Third Sunday of Advent, Year C
Theme: Rejoice, the Lord is Near!
Gaudete Sunday: A Day of Joy and Anticipation
"Gaudete" means “Rejoice!” and marks the joyful theme of this Sunday.
The rose-coloured candle on the Advent wreath symbolizes joy as we anticipate Christ’s coming.
Rejoice in God’s Presence (Zephaniah 3:14-18a; Isaiah 12:2-6)
Zephaniah proclaims hope to weary people: "The Lord is in your midst, a mighty Savior."
God’s presence is a source of joy and strength, even during life’s darkest moments.
The responsorial psalm echoes this, calling us to draw water from the springs of salvation and rejoice in God’s deeds.
Live with Gratitude and Generosity (Luke 3:10-18)
John the Baptist calls for repentance and practical acts of faith:
Share with the poor and needy.
Be honest and just in dealings (e.g., tax collectors and soldiers avoiding greed and oppression).
True joy comes from gratitude, generosity, and service to others, not selfishness or greed.
Be Anchored in Hope (Philippians 4:4-7)
St. Paul exhorts: "Rejoice in the Lord always."
Amid challenges, place trust in God, offering prayers with thanksgiving.
God’s peace, surpassing understanding, will guard our hearts, grounding us in hope and joy.
True Joy: The Presence of Christ
Joy is not the absence of suffering but the presence of Christ in our lives.
It is a gift of the Holy Spirit, rooted in confidence that God’s love is greater than any trial.
Practical Takeaways
Recognize God’s Presence: Find joy in prayer, the Eucharist, and encounters with others.
Share Blessings: Examine how you use your resources and profession—align them with God’s will.
Trust in God’s Promises: Hope in His peace and prepare your heart for Christ’s coming.
Be a Messenger of Joy: Like John the Baptist, proclaim God’s salvation through your actions.
Closing Exhortation
"Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I say, rejoice!" (Philippians 4:4).
May our joy this Advent be rooted in Christ’s presence and shared through lives of gratitude, generosity, and hope.
God bless you!
