Quiet Time Africa Transforming lives positively in Africa and the rest of the world.

"I have a lot of vivid memories of growing up in Los Angeles in the 1940s, but one in particular keeps coming back to me today, in these troubled times. I remember sitting with my parents -- actually, my parents were sitting; I was lying on the floor, the way kids do -- and listening to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt talking to us over the radio. He was talking to the nation, of course, not just to us, but it sure felt that way. He was personal and informal, like he was right there in our living room.

I was too young to follow much of what he was saying -- something about World War II. But what I did understand was that this was a man who cared about our well-being. I felt calmed by his voice. It was a voice of authority and, at the same time, empathy. Americans were facing a common enemy -- fascism -- and FDR gave us the sense that we were all in it together. Even kids like me had a role to play: participating in paper drives, collecting scrap metal, doing whatever we could do. That's what it was like to have a president with a strong moral compass. It guided him, gave him direction, and helped him point the nation toward a better future.
Maybe this strikes you as simple nostalgia. I've got a touch of that, sure (who doesn't right now?). But I'm too focused on the future to sit around pining for the old days. For me, the power of FDR's example is what it says about the kind of leadership America needs -- and can have again, if we choose it.

But one thing is clear: Instead of a moral compass in the Oval Office, there's a moral vacuum. Instead of a president who says we're all in it together, we have a president who's in it for himself. Instead of words that uplift and unite, we hear words that inflame and divide. When someone retweets (and then deletes) a video of a supporter shouting "white power" or calls journalists "enemies of the state," when he turns a lifesaving mask against contagion into a weapon in a culture war, when he orders the police and the military to tear gas peaceful protestors so he can wave a Bible at the cameras, he sacrifices -- again and again -- any claim to moral authority.

Another four years of this would degrade our country beyond repair. The toll it's taking is almost biblical: fires and floods, a literal plague upon the land, an eruption of hatred that's being summoned and harnessed, by a leader with no conscience or shame. Four more years would accelerate our slide toward autocracy. It would be taken as free license to punish more so-called "traitors" and wage more petty vendettas -- with the full weight of the Justice Department behind them. Four more years would mean open season on our environmental laws. The assault has been ongoing -- it started with abandoning the historic agreement that the world made in Paris to combat climate change, and continued, just last month, with using the pandemic as cover to let industries pollute as they see fit. Four more years would bring untold damage to our planet -- our home.

America is still a world power. But in the past four years, it has lost its place as a world leader. A second term would embolden enemies and further weaken our standing with our friends.

When and how did the United States of America become the Divided States of America? Polarization, of course, has deep roots and many sources. President Donald Trump didn't create all of our divisions as Americans. But he has found every fault line in America and wrenched them wide open.

Without a moral compass in the Oval Office, our country is dangerously adrift. But this November, we can choose another direction. This November, unity and empathy are on the ballot. Experience and intelligence are on the ballot. Joe Biden is on the ballot, and I'm confident he will bring these qualities back to White House.

I don't make a practice of publicly announcing my vote. But this election year is different. And I believe Biden was made for this moment. Biden leads with his heart. I don't mean that in a soft and sentimental way. I'm talking about a fierce compassion -- the kind that fuels him, that drives him to fight against racial and economic injustice, that won't let him rest while people are struggling.

As FDR showed, empathy and ethics are not signs of weakness. They're signs of strength. I think Americans are coming back to that view. Despite Trump -- despite his daily efforts to divide us -- I see much of the country beginning to reunite again, the way it did when I was a kid. You can see it in the peaceful protests of the past several weeks -- Americans of all races and classes coming together to fight against racism. You can see it the ways that communities are pulling together in the face of this pandemic, even if the White House has left them to fend for themselves.

These acts of compassion and kindness make our country stronger. This November, we have a chance to make it stronger still -- by choosing a president who is consistent with our values, and whose moral compass points toward justice."

Many Christians think they’re saved, hope
they’re saved, but still they doubt, wondering,
“Am I really saved?” Our behavior gives us
reason to wonder. We’re strong one day, weak
the next. Devoted one hour, flagging the next.
Believing, then unbelieving.
Conventional wisdom draws a line through the
middle of these fluctuations. Perform above this
line, and enjoy God’s acceptance. But dip below
it, and expect a pink slip from heaven. Salvation
then becomes a matter of timing and you just
hope you die on an upswing.
Jesus’ language couldn’t be stronger: “And I give
them eternal life, and they shall never lose it or
perish throughout the ages…and no one is able
to sn**ch them out of My hand” (John 10:28
AMP). God doesn’t let go and He won’t let go of
you!

