DAY SEVEN: FAITH AND PERSEVERANCE

Faith is not a one-time decision but a lifelong journey that demands perseverance. Jesus warns His disciples: “The one who endures to the end will be saved” (Matthew 24:13). True faith remains firm amid trials, delays, and disappointments. The early Christians bore witness to persevering faith, remaining faithful despite persecution and suffering. Their endurance reveals that faith matures through fidelity over time.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that faith must be nourished and persevered daily (CCC 162). St Cyprian of Carthage describes perseverance as the crown of faith, while St Gregory the Great teaches that perseverance reveals the authenticity of faith because genuine faith is not a part-time choice but a full time commitment.

St Alphonsus Maria De Liguori frequently warned against spiritual discouragement. He taught that perseverance in prayer and fidelity to duty, even in dryness, are signs of strong faith. According to him, God often permits difficulties to strengthen faith rather than destroy it.

St Gerard Majella remained faithful to God despite illness, misunderstanding, and hardship. He never abandoned his vocation or trust in God. What is our attitude towards God when things do not go as we desire or wished?

Prayer
Lord, grant me perseverance. Strengthen my faith so that I may remain faithful to You until the end. Amen.
