MESSAGE FROM THE SSVP NATIONAL PRESIDENT OF NATIONAL COUNCIL OF NIGERIA ON FEAST DAY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

Dear Vincentian Brothers and Sisters!

Greetings to you all in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

I am grateful to God who journeyed with us through this season of prayer and renewal of faith; I bring you a message of goodwill, love and strength in the ninth month of our Patron Saint Vincent de Paul.

As we all know, the month of September is a month of coming together to reinforce our solidarity as servants of the poor and precisely 27th day been the celebration of the feast of St. Vincent de Paul to show gratitude to God. It is a very unique day in the Catholic Church tradition and more especially a memorable day of blessing for Vincentians all over the world; it is to the Church for St. Vincent de Paul was a Priest of prayer and a Saint inspired by the works of Jesus Christ and to us a Patron Saint of charitable associations whose lifestyle we imitate serving the poorest of the poor in hope. This event is a celebration of our unique identity which reminds us of the importance of humility, service and dedication to our lords and masters.

The Feast Day is commemorated with a nine (9) day novena which started from 18th through 26th September; enabling every Vincentian member at conferences, and different council levels to be engaged with, in soul searching, fervent prayer, examination of conscience and sober reflection on the inspiring life and works of St. Vincent de Paul. I applaud your undiluted cooperation and focus; Glory and honour be to God for the grace to accomplish this extraordinary mission.

As we join the rest of the world to rejoice on this special day of thanksgiving to the Lord this year 2023 let us be reminded that the work has just begun for the completion of the Novena is a step forward to show maximum commitment to active work, united in love and dedication to the Charism through prayer; hence, our works must reflect on the zeal for the sanctification of souls and in simplicity of heart; always seek to implore the intercession of St. Vincent de Paul in our various Vincentian outreach.

I, on behalf of my National Board and National Executive Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Nigerian Council, encourage all members to live in harmony devoid of rancor and use this celebration to work eagerly within the tenets of SSVP for God.

I wish all of us a very peaceful and healthy Feast Day.

Yours Chief Servant,
*Bro (Evangelizer) Francis Olusola Amole*

SAINT OF TODAY

St. Vincent de Paul

He was born on April 24, 1581 in a village called Pouy in Gascony in France. He was ordained a priest in the year 1600. When he was on a sea voyage from Marseilles to Narbonne, he fell into the hands of sea-pirates in the year 1605 and was taken as a slave to Tunis. He was in captivity as a slave for two years and escaped from captivity in the year 1607 by converting his owner to Christianity. He then returned to France and became preceptor in the family of Emmanuel de Gondy, Count of Goigny. In the year 1625 he laid the foundation of a congregation, which was later called as the Congregation of the Mission or Lazerists or Vincentians. In the year 1633 he founded the Daughters of Charity. He was renowned for his compassion, humility and generosity. He was also revered as the great Apostle of Charity. He died on September 27, 1660 and his heart is still incorrupt.

He was declared blessed by Pope Benedict-XIII on August 13, 1729 and canonized by Pope Clement-XII on June 16, 1737. He was given as a patron to the Sisters of Charity by Pope Leo-XIII. He is also the patron of the Brothers of Charity.

The Society of Vincent de Paul was established by the students of French University in the year 1833, led by the Blessed Frederic Ozanam.

Prayer:
Tender God, refuge of the poor, You filled Vincent de Paul with the strength of the apostles to work for the salvation of the poor and the instruction of the clergy. May we who follow the example of his life be driven by unceasing charity to continue the mission of Your Son in the world. Amen 🙏

O Glorious Saint Vincent de Paul,
The mention of your name,
Suggests a litany of your virtues:
Humility, zeal, mercy, self-sacrifice.
It also recalls
Your many foundations:
Works of Mercy,
Congregations,
Societies.

The Church gratefully remembers,
Your promotion of the priesthood.
Inspire all Charitable Workers,
Especially those who minister,
To both the spiritually
And the materially poor.

O Lord, give us the grace,
That You bestowed upon,
Your servant St. Vincent de Paul,
To relinquish the temptation,
Of material things,
In our holy effort,
To minister to the poor.

Amen.

Happy Feast day to all Vincentians.

St. Vincent de Paul, (born April 24,
1581, Pouy, now Saint-Vincent-de-
Paul, France—died September 27,
1660, Paris; canonized 1737; feast
day September 27), French saint,
founder of the Congregation of the
Mission (Lazarists, or Vincentians) for
preaching missions to the peasantry
and for educating and training a
pastoral clergy. The patron saint of
charitable societies, St. Vincent de Paul
is primarily recognized for his charity
and compassion for the poor, though
he is also known for his reform of the
clergy and for his early role in
opposing Jansenism.
Educated by the Franciscans at Dax,
France, he was ordained in 1600 and
graduated from the University of
Toulouse in 1604. He was allegedly
captured at sea by Barbary pirates
and sold as a slave but eventually
escaped. He spent a year in Rome to
continue his studies and then went to
Paris, where he remained
permanently. He placed himself under
the spiritual guidance of the
celebrated cardinal Pierre de Bérulle,
who entrusted him with the parish of
Clichy.
After founding the Congregation of
the Mission in 1625, Vincent de Paul
established in and around Paris the
Confraternities of Charity—
associations of laywomen who
visited, fed, and nursed the sick poor.
The wealth of these women, many of
noble family, aided him in establishing
the foundling and other hospitals.
With St. Louise de Marillac he
cofounded the Daughters of Charity
(Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de
Paul) in 1633. The association was
patterned after the Confraternities of
Charity and was the first
noncloistered religious institute of
women devoted to active charitable
works.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a
Catholic charitable organization
dedicated to the service of the poor,
was founded by Blessed Antoine
Frédéric Ozanam in 1833.