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL...
DATE : MONDAY 17th OCTOBER 2016
THEME : I KNOW YOUR WORKS II
Memorise:
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the
Spirit saith unto the Churches. Revelation 2:29
Read: Revelation 2:8-11, (KJV)
8 And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna
write; These things saith the first and the last,
which was dead, and is alive;
9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and
poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the
blasphemy of them which say they are Jews,
and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt
suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you
into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall
have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto
death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the
Spirit saith unto the churches; He that
overcometh shall not be hurt of the second
death.
MESSAGE
The Almighty Father knows all that we do,
nothing we do is hidden from Him. This should
make us rejoice because it means that our
Master knows our works, (assuming that our
works are good) and He will appreciate and
commend us for them. In other words, even if
people don’t appreciate us or if they
misunderstood us, God never misunderstoods.
In Revelation 2:9, the Lord sent a message of
goodwill to the Church in Smyrna:
“I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty,
(but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of
them which say they are Jews, and are not, but
are the synagogue of Satan.
There are beautiful things to note from the
above scripture: Jesus knows about the
tribulation we are passing through. Little
wonder one of the saints of old wrote a hymn
titled: “There’s not a Friend like the Lowly
Jesus.” The Chorus reads:
Jesus knows all about our struggles,
He will guide till the day is done;
There’s not a friend like the lowly Jesus,
No, not one! No, not one!
Another interesting thing about today’s Bible
reading is the courage that the Master gave to
the Church in Smyrna. He said: “Fear none of
those things which thou shalt suffer….be thou
faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown
of life.” Beloved, this is a message from Jesus,
the Lover of your soul. Before this time, in
John 16:33, Jesus made a categorical statement
void of ambiguity.
“These things I have spoken unto you, that in
me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall
have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have
overcome the world.”
Jesus further assured us of the great reward of
escaping the second death if we will strive to
overcome (Revelation 2:11). May the Lord help
us to overcome in Jesus’ name.
Prayer point:
Father, strengthen my inner man so that I may
stand strong till the very end.

RELATIONSHIP AND PURPOSE.
Everything I will say today is based on the assumption that you are a believer and you have the desire to please God in your life above everything else. I also want to assume that you are humble enough and open hearted enough to learn and be corrected. If all this is not true about you it may not make sense what I will be saying. But I pray it does to you. Amen
The foundation of a man’s life or woman is not a relationship. If you place relationship as the foundation of your life so many things will go wrong. When a relationship becomes the foundation of your life then everything about your life will revolve around it. It will determine your joy and sense of fulfillment. This is why when something goes wrong in a relationship many people are shattered. If your joy and sense of worth depends on a relationship it will be extremely difficult to be a stable person; because no mortal man/woman will be there with you 24/7 and give you 100% attention.
If you look closely at the account of creation of the 1st man (Adam); the first thing God gave him was not a woman. God did this intentionally. In fact the man did not know he needed a woman until God said so. He was so occupied with what he was doing.
The first thing that God gave Adam was an assignment. This was supposed to be the foundation of his life. God gave him a purpose before he gave him a woman. God placed PURPOSE before PLEASURE. If you reverse this trend something will go wrong along the way. It’s like putting the cart before the horse. This is what happens when you find a teenager who has not even gained admission into the university heavily involved in a relationship; something will suffer for it.
What Adam had was not just a job. He had purpose. The woman was actually coming to help him to fulfil the purpose that God has given him. The relationship wouldn’t have been necessary without the purpose. When a man without purpose has a woman he will abuse the woman along the line. When a woman is in a relationship with a man that has no purpose it’s like joining a taxi that the driver has no destination. The first thing a man or woman should look for in a prospective mate is a clear sense of purpose. Not just a verbal confession but something that can be seen in the life of the individual.
This simply implies that before getting into a relationship I should have discovered God’s purpose for my life to an extent. The first pursuit of my life therefore should be purpose ahead of relationship. Dysfunctional people cannot build great relationship. Each person comes into the relationship with a sense of purpose. Both of you know exactly where you are going in life. This is so important because this individual that is coming into your life may not be interested in going in the same direction with you. Growing up as a young man I heard this words that helped me a lot “Decide where you are going before you decide who will go with you. If you decide who will go with you before you decide where you are going, the individual may not be interested in going with you.” That will eventually create problems for you.
The foundation of our lives is purpose. Nothing is as important for a man or woman as to discover God’s purpose for their lives. Everything else including relationship makes sense when purpose is known. After we gave our lives to Christ the next major thing that should happen in our lives is discovering God’s purpose for our lives. There is every likelihood that you will make a wrong choice if you don’t have a sense of purpose in life.
Purpose is not the same thing as having a job or career. There are so many jobs that are going nowhere. Many jobs don’t have a future. A career or job is what you are trained to do, while purpose is what you are born to do. The difference is as heaven is higher than the earth. Let me give you an example virtually every Christian can relate with in Nigeria. Pastor E.A Adeboye was trained as a mathematician; that’s a career

