LET'S TALK ABOUT HERMENEUTICS
TEACHING THE WORD OF GOD
The greatest task a person can do is teaching the word of God.

To teach the word of God is a cumbersome assignment one can be engaged in. So, teaching is a great job and a God-given gift as well.

A teacher cannot teach pupils more than he knows, likewise a leader cannot lead others further and farther than he himself has gone.

So, before we can effectively teach the word of God, we have to *Know* the word of God and have to *understand* the word of God.

If you can memorize some verses, it is good but not encouraging because you might run dry of them when needed.

But when you read to understand with the help of Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit in you will help to store the verses and whenever it is needed, it will be prompted by the Holy Spirit, this is known as the quickening of the Holy Spirit.

The Jewish boys learn Torah that way and Muslim boy learn Quran that way - i. e. by memorization, but the Holy Bible is a different book that was brought to us by inspiration and breath of God, so it is the same Holy Spirit that inspired the writers that is also in the Christ's followers that will do the storing and prompting/quickening when needed - Psalm 119:11 knowing fully well that the word of God is a powerful tool to fight against temptation and sin as we noticed the effectiveness in Jesus Christ during His temptations.

Teaching the word of God has been God's intentions and idea from inception.

When God revealed Himself to anyone, He charged them to teach their children who will teach their unborn generations.

Teaching the word of God is dated back to the time of Adam when God told Adam what to eat and what not to eat in the Garden of Eden.

Adam in turn instructed his wife Eve of the instructions of the Lord.

Likewise Noah who taught his children the way of the Lord and they walked therein which made them qualified to entered the ark with Noah.

Abraham did the same thing, and so many others.

WHY TEACHING THE WORD OF GOD?
1. It is a means of safe guarding the and keeping the commandments of God - Deut. 11:19
2. It teaches the coming generation the fear and the law of the Lord.
3. It brings enlightenment and empower the people.
4. It makes us to know our rights when enemies shall come to rob us.
5. It makes people to understand God more... etc

HOW CAN WE TEACH THE WORD EFFECTIVELY?
A. KNOWING THE WORD OF GOD
A teacher teaches what he knows. You can't give what you don't have.

To teach the word of God is very easy, everyone can teach for teaching sake, but that's not what I am saying here.

Teaching the word of God effectively, this means, we teach the word of God and have result, we should teach the word with aim of having positive reaction to the word being taught.

The only way to know the word of God is to read it again and again and again? We should read it like a book - not just a few verses at a time. We should endeavor to read the entire book in order to get the true meaning of what is said and meant.

Just read as many books of the Bible you can read, either short books like 1st - 3rd John, Jude, Esther, Nehemiah, etc, just read to understand and make sure you enjoy what you are reading.

If you're a Bible teacher, I challenge you to read through the entire Bible and make sure you enjoy what you're reading.

UNDERSTANDING THE WORD
This is another level in the word of God. It is one thing to teach the word, it is another thing to have understanding in what you're teaching.

Many ministers today does not possess understanding in the word, so they teaches erroneously, they mishandled the word of Grace. They misappropriates the word of God.

For you to be an effective teacher of the Word of God, you must strive to possess deeper understanding in the word of God according to Paul's advice to Timothy that he must seek to learn with diligence to become a teacher who will teach the word of God without prejudice, who will not be put to shame when confronted with questions from the people he would be teaching.

As we know nowadays that most of our congregations, upon hearing your topic, they will ask Google, AI, Chat GTP etc, they would get the answers and they will come to Bible class to test their teachers/pastors, not that they want to know, but they want to put you to shame.

We have found ourselves pastoring AI generated congregations, so the pastor must be well grounded in the Scriptures or else he/she will be swayed away in his ignorance.

Let me share this experience with you.

I was confronted by a brethren in the church and asked me a simple question.

It was so simple that if one is not careful, one will be ashamed.

He asked, "what is covenant?"

Now let me throw the question to you back.

Can you attempt to answer this.
WHAT IS COVENANT?

It look simple and a very familiar word that most of the Christians, pastors and teachers of the word simply presumed they know it because of its everyday usage and it is a common word in the scripture and frequently used among people.

There is great difference between covenant, agreement, vow, promise

Where do we meet the word covenant for the first time in the Bible?

Dictionary interprets covenant as an agreement between to parties, etc. That is biblically wrong.

Now, going by dictionary meaning, where was God and Noah agreeing to the covenant God spoke?

Where was Noah's agreeing to that?

In agreement, there must be response from both part before it is sealed and confirmed to be an agreement, but in covenant, nothing like that takes place.

