Topic: BE COMMITTED TO SPIRITUAL GROWTH (6)
Read;
1 Peter 2:1 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
2:3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
Another important aspect of our commitment to spiritual growth is established in our prayer life. It is highly essential to understand that; prayers is not just a way of expressing grievances to God, it is a communion, it is an avenue to spend quality time with God. Prayers is a spiritual exercise that help ward off distractions. The more we spend time with God in prayers, the more the changes we experience in our daily lives. Spiritual growth is not as burdensome as we think, it's simply a daily and consistent commitment to spiritual exercise.
Growth doesn't come by studying alone, it encompasses consistency in Spiritual exercise. Many at times, our attention in prayers is to cause a change in the situation around us, probably there's a difficulty we are facing, we've come up with a mindset that; it is a time to fast and pray. As much as this is true, prayer changes situation but the most important thing about prayers is that; it must change you!!! If prayers has not change you, you have not prayed.
Jude 1:20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,
The above text gave us an insight to the fact that; we don't pray just to settle situations, we pray to build ourselves up spiritually, we grow as we pray why? It builds our intimacy with the Father. We express ourselves and He commune with us.
Read these;
Romans 12:12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;
Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
Colossians 4:2 Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;
4:12 Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.
Epaphras cease not to pray for the Church, so that they may stand perfect in the will of God. We were instructed to pray without ceasing (1Thessalonians 5:17, Luke 18:1) pray to change things but most importantly, pray to change yourself!!!
However, we can't concentrate on prayers alone as the spiritual exercise that brings about growth, we have other things that must take our attention and we must be committed to.
In our Primary School rhyme, there's a special one that teaches how to grow spiritually but it's a pity that no one took time to lay emphasis on the words of that rhyme;
“Read your Bible and pray everyday
Pray everyday (X2)
Read your Bible and pray everyday
If you want to grow!!!
The way to grow is established in how consistent and dedicated we are to Spiritual exercise on a daily basis, it is established in how much we fill our days with study, prayers, fasting, meditation and practice of spiritual things. Also, in how much we preach to others!!!
Make a decision today, take spiritual growth as your priority, and decide to be committed to spiritual exercise. Your growth is equivalent to your commitment and consistence!!!
You can follow this plan, it will help you (for starter)
Set apart at least one (1) hour of your day to do spiritual exercise.. Make sure it's a particular time where distraction will be minimal. It can be morning or night
Spend the first 10 minutes to pray
Spend another 20minutes studying
Spend 10 minutes meditating on what you've learnt from studying
Spend the last 20minutes praying (praying in the holy ghost is much advisable)
REPEAT AT THE EXACT TIME EVERYDAY
You'll see increase in your timing as you maintain consistency!!!
Your one hour can turn to five hours or more
To grow, you need a consistent
Fasting life
Personal vigil life
Personal Retreat time
Prayer life
Study life
Meditation Life
Preaching & Teaching life
Commitment to a local church
Practice of spiritual gift
