DATE: SUNDAY, 23RD AUGUST, 2026 {Trinity 12}
THEME: PREACHING THE GOSPEL

TEXT: MATTHEW 10: 16-22 _*(NKJV)

16 “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.
17 But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and scourge you in their synagogues.
18 You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.
19 But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak;
20 for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.
21 “Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death.
22 And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.

MESSAGE:

As part of Jesus' training of His disciples (the Apostles). He sent them out to go and practise preaching the Gospel. He also reminded them of the challenges they would face and asked them to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. The challenges included: Delivering them to Councils (civil leaders), flogging, death, rebellion, hatred, etc. His assurance to them was that if they endured to the end, they would be saved.

The things Jesus told His disciples that day are still the same challenges those who preach the Gospel today pass through. In many parts of the world today, Christians are being persecuted, marginalised, killed, rendered homeless, etc., just because they preach the Gospel or believe in Christ. Those in authority or government seem not to be bothered. Christians have become an endangered species. The devil is really at war against believers to stop the spread of the Gospel. It is only God who will save the remnant to continue to preach without fear.

PRAYER:
Matthew 24:14: _"And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come."_ Lord. May You enlist me today! *Amen*

TEXT: 1 KINGS 1: 1-10 (NKJV)

1 Now King David was old, advanced in years; and they put covers on him, but he could not get warm.
2 Therefore his servants said to him, “Let a young woman, a virgin, be sought for our lord the king, and let her stand before the king, and let her care for him; and let her lie in your bosom, that our lord the king may be warm.”
3 So they sought for a lovely young woman throughout all the territory of Israel, and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
4 The young woman was very lovely; and she cared for the king, and served him; but the king did not know her.
5 Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I will be king”; and he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him. 6 (And his father had not rebuked him at any time by saying, “Why have you done so?” He was also very good-looking. His mother had borne him after Absalom.)
7 Then he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest, and they followed and helped Adonijah.
8 But Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei, and the mighty men who belonged to David were not with Adonijah.
9 And Adonijah sacrificed sheep and oxen and fattened cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by En Rogel; he also invited all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah, the king’s servants.
10 But he did not invite Nathan the prophet, Benaiah, the mighty men, or Solomon his brother.

MESSAGE:

One role God expects of all parents is to enforce discipline on their children. Proverbs 29:15 states thus; _"The rod and rebuke give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother."_ We may never know for sure why the father is not mentioned in this instruction.

We see in our text today where the above scripture played out clearly. Adonijah felt it was his turn to ascend the throne of Israel. He never allowed his father, David, who was still alive, to make the pronouncement rather he organised his coronation group and took them to where they would crown him king. He also extended his invitation to a selected few and left out others. Though he may have been the eldest after Absalom, but it was not right for him to declare himself king. The problem lies in v. 6a. "And his father had not rebuked him at any time by saying, "Why have you done so?" Though David was a very reputable King in Israel, he was very weak in enforcing discipline at the home front. This led to some of his children misbehaving. Please, keep an eye on your children so that they will not grow out of control and bring shame to the family.

PRAYER:
Lord, please give me the grace to bring up my children in Your unity. Amen.

TOPIC: COMPASSION WITHOUT COMPROMISE

TEXT: 2 Thessalonians 3:14-18

ANCHOR VERSE: 2 Thess. 3:14-15
“And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed. Yet do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.” (NKJV)

MESSAGE:

When Adam and Eve sinned, they lost fellowship with God. Yet He clothed them (Gen. 3:21). This shows God's heart—He does not abandon sinners but desires their repentance. He wants every sinner to repent and come to the saving knowledge of Him and He would not condemn but give sinners an opportunity for repentance.

Paul instructed Christians to act likewise. Avoid keeping company with those who live in an unrepentant state, but do not treat them as enemies (2 Thess. 3:14-15). Instead, show love, pray for them, and hope for their restoration. God calls us to balance love and wisdom. While we should show kindness, we must also guard our faith, ensuring that ungodly influences do not lead us away from Christ. Love is important and your spiritual health is also essential.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Are you showing Christ's love to the lost around you while also carefully protecting your walk with Him?

PRAYER: Lord, help me to love others with wisdom and grace. Give me discernment to influence others for Christ without compromising my faith. Amen.