When God establishes covenant, there was no response from the other party, God just speaks what He wanted to do, He revealed it to man and that is final - Jer. 29:11

God never seek for the opinion of the other party as in agreement.

In drafting agreement or memorandum of understanding (MOU), the both parties must give their consents, but in covenant, no consent is needed.

It is an establishment of a superior plan and purposes spoken out or made know to the parties involved so as to be guided by it.

Can you see now that dictionary is wrong in its definition.

God never seek for approval from anyone while establishing His covenant with man.

Likewise the devil, Satan never seek for approval or consent from our forefathers before establishing his demonic covenant with them and their unborn generations.

God never asked Noah if he agree that He God will not destroy the world with water again and we never read Noah responding at all.

We never read where God seek for Abraham's consent if he would agree to be the father of many nations and if he would agree to the fact that he would be bless and anyone who curse him would be cursed.

God never asked for his perception or idea or intent or consent.

God just came and spoke out His mind, plans and purposes for Abraham so that Abraham would walk within the confine of that covenant.

Did you get that?

So, how do I know this?
It was a Divine revelation I caught during studying His Word.

That is what the diligent studies conducted under the influence and guidance of the Holy Spirit does.

Don't forget that I told you in the past that, the Scriptures you are attempting to study was inspired by the Breath of God, the Spirit of God, that same Breath, the Spirit of God is with us that are attempting to study and interprete the scriptures to tell us what He (the Spirit of God) meant in a particular verse, because He was the one that inspired, guided, and instructed the writers to write.

Seeking to understand the Word of God should be the paramount search of Christians, so that we will be able to preach and teach the word of God with all boldness and assurance that we are telling people the truth and the true meaning of the word.

Teaching the word of God effectively depend on knowing it first, also knowing the word of God is not enough as to understanding it.

Knowing the word of God is extremely useful to Christians both in their lives and in evangelism. But understanding the the Word of God is absolutely essential for any Bible teacher.

The Word of God is made up of 66 books, some are history, prophecy, some are poetry and some are letters.

Even within a book, there are different types of literature, for example the book of Isaiah contains, prophecy much of which is in poetry form and also contains narrative history.

Different types of literature have to be handled differently. The way we treat prophecy we can't handle poetry like that's.

I will continue from here next time.
Don't forget to follow for more sound teachings.

ALWAYS INTERPRET A PASSAGE IN HARMONY WITH THE CONTEXT.
I have said it that, no passage should be interpreted out of context.

Context is the environment that permits the text or passage to survive, so, attempting to interprete the passage out of context is just like trying to explain or analyze fish without referring to water.

Context is the entire section of written thought in which the passage is found.

It is the environment that permeates, allows, and surrounds the passage.

The context is pre-text and co-text altogether.
Pre-text + Co-text = CONTEXT

Context may include the immediately precedes and follows and all parts properly connected to the passage/text.

The writing of scripture demonstrate a continuous, logical flow of thoughts and a passage should never be forcibly pulled out of this order into a mold of some other thoughts. If you do, then it is said that you interpret a passage out of context or quote out of context.

A knowledge of the context will greatly assist in the exegesis of any doubtful passage.

Finally, don't over spiritualise any passage.

BEYOND THE PULPIT
Many Pastors, Prophets, Apostles, Evangelists, Teachers that are mounting the pulpit thought their callings and ministries are all about pulpit alone.

Many ministers thought once they are able to mount the pulpit and preach the gospel, they're ok.

But little do the know that, ministry goes beyond the pulpit.

Teaching, prophesying, preaching effectively goes beyond the pulpit.

To be effective in the ministry goes beyond pulpit.

Life of a ministry extended beyond the pulpit. Likewise the life of a minister also, is beyond the pulpit.

To discover these essentials to effective ministry, plan to attend this year's One Day Ministers Interactive Conference 2025 physically coming up in October.

FREE REGISTRATION, BOOKS, SNACKS AND CONFERENCE MATERIALS.

Simply send REG MIS 2025 to 08034082222 WhatsApp now to secure your and for us to be able to plan for your materials. The registration is for those who will attend physically, if you won't come, don't bother to register at all.

RESURRECTION OR RESUSCITATION
Matthew 28:2

INTRODUCTION
When someone is sick and unconscious for a number of days, such that he/she cannot breath, wink his eyes, lift up his legs and hands or talk, for the length of time this is happening in the hospital or at home, the doctor will say that such a person is in a coma. One can go into a coma if the health of such a person is questionable, yet that person will not be dead. Why? Because there will be pulse in that person which an ordinary touch of the hand or the stethoscope cannot detect, but some special medical equipments, such as electric shock can be used on such a patient to revive him/her back to life. If such a person has not been confirmed clinically dead, reviving or bringing him or her back to life is known as RESUSCITATION.

