Matthew 20:1-15
[1]FOR THE kingdom of heaven is like the owner of an estate who went out in the morning along with the dawn to hire workmen for his vineyard.
[2]After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
[3]And going out about the third hour (nine o'clock), he saw others standing idle in the marketplace;
[4]And he said to them, You go also into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will pay you. And they went.
[5]He went out again about the sixth hour (noon), and the ninth hour (three o'clock) he did the same.
[6]And about the eleventh hour (five o'clock) he went out and found still others standing around, and said to them, Why do you stand here idle all day?
[7]They answered him, Because nobody has hired us. He told them, You go out into the vineyard also and you will get whatever is just and fair.
[8]When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, Call the workmen and pay them their wages, beginning with the last and ending with the first. [Lev. 19:13; Deut. 24:15.]
[9]And those who had been hired at the eleventh hour (five o'clock) came and received a denarius each.
[10]Now when the first came, they supposed they would get more, but each of them also received a denarius.
[11]And when they received it, they grumbled at the owner of the estate,
[12]Saying, These [men] who came last worked no more than an hour, and yet you have made them rank with us who have borne the burden and the scorching heat of the day.
[13]But he answered one of them, Friend, I am doing you no injustice. Did you not agree with me for a denarius?
[14]Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this man hired last the same as I give to you.
[15]Am I not permitted to do what I choose with what is mine? [Or do you begrudge my being generous?] Is your eye evil because I am good?

THE SPIRIT OF THE ANTI-CHRIST AND THE CHALLENGE OF CHRISTIAN UNITY: A REFLECTION ON THE OLD CATHOLICS AND ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCHES COEXISTING IN NIGERIA

MOST REV. DR JOHN A. ADEYEMO, DD - PRESIDING ARCHBISHOP, ORCC-LR, SUI IURIS & PRESIDENT, INDEPENDENT CATHOLIC BISHOPS' CONFERENCE

Nigeria’s rich Christian landscape hosts a variety of denominations, among which the Old Catholic Churches and the Roman Catholic Church notably coexist. Despite sharing roots in the historic Catholic tradition, these two bodies face tensions and hostilities, primarily from the Roman Catholic side, related to issues of authority, doctrine, and influence. The Old Catholic Apostolic Church in Nigeria emerged officially around 2014 under Bishop Raphael Fagbohun, as a movement devoted to upholding what it sees as the original Catholic teachings apart from the dogmatic innovations of the Roman Catholic hierarchy. Yet the two Churches live side by side in Nigeria, navigating complex relations marked by both cooperation and conflict.

# # # Division in the Body of Christ: A Biblical and Spiritual Concern

This tension reflects a deeper spiritual challenge that transcends organisational disputes. The New Testament calls for the Church as one Body, unified despite diverse members and functions. Paul’s metaphor in 1 Corinthians 12 clearly affirms the mutual dependence of all parts of the Body: “The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I don’t need you!’” (1 Corinthians 12:21). Fighting among parts of the Body is self-defeating and contrary to the mission of Christ.

Jesus also warned against divisiveness, stating, “For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, for whoever is not against us is for us” (Mark 9:39-40). Such division among believers, especially when rooted in denominational pride or fear of losing influence, reflects the spirit of the anti-Christ. This spirit opposes the unity Jesus prayed for: “that they may all be one... so that the world may beli

The Spirit of the Anti-Christ in Churches

“Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, for whoever is not against us is for us.” (Mark 9:39–40)

Today it’s not so.
Let me sound this again: Christ is not coming for a disjointed body but for a united body.

And let me say this in clear language, without any bias: you are operating in the spirit of the anti-Christ if, as part of the Body—the Church—you fight against another part of the Body—the Church.

You cannot claim to be a Christian and yet fight Christians simply because they do not bear your denominational name, or because you think their presence threatens your influence. Some even fear that a new denomination in town will “run them out of business.” But hear me clearly: you are anti-Christ if you think the Church is a business venture.

So, if it is not business driving your opposition against other believers, what then is your reason? Can the leg fight the hand, forgetting it is the hand that gives food to the mouth, and without the mouth eating, the body starves—and the leg suffers too? “The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I don’t need you!’ And the head cannot say to the feet, ‘I don’t need you!’” (1 Corinthians 12:21).

You are called as a shepherd to lead Christ’s flock under your care into His sheepfold, not to wage war against other parts of Christ’s body. Remember what Jesus said: “I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd” (John 10:16).

Can a created thing fight its Maker? Of course not. Yet today, created people are fighting the Creator by fighting His Body, the Church.

Let me reiterate: there are no denominations in heaven. But there is a Church in heaven—Christ’s One Body. You cannot truly be a member of that Body and still fight another part of it. If you do, you are not serving Christ but standing against Him
