LET'S TALK ABOUT HERMENEUTICS
TEACHING THE WORD OF GOD
The greatest task a person can do is teaching the word of God.
To teach the word of God is a cumbersome assignment one can be engaged in. So, teaching is a great job and a God-given gift as well.
A teacher cannot teach pupils more than he knows, likewise a leader cannot lead others further and farther than he himself has gone.
So, before we can effectively teach the word of God, we have to *Know* the word of God and have to *understand* the word of God.
If you can memorize some verses, it is good but not encouraging because you might run dry of them when needed.
But when you read to understand with the help of Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit in you will help to store the verses and whenever it is needed, it will be prompted by the Holy Spirit, this is known as the quickening of the Holy Spirit.
The Jewish boys learn Torah that way and Muslim boy learn Quran that way - i. e. by memorization, but the Holy Bible is a different book that was brought to us by inspiration and breath of God, so it is the same Holy Spirit that inspired the writers that is also in the Christ's followers that will do the storing and prompting/quickening when needed - Psalm 119:11 knowing fully well that the word of God is a powerful tool to fight against temptation and sin as we noticed the effectiveness in Jesus Christ during His temptations.
Teaching the word of God has been God's intentions and idea from inception.
When God revealed Himself to anyone, He charged them to teach their children who will teach their unborn generations.
Teaching the word of God is dated back to the time of Adam when God told Adam what to eat and what not to eat in the Garden of Eden.
Adam in turn instructed his wife Eve of the instructions of the Lord.
Likewise Noah who taught his children the way of the Lord and they walked therein which made them qualified to entered the ark with Noah.
Abraham did the same thing, and so many others.
WHY TEACHING THE WORD OF GOD?
1. It is a means of safe guarding the and keeping the commandments of God - Deut. 11:19
2. It teaches the coming generation the fear and the law of the Lord.
3. It brings enlightenment and empower the people.
4. It makes us to know our rights when enemies shall come to rob us.
5. It makes people to understand God more... etc
HOW CAN WE TEACH THE WORD EFFECTIVELY?
A. KNOWING THE WORD OF GOD
A teacher teaches what he knows. You can't give what you don't have.
To teach the word of God is very easy, everyone can teach for teaching sake, but that's not what I am saying here.
Teaching the word of God effectively, this means, we teach the word of God and have result, we should teach the word with aim of having positive reaction to the word being taught.
The only way to know the word of God is to read it again and again and again? We should read it like a book - not just a few verses at a time. We should endeavor to read the entire book in order to get the true meaning of what is said and meant.
Just read as many books of the Bible you can read, either short books like 1st - 3rd John, Jude, Esther, Nehemiah, etc, just read to understand and make sure you enjoy what you are reading.
If you're a Bible teacher, I challenge you to read through the entire Bible and make sure you enjoy what you're reading.
UNDERSTANDING THE WORD
This is another level in the word of God. It is one thing to teach the word, it is another thing to have understanding in what you're teaching.
Many ministers today does not possess understanding in the word, so they teaches erroneously, they mishandled the word of Grace. They misappropriates the word of God.
For you to be an effective teacher of the Word of God, you must strive to possess deeper understanding in the word of God according to Paul's advice to Timothy that he must seek to learn with diligence to become a teacher who will teach the word of God without prejudice, who will not be put to shame when confronted with questions from the people he would be teaching.
As we know nowadays that most of our congregations, upon hearing your topic, they will ask Google, AI, Chat GTP etc, they would get the answers and they will come to Bible class to test their teachers/pastors, not that they want to know, but they want to put you to shame.
We have found ourselves pastoring AI generated congregations, so the pastor must be well grounded in the Scriptures or else he/she will be swayed away in his ignorance.
Let me share this experience with you.
I was confronted by a brethren in the church and asked me a simple question.
It was so simple that if one is not careful, one will be ashamed.
He asked, "what is covenant?"
Now let me throw the question to you back.
Can you attempt to answer this.
WHAT IS COVENANT?
It look simple and a very familiar word that most of the Christians, pastors and teachers of the word simply presumed they know it because of its everyday usage and it is a common word in the scripture and frequently used among people.
There is great difference between covenant, agreement, vow, promise
Where do we meet the word covenant for the first time in the Bible?
Dictionary interprets covenant as an agreement between to parties, etc. That is biblically wrong.
Now, going by dictionary meaning, where was God and Noah agreeing to the covenant God spoke?
Where was Noah's agreeing to that?
In agreement, there must be response from both part before it is sealed and confirmed to be an agreement, but in covenant, nothing like that takes place.
When God establishes covenant, there was no response from the other party, God just speaks what He wanted to do, He revealed it to man and that is final - Jer. 29:11
God never seek for the opinion of the other party as in agreement.
In drafting agreement or memorandum of understanding (MOU), the both parties must give their consents, but in covenant, no consent is needed.
It is an establishment of a superior plan and purposes spoken out or made know to the parties involved so as to be guided by it.
Can you see now that dictionary is wrong in its definition.
God never seek for approval from anyone while establishing His covenant with man.
Likewise the devil, Satan never seek for approval or consent from our forefathers before establishing his demonic covenant with them and their unborn generations.
God never asked Noah if he agree that He God will not destroy the world with water again and we never read Noah responding at all.
We never read where God seek for Abraham's consent if he would agree to be the father of many nations and if he would agree to the fact that he would be bless and anyone who curse him would be cursed.
God never asked for his perception or idea or intent or consent.
God just came and spoke out His mind, plans and purposes for Abraham so that Abraham would walk within the confine of that covenant.
Did you get that?
So, how do I know this?
It was a Divine revelation I caught during studying His Word.
That is what the diligent studies conducted under the influence and guidance of the Holy Spirit does.
Don't forget that I told you in the past that, the Scriptures you are attempting to study was inspired by the Breath of God, the Spirit of God, that same Breath, the Spirit of God is with us that are attempting to study and interprete the scriptures to tell us what He (the Spirit of God) meant in a particular verse, because He was the one that inspired, guided, and instructed the writers to write.
Seeking to understand the Word of God should be the paramount search of Christians, so that we will be able to preach and teach the word of God with all boldness and assurance that we are telling people the truth and the true meaning of the word.
Teaching the word of God effectively depend on knowing it first, also knowing the word of God is not enough as to understanding it.
Knowing the word of God is extremely useful to Christians both in their lives and in evangelism. But understanding the the Word of God is absolutely essential for any Bible teacher.
The Word of God is made up of 66 books, some are history, prophecy, some are poetry and some are letters.
Even within a book, there are different types of literature, for example the book of Isaiah contains, prophecy much of which is in poetry form and also contains narrative history.
Different types of literature have to be handled differently. The way we treat prophecy we can't handle poetry like that's.
I will continue from here next time.
Don't forget to follow for more sound teachings.