WHAT IS RESUSCITATION?
According to Dictionary.com, it says that resuscitation is to revive, especially from apparent death or from unconsciousness. Simply put, it means to cause to regain consciousness, an act of reviving a person and returning them to consciousness.

According to Advance Learner’s Dictionary, it means; “to make somebody start breathing again or become conscious again after they have almost died”.

The Droid Dictionary puts it thus; “The act of reviving a person and returning them to consciousness”. Collins Dictionary says the same thing.

Resuscitation is only possible when there is hope of life for such a person, when he/she has not been confirmed clinically dead. We want to examine the case of Lazarus’ and Jesus’ deaths and resurrections. While some were saying that Jesus’ body was stolen, some others said that He was not the one crucified because he was too powerful and too dear to God to have been allowed to be wickedly killed. All these claims do not hold any water.

LAZARUS DEATH.
Let us examine Lazarus’ death and coming back to life. Is it resurrection or resuscitation? According to the Gospel of St John 11:14–44. Lazarus was a close friend of Jesus. Whenever Jesus was having ministration in and around the region of Bethany, He would come into the house of Lazarus, a room would be prepared for Jesus to rest and pass the night; according to the customs of the Jews as seen in the case of Elisha and the shunammite woman (II Kgs 4:8-11).

So there was every possibility that Jesus used to passed the night in the house of Lazarus and this would have been responsible for the familiarity with Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha to the extent that when Jesus was in their house one day Mary poured a costly and highly concentrated perfumed ointment on Jesus head (John 12:1-3; Chapter 11:1-2). On another day, when Jesus was in their house, Mary, Martha and Lazarus were enjoying a discussion about issues concerning the kingdom of God, when suddenly Martha suddenly got up and went into the Kitchen to prepare the food they would eat.

She started grumbling and complaining that Mary left her alone in the Kitchen without helping (Luke 10:38-42). In verse 41 you will notice the familiarity in the tone of Jesus when He called Martha twice and rebuked her for her character; Jesus was telling us that this had become her habitual character. These points to us that Jesus had been watching her over a period of time. This was the kind of close relationship that existed between Jesus and Lazarus.

When Lazarus suddenly fell sick, he sent his sisters to his friend, Jesus, and they came to Jesus as a matter of urgency, but the way Jesus handled the matter was surprising. He simply replied, “This sickness is not unto death….” (John 11:4). How could Jesus have reacted like that towards the urgent message about life threatening sickness when He (Jesus) knew that Lazarus would die?

Meanwhile, when Mary and Martha came to Jesus (verse 3) they said, “Lord behold he whom you love is sick”. This shows how intimate they were to Jesus, yet, Jesus waited for two more days to finish up what he was doing and from there he went to Judea, by the time Jesus arrived in the house, Lazarus had died and been buried four days earlier (verse 17).

Lazarus had been confirmed dead and had been buried for four day. He was committed to mother earth and sealed, slab was put on his grave. He was confirmed dead both by his sisters and by our Lord Jesus Christ (verse 14-15).

Let us compare Lazarus of the New Testament with our own time seasoned radio presenter and outstanding genius comedian, Gbenga Adeboye. The two of them died for a period of time. There was a time it was rumored that Gbenga Adeboye died and woke up.

Resuscitation occurred when Gbenga Adeboye’s first rumored death occurred. At the second rumored death, he was confirmed clinically dead. But that was not the case with Lazarus, he was confirmed to have been dead clinically and was buried inside the tomb and remained in the tomb for four good days; meanwhile, Gbenga Adeboye’s body was not committed to mother earth when he was first rumored to have died because he was not pronounced clinically dead.

Scientifically, the composition of the human body cannot withstand intensive heat for two day or more without getting boiled and on the third day, it will swell up and begin to decompose and soon burst. Even if embalmed, the human body should not be put where there is intensive heat to prevent decomposition.

Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s remains was embalmed and was placed in an air conditioned room. No wonder in the land of Israel and in Egypt, they used bandages to wrap their dead and tie them tight, as is also done during a Muslim burial, so that the dead body will not swell up and burst. In other words, they prepare their dead for a journey into eternity.

In John 11:44, Lazarus was securely wrapped from head to toes. A way of preserving the flesh from decomposition and falling off the bone, which acts as body frame.

