Protecting the Nigerian Child: A Call for Urgent National Action
International Children’s Day 2026 - Yinka Adesanya
As we mark the 2026 International Children’s Day, my heart goes out to every Nigerian child whose innocence and future are constantly threatened by insecurity, terrorism, violence, and kidnapping.
It is painful that in a nation blessed with so much potential, many children now go to school in fear instead of hope. Schools should be places of learning, discovery, and destiny — not places of terror and uncertainty.
I strongly believe that the Nigerian child deserves intentional protection, quality care, and a safe environment to grow, dream, and thrive. Beyond celebrating Children’s Day with speeches and festivities, this moment should awaken our collective national conscience toward the urgent need to secure the lives and future of our children.
I call on the Federal Government, State Governments, security agencies, educational authorities, religious bodies, corporate organizations, and community leaders to rise together and prioritize the safety of every child across Nigeria.
We must strengthen security around schools, improve child protection systems, support vulnerable families, and create rapid response structures capable of preventing attacks and kidnappings targeting children.
As a pastor, a father figure, and a concerned Nigerian, I believe that protecting children is not just a governmental responsibility — it is a moral responsibility for every one of us.
No child should have to abandon education because of fear. No parent should live with the trauma of wondering whether their child will return safely from school.
The future of Nigeria is sitting today in our classrooms, homes, and communities. If we fail to protect our children, we endanger the future of our nation itself.
On this International Children’s Day, I lend my voice to advocate for stronger protection, better security, and renewed hope for every Nigerian child.
Together, we must build a Nigeria where every child can learn safely, live freely, and dream boldly.
