KINGDOM Series 2
KINGDOM OF GOD: DEFINED
The heart of Jesus’ teachings during His earthly ministry centers on the theme of the Kingdom of God.
He introduced it, emphasized it, preached and taught it so often. He equally demonstrated the lifestyle of the Kingdom for all to see and commanded His first disciples to go and preach, live and demonstrate the gospel of the Kingdom to the world.
“From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand”. (Matthew 4:17). And He declared unequivocally that “My kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36).
However, this Kingdom message/theme that is at the heart of Jesus’ life, ministry and teaching is largely unknown, misunderstood or outrightly neglected by majority of Christians, churches and church leaders of modern times. The Bible says; “Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever”. (Heb. 13:8) We need to urgently reexamine, reflect and realign our lives to Kingdom values and realities again.
A. Kingdom Misconceptions
Over the years since the ascension of Jesus to heaven, there had been numerous misconceptions, teachings and postulations by several schools of thought concerning the true meaning of the kingdom of God. Various teachers at various times have taught that the kingdom of God means:-
1. Political Kingdom
The Jews expected that the first coming of Jesus was meant to bring the kingdom back to Israel; to destroy their enemies, dislodge the Romans and Jesus becomes their political leader; (Amos 9:14; Zechariah 8:4). They even attempted to make Him their King (John 6:14-15).
Many still believe, due to this misconception that Jesus is still only for the Jews and will come back for them only.
2. Literally, Physical Kingdom
The belief that the kingdom of God is to literally take over the earth, govern the nations, by forming political parties. Therefore, Christians and preachers are to become political leaders, government officials and rule the nations on behalf of Jesus now. Some have formed communes and teach that it is kingdom of God – separate from the populace. That's why lots of sincere believers with this view join political parties to rule and administer their nations.
3. Futuristic Kingdom – Matthew 6:9-11
This is the misconception that the kingdom is only futuristic. It is believed that the kingdom will be in heaven and we cannot attain it now or know the true kingdom now (Daniel 2:44-45). People with this perception believe that only few people can get to and enjoy the kingdom of God when it will eventually come.
All these misconceptions have served to cloud the true meaning of Jesus kingdom from the understanding and lifestyle of many modern believers.
B. KINGDOM DEFINED – Luke 17:20-21; Luke 19:12-15; Mark 10:15; Matt. 6:33
The world understands kingdom largely in terms of geographical areas over which a sovereign king exercises authority. For instance, United Kingdom, Kingdom of Swaziland, Kingdom of Thailand, Saudi Arabia etc. These are geographical territories that kings rule over. But in Biblical terms, it is the rule and reign of Christ in the heart of men and women.. Both in Old and New Testament, the term “Kingdom” (Malkut in Hebrew, Basileia in Greek) refers primarily to the rule and reign of a king. Therefore, the Kingdom of God is the:-
✓ Rule and reign of Christ within.
✓ Accepting Christ into your heart.
✓ Surrending to the Lordship of Christ.
✓ Making Christ the Lord of every thing.
✓ Letting Christ rule, reign and obeying Him.
✓ Letting the Lordship of Christ shine into our environment.
✓ Christ showing forth His power into our communities.
✓ Obedience to Christ and doing God’s will in every area of living.
The Kingdom of God is accessed through genuine repentance, inviting Christ within (Matt. 4:17; Matt. 6:33). Christ within will shine forth to others (Col. 1:27). The singular purpose of the kingdom in both heart and life is “Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven” in all ramifications (Matt. 6:10). If you accept Christ as Saviour, but not yet totally surrender to His Lordship and Kingship in every area of your life, you are not yet in His kingdom.