MIND THAT IDOL
What you love most can become an idol. Idol is anything that replaces the position of God in man's heart .That thing that is uppermost in man’s mind, whatever you frequently think about 99% of your time daily as become an idol. Idols are potent destroyer of man's soul. It will never give room for man to remember the goodness of God, to serve or worship God, to honor the sovereignty of God. It replaces position of God in men, life. It makes man unacceptable to God by defiling man with a corrupt heart filled with evil things and greediness. Makes man to have strong desire to fulfill the lust of the flesh. Thereby man becomes an enemy of God.
1 Kings 16:25-26 KJV
But Omri wrought evil in the eyes of the Lord, and did worse than all that were before him. [26] For he walked in all the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin, to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger with their vanities.

A peep to the lives of those who allow idols to operate in their lives showed that the end is destruction because it always makes man to abandon God. Judgement of God is eminent on those who turn away from Him to serve idols. God hates idol worshipers and will destroy all who turn away to idols.
1. Gen.25:27-34
Genesis 25:27-34 KJV
And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents. [28] And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob. [29] And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint: [30] And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom. [31] And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. [32] And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? [33] And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. [34] Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

Esau made food his idol and sold his birthright: look at the testimony he had later in Hebrews 12:16-17 KJV
Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. [17] For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
2. Solomon
1 Kings 11:1-10 KJV
But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites; [2] Of the nations concerning which the Lord said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. [3] And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart. [4] For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father. [5] For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. [6] And Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord , and went not fully after the Lord , as did David his father. [7] Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon. [8] And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods. [9] And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the Lord God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice, [10] And had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods: but he kept not that which the Lord commanded.
The strange women turn is heart away from serving God, he started to serve their idols.
God was angry with him and brought an end to reign of dynasty of David of having full hold kingship all the tribes in ISREAL till today;
1 Kings 11:11, 13-14 KJV
Wherefore the Lord said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant. [13] Howbeit I will not rend away all the kingdom; but will give one tribe to thy son for David my servant's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake which I have chosen. [14] And the Lord stirred up an adversary unto Solomon, Hadad the Edomite: he was of the king's seed in Edom.
God raised enemies against Solomon
3. Jeroboam;1 Kings 12:25-33 KJV
Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel. [26] And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David: [27] If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the Lord at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah. [28] Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. [29] And he set the one in Beth-el, and the other put he in Dan. [30] And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan. [31] And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi. [32] And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Beth-el, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Beth-el the priests of the high places which he had made. [33] So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Beth-el the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.
God destroyed all the lienage of Jeroboam
4. Others; Eli and sons ( 1 Samuel 2-4), Aron and Israelites (Exodus 32) , Ahab, Jezabel and the prophet of Baal's (1 Kings18)
Idol brings ultimate destruction on man. Don't let anything become an Idol in your life. Proverbs 4;23 says “Guide your heart above all else for it determines the course of your life.”

Sermon 24/04/2016

15/04/2016

Do a simple exercise with me. Measure your life against just these four standards from the Ten Commandments:

You must not steal. Have you ever stolen anything? A paper clip? A parking space? …you, thief.

You must not lie. Those who say they haven’t– just did.

You must not commit adultery. Jesus said, “If you look at a woman with lust, you’ve committed adultery in your heart” (Matthew 5:28).

You must not murder. Before you claim innocence, Jesus said “Anyone who is so much as angry with a brother or sister is guilty of murder” (Matthew 5:22).

Jesus made his position clear: “Anyone whose life is not holy will never see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14). So where does that leave us? It leaves us drawing hope from 1 Corinthians 15:3. Christ died for our sins—in place of—on behalf of! So, don’t measure yourself by keeping commandments. Measure yourself by the cross.
