"TRY FASTING AND PRAYER"

‘We fasted and entreated…God...’ Ezra 8:23 NKJV

EZRA'S ASSIGNMENT was rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem, and there were moments when it felt overwhelming. So here’s what he did: ‘We fasted and entreated our God for this, and He answered our prayer.’ When you are willing to go without food and take the time to seek God with all your heart, He will respond to you. So, when should you fast? Let’s observe three things Ezra fasted and prayed for: 1) ‘…To seek from Him the right way for us…’ (v. 21 NKJV). Without God’s guidance you are left to the mercy of your own best thinking, and that can get you into trouble you may not get out of in a hurry. God doesn’t want you travelling blindly into the future, hoping for the best. His promise to you is, ‘Ask me and I will tell you remarkable secrets you do not know about things to come’ (Jeremiah 33:3 NLT). 2) ‘…and [for] our little ones…’ (Ezra 8:21 NKJV). Because God Himself is a father, this much is sure: when you petition Him on behalf of your children He gets involved in their lives! Samuel was moulded into one of Israel’s greatest prophets by the prayers of a godly mother called Hannah. 3) ‘…and all our possessions’ (v. 21 NKJV). If unemployment, the home foreclosure rate, and the rollercoaster we call the stock market are anything to go by, you’d be wise to consult God before you make any financial decision. ‘Has God promised to bless me financially?’ you ask. Yes. But only when your heart is in harmony with His will and your desire is to do what pleases Him.

"YOU ARE THE CHURCH (1)"

‘…To equip God’s people to do his work...’ Ephesians 4:12 NLT

IF YOU think the unemployment statistics in the country are bad, take a look at the church. Twenty per cent of its members give eighty per cent of its income, and do eighty percent of its work. The rest are happy just to be spectators. It’s easy to sit back, criticise, and say, ‘Why doesn’t the church do something about the problem?’ Hold on there: You are the church; you do something about it! You say, ‘But I left my church because I don’t like the way they do things.’ You didn’t leave God’s church, which is the body of Christ, did you? So, instead of talking about what your church doesn’t do, look in the mirror and ask yourself, ‘What am I doing for the Lord?’ Do you know what an Armchair Manager is? It’s someone who analyses the game when it’s over, criticises the players, complains about the referee’s calls, and is content to sit in the stadium and be a spectator rather than a player. Hello! It takes commitment to spend hours in practice knowing you’ll be booed by the crowd, tackled by opponents, and will leave the field beat up and covered in dirt. The Bible says that the job of your pastor is: ‘…To equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church…This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. Then we will no longer be immature like children…’ (v. 12-14 NLT). Think about it!

"HOW’S YOUR COMMUNICATION?"

‘Husbands, love your wives...’ Ephesians 5:25 NKJV

ONE OF the biggest challenges in marriage is communication. Here’s an example: in the past husbands went to work and wives stayed home to raise the children. Now, someone has estimated that the average man speaks about twenty-nine thousand words a day and the average woman speaks about thirty-three thousand words a day. That may not be accurate, but let’s use it as an illustration. He’s been out in the workplace all day and by the time he gets home he’s used up twenty-six thousand of his words, leaving only three thousand he feels no need to say. But she’s been locked up all day with the dishes, the nappies and the mundane. She has talked to her mother, friends and neighbours and used up about eight thousand words. So when he gets home she has twenty-five thousand words waiting for him. After a silent supper he spends the evening watching TV, then they go to bed. As he’s about to fall asleep a voice says, ‘Are you awake?’ If you are wise, you will be! If not, tomorrow night there will be fifty thousand words lying beside you. Do the math; in ten years there will be enough words to fill the central library. But maybe not; maybe there will be no words. A frequent reason given in divorce is: ‘We just got to where we had nothing to say to one another anymore.’ The Bible says, ‘Husbands, love your wives.’ Love listens when we have nothing particularly interesting to say. It listens because only when we have been heard and validated, do we feel cherished. So, ‘How’s your communication?’

