IGNORANCE THAT BRINGS NEEDLES PAINS, Culled From Dipo Toby Alakija Message Book At Network Evangelical Team (NET) And Christian Education College Group Resources
SCENE ONE
(Sola and Father are talking in the sitting room.)
FATHER: …. Don't say because you are now going to the University, you are on your own. We have followed what the Bible says in Proverbs 22:6 about training up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, as you are old enough to be in the University now, he will not depart from it. The Bible tells all the youths like you in Ecclesiastes 12:1 to remember your Creator in the days of your youth before difficult days come….
SCENE TWO
(Sola and Bose are together in the room on campus, talking on the bed.)
SOLA: My parents are so religious that there is nothing they will say without quoting the Bible.
BOSE: (chuckles.) Why don't you take after your parents?
SOLA: If I'm like my father especially, we cannot be in the same room together, let alone on the same bed like this.
BOSE: I don’t see anything wrong in that as long as we are not doing anything. Besides, you told me you plan to marry me, didn't it?
SOLA: Yes, I did but that doesn't really matter to my parents because of what my father made me memorized in 1 Corinthians 6:18. It says, “Flee sexual immorality”.
BOSE: (frowns at him.) You mean you can quote the Bible as well?
SOLA: Of course, I know many Bible passages because my father ensures that we memorized at least two long Bible passages every week. So I was able to put the Bible in my head. Guess what, my father was not satisfied with that. He said we should put the word of God in our hearts and not in our heads alone. This is because the Bible says in Psalm 119:11, “your word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against you.”
BOSE: (looks excited.) Wow! I wish I have a father or husband like that!
SOLA: You can go and marry my father then, naughty girl!
BOSE: (laughs.) If you and your mum would let me marry him, why not, jealous boy?
SOLA: (also laughs.) Anyway, the truth is that even though he is a powerful preacher, I don't really fancy his religious or spiritual ways of viewing everything about life.
SCENE THREE
(Sola comes out of the lecture hall when John walks towards him.)
JOHN: Hello, brother Sola. How is the lecture?
SOLA: (shrugs.) It's fine. I'm just not happy that I've run out of pocket money. I wrote to my parents to send me some money but I've not heard from them.
JOHN: Well, you have to give them time to send the money to you. You know how slow the post office is in delivering messages. (He pauses briefly.) There is a programme at the Campus Fellowship this evening around 5 p.m.
BOLA: (shakes his head.) No, I don't think I'll attend.
JOHN: Why? Is it because of your needs? (Sola nods, looking indifferent.) Come on! The Lord will supply all your needs. That's what the Bible says in Philippians 4:19.
SOLA: You sound exactly like my father. Look, I'm sick and tired of hearing what the Bible says. You don't expect me to pay attention to what God says when I'm starving, do you?
JOHN: If food is the problem, I'll share whatever I have with you. Is that okay?
SOLA: Are you trying to bribe me into listening to the word of God?
JOHN: (smiles and puts his arm round him.) If that's the way you see it, fine! Let's go to my place. (They begin to walk away.)
SCENE FOUR
(Sola and Bose are together in the room.)
SOLA: (looks angry.) Can you imagine my father sending me Bible when I told him I need pocket money?
BOSE: What? You mean he didn't send you anything?
SOLA: Hell, no! I'm beginning see him as a mean father! How did he expect me to read the Bible with empty stomach? If not for my course mate who is sharing his food with me, the pains would have been much more. I need money for many things, including my handout but all I got from my father was a Bible. (He stands up angrily.)
BOSE: He didn't send you a note which may explain reason he couldn't send anything.
SOLA: (gestures at the reading table that is littered with books, including a Bible that is zipped up.) The note is over there. (She goes to the table and takes the note.)
BOSE: (reads it aloud.) “I love you, son but Jesus loves you much more. Open to the book of John 3:16 and see how much He loves”. (She looks at him.) Did you read what is inside the Bible passage?
SOLA: I already know what is inside. It says, “For God so loves the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Look, he knows I know that passage right from my childhood. You can open it and see if I am right or not. (Bose zips the Bible open. As she does that, a fat white envelope falls out of the Bible. Sola springs on his feet and quickly goes to take the envelope. When he opens it, it is full of money.) Oh, Jesus! (He and Bose become filled with emotions.) I have sinned against God and my father. (He goes on his knees.) Lord, have mercy on me - a wretched sinner.
SCENE FIVE
(Sola stands before campus fellowship audience.)
SOLA: … This is my testimony. The word of God is the guiding principles of life. You can still be ignorant of it if you put it in your head. If you put it in heart, you will be so well guided that you will not sin against God. Secondly, you will not go through needless pain in life if you meditate on the word of God because God will speak to you through it. And lastly, anyone who is ignorant of the word of God can perish, according to Hosea 4:6. This is because ignorance of the word of God is what mostly makes us sin. So let us always study and follow the word of God. (He begins to sing.)
God has something to say, Brothers and sisters…. Listen, listen, pay proper attention for God has something to say....
