UNTOLD DISTRESS AND WISDOM OF A FATHER
FATHER'S DAY REFLECTION
"And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son." — Genesis 21:11
As I reflected on the story of Abraham, Sarah, Hagar, and Ishmael, my attention was drawn to something many people overlook: the distress of a father.
Sarah had her concerns. She wanted Hagar and Ishmael sent away. But Abraham was grieved because of his son. Before God gave Abraham direction, He first gave him assurance. God saw the burden Abraham carried in silence.
Many fathers live in that same place today.
A father often carries concerns he cannot easily share. He worries about the future, the destiny of his children, the consequences of his decisions, and the well-being of those entrusted to him. While others see his strength, few see his distress.
One lesson I have learned is that a father's responsibility often stretches beyond what is visible. A man is called to think beyond the moment, beyond himself, and sometimes beyond his own comfort. This does not make women less valuable; it simply highlights a unique burden that many fathers carry.
Today, I salute fathers who continue to stand under pressure. Fathers who make difficult decisions. Fathers who carry silent concerns. Fathers who endure mental and emotional strain while remaining committed to their families.
May God, who comforted Abraham, strengthen every father carrying a burden in silence.