"THE SECRET OF FULFILMENT"

‘There is a time for everything…a time to weep and a time to laugh.’ Ecclesiastes 3:1-4 NIV

OPTIMISTS TEND to believe that life is mostly good; pessimists, that it’s mostly bad. Life is both. And only those who embrace that truth are able to find fulfilment. Why? Because those who accept it but don’t embrace it become apathetic, meeting every difficulty with a shrug and a sigh. They may survive, but they won’t be successful. To succeed you must be proactive, in bad times as well as good. If you examine the lives of successful people you’ll discover they always do what’s right no matter how they feel, and by doing right—they end up feeling good. On the other hand, unsuccessful people tend to wait to feel good before they do what’s right. As a result, they neither do what’s right nor feel good. Often you won’t feel like doing the right thing, but you need to do it anyway. Nelson Mandela said: ‘I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one finds many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can rest only for a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended.’ If you always do the right thing—despite how you feel, despite what others may say or do in response—you will be satisfied with yourself. And that, at the end of the day, will do a lot to determine whether you feel fulfilled.

"PRAYER (4)"

‘He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him...’ Psalm 91:15 NKJV

BILL GATES was hooked up to the computer network we call the Internet. Using it, subscribers can send electronic mail (e-mail) to other users of the Internet. Originally, Gates had an Internet address just like everyone. But he got into trouble when The New Yorker magazine published his Internet address. Now anyone could send the computer genius a letter. In no time he was swamped with five thousand messages—he simply couldn’t handle it. So he armed his computer with software that filtered his e-mail, allowing important messages through and sending all the others to electronic oblivion. We are limited; we can handle only so much and do only so much. God, on the other hand, never tires of s-mail (spirit mail). His ear is always open to our prayers. And He has an unlimited capacity to help. You’ll never hear Him say, ‘Due to an unusually high call volume I am unable to take your message at this time. Please call back or leave a message.’ No, the Bible says, ‘He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honour him.’ (Psalm 91:15 NKJV) ‘...the desire of the righteous will be granted’ (Proverbs 10:24 NKJV). ‘...the prayer of the upright is His delight’ (Proverbs 15:8 NKJV). ‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know’ (Jeremiah 33:3 NKJV). ‘If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you’ (John 15:7 NKJV).

"LIVING IN THE FLOW OF GOD’S BLESSING"

‘…Take over the land…flowing with milk and honey.’ Deuteronomy 11:8-9 NIV

WHEN THEY were slaves in Egypt, the Israelites had to pump water from the Nile River to irrigate their crops and put food on their table. Can you imagine slaving every day on an old foot pump just to get by? But then things changed for the better. God told them, ‘…Go in and take over the land…flowing with milk and honey…not like the land of Egypt…where you planted your seed and irrigated it by foot…’ (v. 8-10 NIV). There’s a lesson here. You can reach a place in your walk with God where you get ‘off the pump and into the flow’; where you stop ‘sweating it,’ because God’s goodness flows into every area of your life. But this promise is conditional—it’s for those who obey God: ‘Observe therefore all the commands I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to go in and take over the land…’ (v. 8 NIV). Obedience is like having the right access code. It enables you to make withdrawals on God’s blessing because you are walking in His will. We all want to live in the flow of God’s blessing, right? Yet too few of us do. Who are these ‘blessed’ people? 1) Those who act on God’s instructions. 2) Those who confront the giants of fear in their life. 3) Those that refuse to be swayed by the ‘wilderness mentality’ of others. 4) Those with the faith to say, ‘The Lord…will lead us into that land…[He] will give it to us…do not be afraid…’ (Numbers 14:8-9 NIV). And you can be one of those people.

"THE JOY IS IN THE JOURNEY"

‘…I have come that they may have life…to the full.’ John 10:10 NIV

SOMETIMES WHEN we achieve the things we strive for, we find they’re not very fulfilling. As we look back we realise that our greatest joy was not in the goal we reached, but in the growth we experienced on the way to it. Scientist Koichi Tanaka describes this phenomenon and how it can come about during the enjoyable pursuit of a dream. As he worked on trying to create an ion with lasers, he says: ‘I failed for weeks and months before I succeeded in making an ion. Why did I continue the experiment? Because I enjoyed it. It was fun for me to come to know something that I had never known before, and that fun enabled me to persist.’ That persistence helped him to win a Nobel Prize in chemistry. You have the potential to make many wonderful discoveries in life, and none greater than what you discover about God, and yourself.
One leadership expert writes: ‘The pursuit of my dream has taken me out of my comfort zone, elevated my thinking, given me confidence, and confirmed my sense of purpose. My pursuit of the dream and my personal growth have become so intertwined that I now ask myself, “Did I make the dream, or did the dream make me?”’ When your mind accepts a new idea or learns a new truth, it’s forever changed. And once stretched, it takes on a new shape and never goes back to its original form. When that happens, you experience true fulfilment. No wonder children’s book author Elizabeth Coatsworth said, ‘When I dream, I am ageless.’

"TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR TIME (2)"

‘Teach us to realise the brevity of life...’ Psalm 90:12 NLT

GORDON MACDONALD gives us some of the traits of a disorganised life. See if you recognise any: ‘1) Appointments/messages/deadlines missed. I know I’m disorganised when there are a series of forgotten appointments, telephone messages to which I have failed to respond, and deadlines which I have begun to miss. The day becomes filled with broken commitments and lame excuses. 2) Unproductive tasks. If I am disorganised I tend to invest my energies in unproductive tasks; there is a tendency toward daydreaming and avoidance of decisions that have to be made, and procrastination. 3) Lack of intimacy with God. Disorganised Christians rarely enjoy intimacy with God. No one has to tell them that time must be set aside for the purpose of Bible study and reflection, for intercession, for worship. They know all of that. They simply are not doing it. They excuse themselves, saying there is no time. But they know it is more a matter of organisation and personal will than anything else. 4) Shallow personal relationships. Days pass without a significant conversation with my son or daughter. My wife and I will be in contact but our conversations may be shallow. I may become irritable, resenting any attempt on her part to call attention to things I have left undone or people I appear to have let down. 5) Lack of self-esteem. When we are disorganised in our control of time we just don’t like ourselves, our jobs, or much else about our worlds. And it is difficult to break the destructive pattern that settles in. This terrible habit pattern of disorganisation must be broken, or our private worlds will quickly fall into total disorder.’

"TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR TIME (1)"

‘Walk in wisdom…redeeming the time.’ Colossians 4:5 NKJV

NOTHING IS more costly than wasted time. Every minute lost is gone forever. Today, we have more time-saving devices than any other generation, yet we seem to have less time. To get control of your life you must first get control of your time. That means redirecting each lost minute toward a worthy purpose. We all have things we want to do, plan to do, and feel bad about not doing. Understand this: the difference in who you are right now and the person you’ll be ten years from now, will largely be determined by your relationships and your reading habits. And the first book you should read is your Bible, the world’s greatest wisdom manual. Here’s a suggestion that will help you: instead of having an ‘all or nothing’ attitude to Bible reading, seize your ‘in between time.’ You’ll be amazed how the wasted minutes in each day and week add up to hours of productive time. J. Oswald Sanders gives us three great insights: 1) Stop leaks. Let us not consider our day only in terms of hours, but in smaller areas of time. If we look after the minutes, the hours will look after themselves. 2) Set priorities. Much time is spent on things of only secondary importance. We give such undue attention to petty details that matters of major importance are squeezed out. This is especially so where spiritual things are concerned. 3) Start planning. Without a plan we all tend to drift. So in the attitude of prayer, ask, ‘How can I best plan today?’ Buy up the spare minutes as eagerly as a miser hoards money.

"LIVING FOR OTHERS"

‘…Through love serve one another.’ Galatians 5:13 NKJV

JACQUES COUSTEAU, the famous French maritime explorer, said, ‘If a man for whatever reason has the opportunity to lead an extraordinary life, he has no right to keep it to himself.’ Jesus lived that way. He said, ‘I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep’ (John 10:11 NKJV). To be like Him, you must live for something greater than your own interests. In his book Half Time: Changing Your Game Plan from Success to Significance, author Bob Buford says, ‘The first half of life has to do with getting and gaining, learning and earning. The second half is more risky because it has to do with living beyond the immediate.’ By that he means living for a cause greater than yourself, and for others beyond yourself. The great men and women in Scripture were not great because of what they earned and owned; they were great because they gave themselves to people and causes that lived beyond them. Their dream was to do something that benefited others. Only a rare minority of people are able to hold closely to their dream to make a difference, and are willing to give up everything to make that dream come true. Of people like that it will never be said that when they died, it was as though they had never lived. Their dream lives on after them, because they lived for others. And it was in living for others and not for self that they found their greatest joy and fulfilment. The poet wrote: ‘Others, Lord, yes others; Let this my motto be. Help me to live for others, that I may live for Thee.’