Lazarus typified the resurrection of the dead. Lazarus couldn’t have fainted or gone into a coma for four days in the heart of the earth, in a stinking tomb. Before flesh begins to stink, it will first get rotten.

Imagine what happened when Jesus offered to divinely bring Lazarus back to life, his sisters prompt reaction was recorded in vs 39. Jesus commanded that the stone (Slab) be rolled away, but Martha argued with Jesus, querying what He (Jesus) wanted to do. She said categorically to Jesus that he should not bother trying to resurrect him, because after four days, he would be stinking, and the health of everyone around would be endangered with the odour that would plague the entire community.

Let me quickly tell you a truth here. If anything good will happen to you, are you aware that, those who are close to you, those who seem to care about your situation could form a resistance to it.

Mary and Martha were crying and were grieving because of the death of their brother, but when their brother was to be delivered from the grip of death, should they have resisted it? But they did (vs 39).

Such is life. Those that are sympathizing with you, those who mourn with you, those who feel concern about you now, those who pray that your situation change for better, that Pastor or Prophet that always have you around in the church, might be the one to resist your change of situation when it arrives.

I pray for you today, every good thing that is dead in your life will receive resurrection power today in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Whether your families like it or not. Whether your friends or neighbours like it or not, your change will occur positively in the name of Jesus.

WHAT IS RESURRECTION?
According to Oxford Dictionary, resurrection is the time when Jesus Christ returned to life again after His death. A new beginning for something. To resurrect means to bring a dead person back to life.

Dictionary.com puts it thus: the rising of Christ Jesus after his death and burial. The resurrection of Lazarus was quite different from the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the case of Jesus, He was crucified openly; His blood was dripping until no blood was left in Him. The Bible says that life is in the blood. The life of any flesh is the blood, (Lev. 17:11).

The blood of Jesus was poured out to the last drop as a libation on the earth (soil). Since there was no blood left in Jesus, there was no life left in Him. He died. To further confirm that He had died, one of the soldiers took a spear and pierced into His bosom through His ribs (John 19:34).

In how many ways did the blood come out from Jesus before he was confirmed dead? The blood of Jesus was drained through a crown made of thorns, the piercing of His palms and feet with nails, thrusting of a spear through His ribs and the lashes of horse whips with blade strung on them, all these wounds drained the blood of Jesus.

CONFIRMATION OF JESUS’ DEATH
Jesus was confirmed clinically dead not by his disciples, but
1. By the soldiers
2. Pontius Pilate who crucified Him (Mark 15:44-45),
3. The centurion that was in charge of the crucifixion of Jesus. This centurion waited and carried out a test on Jesus to be sure that He actually died (Mark 15:39).
4. Also, Joseph of Arimathea that received the body of Jesus with permission from Pilate to lay him in his own private tomb.

Many wealthy Jews had their graves (tombs) prepared ahead of their death and dressed to their taste; even in Nigeria, we know some rich men that dug their tomb and finished it to their taste while they were still alive and active, Joseph of Arimathea, one of the secret disciples of Jesus Christ was one of such people. Nicodemus was also a secret disciple.

Joseph of Arimathea was a wealthy person to have been able to dug out his own tomb from a rock. He carved the rock. It was in this tomb my Lord Jesus Christ was laid after Joseph had wrapped Jesus according to their custom with fine line.

He wrapped Jesus with fine linen, a costly material that could only be afforded by wealthy people.

5. Jesus died and was confirmed dead and was buried in the tomb and remained in the tomb for three days and at the expiration of the three days, he resurrected. Hallelujah!

MYTH OR REALITY, DID JESUS ACTUALLY DIE?
Different religious groups have been debating it, many sects are arguing it, some are disclaiming it while many stylishly refute the death of Jesus Christ, some even openly rejected it, while some are still carrying out research on the fact.

Some religious bodies who claimed to believed in Jesus, but they believed that he was one of the normal prophets with special grace, while some said that Jesus was just one of the great masters, yet others are of the opinion that Jesus was never the son of God and couldn’t have been son of God.

Some claimed that Jesus was too powerful to be arrested and be killed cheaply like that; they further stressed their point that it was another person that was crucified on the cross since Jesus was so powerful to the extent that at times he used to wear his disciples’ face and they all resembled each other, and that Judas could have kissed a wrong person. That wrong person could have been one of the disciples and that was whom they crucified.

I want to tell you point blank that all these claims were purported to attack the essence of the Christian faith. Our faith is hinged on the virgin birth, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. The essence of Christianity is the resurrected Jesus. Never agree with any folk who wants to destroy the pillar of your faith, they are all anti-Christ, watch out for them.