C. Present and Future Kingdom
In balanced scriptural understanding, the kingdom of God is both “now and not yet”. Thus, the Kingdom of God is real and present in one sense, and yet consistent and future in another sense.
i. The Kingdom Is Present Now – Luke 11:28; Matt. 12:28; Rom. 9:31;
2 Cor. 10:14; Phil. 3:16; 1 Thess. 2:16.
In these scriptures, the Kingdom has arrived through Jesus. The devil has been defeated on the cross, miracles are happening, the new covenant has been instituted, outcasts are being gathered (Matt. 11:46) and end of Law and Prophets and the arrival of the Messiah (1 Cor. 11:25). The long-awaited banquet of the Messiah had begun (Luke 14:15-24). The Kingdom of God is now present in their midst. (Luke 17:20-21). The Holy Spirit is poured out and still in the world (Rom. 14:17).
ii. The Kingdom Is Future Also – Luke 11:2; Matt. 7:21-23; Mark 14:25; Daniel 2:44-45
The Kingdom of God also has a future aspect. The future aspect is resurrection of the dead, final judgment of believers (2 Cor. 5:10) and sinners (Rev. 20) and Millenial reign of Christ and New heaven, new earth, where righteousness dwells (Matt. 5:19-20; 8:11-12; 25:31-46; Dan. 7:13-14; Luke 1:32-33; 2 Peter 1:11).
Since the Kingdom of God is both now and not yet, the believer must therefore be on guard against the danger of emphasizing one aspect of the kingdom at the expense of the other. The “now and the not yet” must be held in constant tension. Believers can rejoice in having passed from death into life and in the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit, but we must not forget to look longingly toward the blessed hope (Titus 2:13), when the Son of Man will return and bring the kingdom to its consummation.
D. The King Over The Kingdom
Jesus Christ of Nazareth is the King over the spiritual Kingdom of God. He announced that the Kingdom of God had come in Him.
“But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.” - Matthew 12:28
✓ He invaded this earth to destroy the kingdom of Satan and set everything right. - 1 John 3:8; Acts 10:38
✓ He is given authority and power by the Father – John 12:31; John 5:20-23
✓ Jesus is co-equal with God. He is the very Son of God and possesses the same attributes like the Father. He is the second Person in the Trinity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
✓ He left heaven with the permission of His Father to earth so as to live, and died as full man, full God and resurrected triumphantly over sin, Satan and the world, in order to set man free from the bo***ge of sin and Satan.
✓ He came to take back the spiritual authority that the first Adam sold into the hand of Satan. Where the first Adam failed, Jesus as the last Adam succeeded - Romans 5:17-19
✓ Jesus as the King over the Kingdom of God will rule and reign forever in power and authority – Daniel 7:13-14, 17.
✓ He will reign until all enemies are subdued - 1 Corinthians 15:24-25; Psalm 110:1-2
✓ He will overcome and prevail and then hand over everything into the hand of the Father – 1 Corinthians 15:24-25.
✓ Since His first coming and vicarious death on the cross and triumphant resurrection (Colossians 2:15) Christ has set up His kingdom in the heart of men and women. He is the king of hearts. He takes residence in the hearts that are opened to Him and rule and reign there – Revelation 3:20; Colossians 1:27
✓ He rules and reigns in the hearts of people across nations, languages, groups and kingdoms of men.
✓ He will surely reign now and throughout eternity and will slay those who are His enemies - Luke 12:27
✓ Today, He is the Lamb on the throne, willing to save, heal and deliver. But in the kingdom of heaven, He will be the Lion that will kill, devour and destroy all His enemies.
✓ There is no kingdom without a king and Jesus is the undisputed King of God’s kingdom, both now and in eternity.
There is no way to have His kingdom in your heart and life if you don’t submit to His Lordship over your life and hearts. He must be the king over your life and living. You must believe in Him and obey Him without question, if you are going to reign with Him here and hereafter. In spite of opposition from satanic kingdom and carnalities of men, Christ is the undisputed King of life and eternity. You may be religious but until you sincerely and genuinely welcome Him into your heart and crown Him the king there, you cannot be a citizen of His kingdom.
