THE FEAR OF THE LORD
The fear of the Lord is more than being afraid of God; it is recognizing who He is and allowing that knowledge to govern how we live. Romans 3:11–18 reveals the condition of humanity when God is not at the center: there is no understanding, no desire for God, and ultimately, “there is no fear of God before their eyes.”
Psalm 111:10 declares, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” True wisdom begins when we recognize God as the highest authority and submit our lives to Him. The more we know God, the more we understand why His Word must govern our choices.
Deuteronomy 10:12–13 brings it into practice: fear the Lord, walk in His ways, love Him, serve Him with all your heart, and keep His commandments. The fear of God therefore brings our lives under His authority. It keeps us from making ourselves the final standard of what is right and wrong.
When the fear of God disappears, man begins to live according to his own desires and chooses what is convenient rather than what is pleasing to God. But where the fear of the Lord is present, there is wisdom, obedience, reverence, and a willingness to depart from what contradicts His Word.
To fear God is to know Him, honor Him, obey Him, and allow His Word—not our desires—to govern our lives.
