Saint of the day (4 June 2024)
Saint Francis Caracciolo (1563-1608) was an Italian Roman Catholic priest and the co-founder of the Congregation of the Minor Clerks Regular. Born Ascanio Caracciolo in Villa Santa Maria, Abruzzo, he came from a noble family. His early life was marked by a severe illness, which he promised God he would devote his life to Him if he recovered. Miraculously, he did recover, and this event became a turning point, steering him toward the priesthood.
Caracciolo studied theology in Naples and was ordained a priest in 1587. While in Naples, he met John Augustine Adorno, with whom he shared a vision of a new religious congregation dedicated to the care of the sick and the promotion of Eucharistic adoration. Together, they founded the Congregation of the Minor Clerks Regular, also known as the Caracciolini, in 1588. The congregation emphasized personal holiness, community life, and pastoral care, combining elements of both monastic and active religious life.
Caracciolo was known for his deep piety, humility, and dedication to the Eucharist. He spent long hours in prayer and often fasted rigorously. His commitment to the spiritual and physical well-being of others was evident in his work among the sick and poor.
Francis Caracciolo died in 1608 in Agnone, Italy. His reputation for holiness led to his canonization by Pope Pius VII in 1807. His feast day is celebrated on June 4. Saint Francis Caracciolo is remembered as a model of Eucharistic devotion and pastoral care, embodying the ideals of his congregation through his life and work.
May St. Francis Caracciolo continue to intercede for us. Amen
