kingdom?

PRAYER: Father, deliver me from a passive attitude toward Your work. Help me become a faithful participant in the responsibilities You have placed before me, and develop my calling through every act of service, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

SPIRIT MEAT DAILY DEVOTIONAL BY REV OLUSOLA AND REV OYENIKE AREOGUN
Saturday, 23rd May 2026

TOPIC: RESPOND TO THE GROANING OF YOUR LEADER
2 Samuel 23:15–16; Hebrews 13:17

Another way God connects a believer to the duty of his calling is through the needs and burdens carried by the leader or ministry God has placed over him. Sometimes the Lord allows you to perceive what your leader is longing for or struggling with—not because you were formally instructed, but because your heart becomes sensitive to it. This was demonstrated in the story of David when he expressed a longing for water from the well of Bethlehem. Although he did not command anyone to get it, three of his mighty men understood the desire of their leader and risked their lives to bring the water to him (2 Samuel 23:15–16). Their response revealed loyalty, sensitivity, and readiness to serve beyond instruction.

In the same way, believers who are developing their calling often become sensitive to the burdens within the work God has connected them to. They listen carefully to what their leaders emphasise, what concerns them, and what they labour over. Instead of criticising or remaining passive observers, they look for ways to help address those needs. Many people attend church or participate in a ministry without truly engaging their hearts in this way. They remain spectators rather than participants in God’s work. Yet the Kingdom of God is not designed for spectators; every believer is meant to contribute actively in some area of service and responsibility.

Therefore, learn to pay attention to the concerns and burdens that arise within the work God has connected you to. What issues are repeatedly mentioned? What responsibilities seem to require greater support? When you respond sincerely to such needs, you are not merely helping a leader—you are allowing God to develop your own calling. Through that process, your heart becomes aligned with the larger purpose of God, and your life gradually grows into greater usefulness in His Kingdom.

THOUGHT TO PONDER: Am I attentive to the burdens and needs within the work God has connected me to? How can I respond in a way that supports and strengthens that work?

PRAYER: Lord, give me a heart that is sensitive to the needs and burdens within Your work. Help me respond faithfully and grow into the responsibilities connected to my calling, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

TOPIC: WHEN GOD PUTS A NEED IN YOUR HEART
Romans 12:8; Nehemiah 2:12

One of the primary ways God begins to connect a believer to the duty of his calling is by placing a need in his heart. Before any official responsibility is given, God often starts by stirring an inner awareness of a need that others may overlook. This inner prompting is not merely emotional sympathy; it is often the Holy Spirit drawing your attention to an area where your calling may be developing. Many people wait until someone formally instructs them to act, but the deeper level of calling begins when God Himself begins to move your heart toward certain needs. When you consistently notice particular needs and feel compelled to respond to them, it may be a signal that God is pointing your life in a specific direction of service.

Sometimes this prompting happens in connection with a leader or ministry that God has placed over your life. As you observe their journey of obedience to God, certain needs connected to that work may begin to impress themselves upon your heart. This does not mean you are trying to impose yourself into someone else’s assignment. Rather, it is an indication that God may be forming something within you through your response to those needs. Many believers fail to recognise these moments because they are too focused on their own personal desires and expectations. Yet when your attention shifts from your own needs to the needs of God’s work and God’s people, you begin to align yourself with the environment where callings are developed.

Therefore, cultivate a heart that is sensitive to what God places within you. If you constantly see a particular need and feel drawn to respond, do not ignore it. Pray about it and ask the Lord whether He is shaping your calling through that awareness. Sometimes the smallest act of obedience in response to a need can open the door to a larger assignment in the future. What begins as a simple act of service may eventually grow into a lifelong ministry. When you allow God to guide your heart in this way, you begin to walk the path through which the duty of your calling gradually becomes clearer.

THOUGHT TO PONDER: What needs consistently move my heart when I see them? Could God be using those impressions to guide me toward the duty of my calling?

PRAYER: Father, make my heart sensitive to the needs You place before me. Help me recognise the direction of my calling and give me grace to respond faithfully to every prompting of Your Spirit, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

TOPIC: DON’T COAST THROUGH YOUR CALLING
Philippians 3:12–14; 2 Timothy 4:7

One of the most dangerous attitudes a believer can develop in relation to his calling is the habit of simply coasting through life. Some people move from year to year without seriously evaluating whether they are growing in the responsibilities God has entrusted to them. They remain comfortable with routine and avoid the discipline required to develop their calling. Yet the Kingdom of God is not designed for passive spectators. God expects every believer to grow, develop, and contribute meaningfully to His work. Time is constantly moving forward, and every season of life carries opportunities that will never return once they pass.

A wise believer therefore evaluates his life regularly and asks honest questions. What progress have I made in fulfilling God’s purpose for my life? What responsibilities have I embraced in serving God and His people? These questions are not meant to create fear but to encourage intentional living. The Bible shows us that faithful servants of God lived with a strong sense of responsibility toward their assignments. Paul, nearing the end of his life, could confidently declare that he had fought a good fight, finished his course, and kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:7). Such a testimony does not come from casual living but from a life deliberately aligned with divine purpose.

Therefore, refuse to drift through your Christian life without direction. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you recognise the duties connected to your calling and pursue them with seriousness and dedication. Do not assume that the future will automatically take care of itself. The future is built through the decisions you make today. When you respond faithfully to the duties placed before you, you gradually build a life that carries meaning, impact, and eternal value. But if you continually postpone responsibility or remain comfortable with minimal effort, you may eventually reach the end of your journey with little to show for the opportunities God placed in your hands.

THOUGHT TO PONDER: Am I intentionally developing the duties connected to my calling, or am I simply drifting through life without direction? What step can I take today to pursue God’s purpose more seriously?

PRAYER: Lord, deliver me from a careless and passive attitude toward my calling. Help me live with purpose and diligence so that I may fulfil every assignment You have given me, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
